A couple of weeks ago, Atari created quite a buzz by mentioning the beloved and long-dormant franchise RollerCoaster Tycoon on their Twitter account. Nobody really knew what to make of it, but things just got more confusing from there as a few days later they tweeted another mention of the game along with the hashtag #RCT4M where many people speculated that the "M" stood for mobile. Well, they were right, as this week Atari has officially announced RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices. Here's a brief trailer.

RollerCoaster Tycoon on mobile will launch for $2.99 and will feature 20 pre-designed coasters and a host of new attractions to build out your theme park. You'll be able to share your park with others as well as visit your friends' parks and exchange coaster blueprints. RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile is set for an "early spring" release, so we'll give you a heads up when a definite release date is announced.

But what's the chance they haven't turned it into some free-to-play garbage? (Even though it isn't actually free-to-play...)

    • http://www.nerdinfo.com/ Joe Nerd

Probably not very high but the fact that it is 2.99 leaves me somewhat hopeful!

  • King

I'd buy that for a dollar

  • mantascorp

I just want to build rides, hire staff, publicize my park, and do the normal RCT things without annoying timers and being forced to go look at other people's parks.

Please, please, please let this be a break from the Theme Park-type EA model for this kind of game. If I have to pay $3 for the game (and I will be glad to do so), don't hold me hostage using free-to-play traps and crap.

  • RickyBrooke

Been waiting for this announcement for months!

Please let this release be a fantastic new version of our beloved sim classic!!!

If it's a fully paid for app it gives me hope that this will be a worthy sequel to RCT1, 2 & 3...

  • scottS

PocketTactics says that it's $3, to enjoy the added goodness of additional in-app purchases. And addtiional features for inviting your facebook friends.

So yeah, best of both worlds! (Freemium AND purchased!)

  • ste86uk

I just hope as others can view your park that it doesn't require Internet constantly and that's just optional.

  • chanandler

Really hoping this isn't going to be like that F2P rubbish theme park!

  • tommet

Well at least it's not EA.

  • iValerio1990

oh yea ! take that EA

  • dwx882

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am for this!!! I was hopeful when Theme Park came out, only to find it was an online-only cash trap!! I hope it's like the PC versions. Despite the fact that the graphics look like RCT2 I'm excited at the possibility of having an ACTUAL Roller Coaster Tycoon game. Hopefully they won't kill it with IAP like EA does with nearly every one of their games.

if ea keeps ruining video games, why are they making so much money?

    • JustMeNow

Because they have some good games. When they do well, they NAIL it, but these days, their mobile games don't really come from the heart.

I'd rather play this on the computer and enjoy this years from now going back to it once in a while. The first and 2nd were that good. Instead I'm worried that this will be a pay to unlock more features game and fail miserably only to be forgotten months later.

  • zergslayer69

I want to remain positive, but I can't help but EXPECT that there will be microtransactions AGAIN.

  • CooleTeeps

I've loved Rollercoaster Tycoon and wanted to play it soooooooooo bad ever since I saw PeanutButterGamer play it! Now I finally can! And just for $2.99? Awesome! Hopefully it doesn't rely in IAPs.

    • thiagovscoelho

It's twice that much on GOG, with no DRM, a better HD interface and most importantly none of the free-to-pay garbage that seems implied by all the parts of this video that show actual footage.

      • http://www.appfreakblog.com appfreak

Not on the Mac though. I have two copies of the original for PC on a CD

      • thiagovscoelho

okay with it not being for the Mac and appearing as crap on the iPad I think it's safe to decide that RollerCoaster Tycoon just can't appear on Apple platforms

  • thiagovscoelho

Two currencies. Facebook. That one coin thing on top of a building, stating you have to click to collect your money (RCT fans know how much trouble this would cause).

This is going to be garbage. Seriously, either make a free-to-pay piece of shit OR charge premium for it, you can't have both. (See also: AT Card Wars)

  • anabolicMike

I would pay 9.99 easily for this game if they left all the free to play bullshit out of it. Seriously, I know they gotta make their money and if happily pay premium for this baby. Course, I know im in the minority with that. I don't know why some people think paying 99 cents a day every day for a year is better then a 10 buck charge up front. If you know what I mean

  • Papa Deuce

I am with you, Mike.... But I was thinking $8.... But I could live with $10.

  • Snowyday2

Cool I can't wait to get this game

  • Andres Alfonso

Cool I can't wait to play this game on my IPad Air

  • timborama

Nice! I'll gladly pay $3 (assuming no further IAP).

  • http://www.appfreakblog.com appfreak

I want to love this game but wouldn't be too hopeful. One of the screenshots they released shows a shop to pay for roller coaster parts using game coins and Bux type ticket

Look at second 5 in the trailer. There's gold, tickets, experience and satisfaction bars! I wonder what the xp and tickets are for. There's also a plus sign next to the tickets and gold, which mean that you can buy them by IAP. I just hope a $3 dollar game won't have necessary IAPs.
