FDG Entertainment is doing something quite unique with their beautiful action RPG Oceanhorn [$7.99]. They're releasing a free trial version, which gives you a chance to check out the first chapter of the game, as well as test how well it performs on your device. Now, lite versions of games are nothing new, and indeed you could always just simply download a lite version of a game to see how it performed on your iOS device. What's interesting about Oceanhorn Benchmark Edition is that it actually comes with a testing mode built-in that will grade the performance of the game on your particular device.

Simply having a lite version of Oceanhorn for people to check out and decide if they want the full version is a great idea, but it's an interesting twist throwing a basic benchmarking mode in there too. Oceanhorn is a very visually impressive game, but miraculously it supports devices all the way back to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Now you can see for yourself just how well it runs on those older devices with the Benchmark Edition. The game is available now in international markets, and should land in the US App Store around 11pm EST later tonight. Be sure to check it out, as well as the impressions in our forums and our full review of Oceanhorn.

Can't wait to try it. I have an iPad Air so I'm guessing it will work fine but GTA San Andreas doesn't work well on the 64-bit iDevices so who knows?

Plays like a dream on my iPad Air also plays very well on my iPad 3

GTASA plays fine on my iPad Air and 5S. Steady, smooth framerate, no freeze ups, and maybe one crash in the 6 months I've had it.

    +1 for FDG Entertainment

This should be standard with all 3d intensive games

Wow!!! So much better to do this than to go freemium! I miss the simple days of gaming. I am not interested in the game but will download just to support the model!

If you haven't played this yet stop messing around!!! Lol!! It was so good.

Now that there is a free trial..I will definitely jump on board!

        Do that!!!

It seems that many companies have moved away from the lite version to a free version with content to unlock via IAP or just a flat out Freemium model. It is nice to see the inclusion of a lite version. I think the idea of being able to benchmark how a game works on your device great.

Too many times players have downloaded games only to learn that it does not work properly on their devices. I often see comment where people suggest to others that is is time to upgrade their devices. This is not always a financial possibility for many people. Being able to test and benchmark a game opens it to many people who would otherwise forgo it due to past experiences. If other developers would incorporate such a process, it would give access and open up many games to a larger audience.

I've been waiting for this game to be on sale since very first day it was released, I've got it on my wish list probably the longest, but still nothing, not a single day of discount. Instead of useless benchmark edition they should decrease the price at least a little bit for a day or two. I don't need benchmark to know it'll run smoothly on my iPad mini with retina, it should be even optimized for 64bit architecture on A7 cpu and run 60 fps. All I need is just one day on sale. I'm not willing to pay 8,99€ after waiting so long. Unfortunately, this is just over my price range even though I'm purchasing apps on daily basis:(

Life is Short. Pay the 8,99 and be happy Now. There is no more bitter taste in life than Regret.

It's worth the money so just buy it, even if it means you go a few days without buying other things.

Should be fine on any 2012-2014 device. Surprised it took them this long to do a 'Lite' version. Oceanhorn was ages ago.

This seems to have disappeared from the App Store… anyone know what’s up?

    • MacPlash

it was limited offer as far as I remember
