Call EA optimistic about the future of mobile gaming. Their CFO Blake Jorgensen says that “What gets us the most excited is the power, the computing power, of mobile devices and the speed at which that’s growing," he said. “What that might mean is that a tablet, three or four years from now, has more power than what a typical console has. And that will open up a whole new set of people to console-style games that are much more immersive, much deeper, much more character-driven than simply a static mobile game that you might play for a small burst of time while you’re waiting for the bus." He made these comments at the recent Technology, Internet, and Media Conference.
I imagine some folks in the comments below are going to deride EA for making games that fit the description of “static mobile game that you might play for a small burst of time" but they’ve shown signs of being bullish on mobile gaming. Remember the talk about the Frostbite engine running on iOS? And for all the apparent cynicism in EA’s mobile games that they’re criticized for, you can’t fault the production values in something like SimCity BuildIt (Free), and FIFA 15: Ultimate Team (Free) is an incredibly deep game. Will EA’s vision of bigger and deeper mobile experiences come true? Perhaps they’ll have to help build them.
