Squeenix is an odd company to watch, as following the release of nearly every other Final Fantasy game imaginable they're just now getting around to arguably the most anticipated Final Fantasy of all. How do they promote it, before its launch? With screenshots that show almost nothing and this odd trailer featuring gameplay video that's basically on par with playing the original SNES version of the game in picture in picture while your parents watched Wheel of Fortune:

I don't get it, but I've given up on trying to understand these things as it'd seem the success of Square on the App Store couldn't be any more on autopilot than it already is. Regardless, Final Fantasy VI is still scheduled for "Winter."

  • paulf58

I'm intrigued at how they will handle Sabin's blitz techniques. Will they just be selectable ala spells now?

    • Jensen_G

I hope not; the blitzes were overpowered because you would inevitably fail at the combo some percentage of the time. I'm sure there must still be a skill move involved.

      • paulf58

Not really. Who fails at simple commands?

    • Fatty Bolger

Maybe they'll have an on-screen QTE?

    • ineptidude

Perhaps a connect the dots deal?

    • pdSlooper

I imagine something like the "draw a magic symbol on the screen" stuff you got in early DS games like Castlevania: Something-or-other of Sorrow and Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal. I think Lost Magic had that, too. Something time- and dexterity-based, like the original inputs, maybe, if less obviously fighting game inspired.

  • pajman sarafzadeh

    Squarre is awesome.
    thank you

    • 21tigermike

      "FOR SMARTPHONE" ...lol

Well, correction. Squaresoft was one of the coolest companies imaginable. SE, seems a little too 'out of touch' for my liking.

New years resolution for SquareEnix: Meet a Gaijin. Seriously. Just one.

Do they know we've had iPhones for about 6 years now?

      • pajman sarafzadeh

There is a huge demand among Gaijin's for these remakes. JRPG are big in the gaming industry. All the developers who are making games like Battlefield, COD, GTA, AC etc, they all grew up playing these Square titles.

Square Enix is a business, but its an awesome business. I love the company and what they produce, like the new Tomb Raider, Deus Ex HR etc, etc and i am equally sure great things are coming.

Definitely not out of touch, they have been incredibly profitable bringing these classic's back while supporting new game development as well.

Compare what Square is offering vs EA or Gameloft. Talk about crap, there like beggars at the troff with there IAP games. Square charges a premium and gives a premium product.

        Square is awesome.

      • pajman sarafzadeh

Of course they can do better, but they have still done pretty damn good. hell of a lot better than Gameloft, Ubisoft, Atari, Activision and many other AAA companies.

Give credit where credit is do.

      • DorianK

Expect they haven't anything that interesting on iOS. Most of it just rehashing old IP. I believe Chaos Rings is the only major succesfully game on mobile that is something new.

      • pajman sarafzadeh

you mean besides Darkridder, Bloodmasque, Deus Ex, The all new Final Fantasy`s, the all new Tomb Raider stick shooter and the three Chaos Rings, about 10 titles or so, no they have not done much, (lol)

  • JailDesigner

I can't see anything!!! This video is ridiculous

    • Kugiro

      Agreed.

  • Ivan

Is it me, or is this trailer awful? I feel like a 60 second video showing the FF6 logo and a picture of an iPhone 5S next to a Nexus 5 would have been better.

    • Boony Tuesday

It's a teaser trailer. They typically don't show much.

  • curtisrshideler

Yup. That trailer isn't going to win any awards. Hopefully they'll stop releasing anything else besides the actual game!

  • tunaW

I thought the trailer was good. The title screen was presented in the same way as the SNES version. After so many years since i last played the game, that was a nice flashback to one of the scenes that everyone who's played the game would be familiar with. The graphics haven't been modified all that much so I didn't think it was important that the gameplay segments were not fullscreen. It did however evoke feelings of how epic the game was and for that I think the trailer was a success.

  • Psac42

Wouldn't FF7 be the most anticipated of all? I haven't finished it myself, but don't some people consider that one of the best RPGs of all time?

    • C. Stubb

Yeah, I think so too...although perhaps wishing for FF7 right now would be kind of unrealistic. I'm just guessing, but mobile technology might require some catching-up to do before that happens, with as much "remastering" as SE tends to do with their iOS releases.

And yes, I realize that a 5S would probably have little trouble in the processing power department, but developers tend to wait totals full advantage of new technology until a majority of the population is using it. (I mean, how many games do you see with compatibility requirements set to -only- the latest device?)

So what I'm really trying to say is that, while FF7 on mobile would definitely be waaaay more amazing than FF6, I believe that, for the moment, FF6 is the best we can hope for.

      • Onikage725

Square Enix is all "it isn't yet feasible to port FF VII." Meanwhile, other companies have dropped KotOR, San Andreas, X-Com EU...

      • visualplayer

How many DVDs/CDs did those games take up originally? Curious.

      • Onikage725

3 CDs, if memory serves. The file from PSN is a little over a gigabyte (1.3 I think, tho I could be wrong).

      • Onikage725

They'd probably port the PC version, if anything.

      • Fraz@TA

Why? The PS version is the original & definitive version of FF VII.

      • Onikage725

Because PC versions are easier to port (example, KoTOR is the PC version and not the xbox version, to the point of even accepting some PC mods). Also, if they did the PSX version then, just like on PSN, they would have to incorporate a "disc-swap" mechanic.

      • pajman sarafzadeh

Correction, KOTOR is the MAC version, OSX port

      • pdSlooper

My guess is, Square Enix's not going to release a half-assed port of FF7 just because there are some devices that can handle it. They're going to wait till the stars and planets align, and the sun shines favorably upon them...or at least until they have plenty of high quality internal "resources" (experienced, trusted employes and capital) to devote fully on an FF7 project. While that's going on, they'll want to be assured of revenue from other projects, else they risk going into debt or bankruptcy. They'll also want to release FF7 at a time when an optimal number of consumers have devices that can play it, to exploit enthusiasm for sales.

      • Dueler

But they aren't like that, they actually said they'd try look into porting vii once vi is finished.

And as for iPhones not being powerful enough, my JB 4s could play pretty much any ps1 rom I threw at it, I'm sure my 5s is gonna be just fine.

      • XvEsunavX

Ps1 titles... Tomb raider was released. They have decent ps1/2 bios engines down. Shouldn't be hard to ff7-9 and make millions. File size will be nuts but that's our problem.

      • diaskeaus

The key to that statement is that for Square, it isn't feasible. And I'd take them at their word, because if they don't feel capable to the task, you definitely don't want them trying. Sounds like there has been a dearth of talent in the office recently.

    • clompah

It's considered the best because it was 3d and actually came out in America with its full title including number( other games had different numbers when they came to America if they even came) but story wise ff6 had the best one of all time. Of all time (Kanye reference)

    • toby7ten

The people who played only FF 7 onwards consider it the best of all time. Those who've played 6 & 7 often have a different opinion :oP

      • themostunclean

Also known as "people that only like the series because it looks pretty and who are cosplay attention junkies".

    • Mr. Brown

FF7 is overrated. It's just popular and considered one of the best RPGs of all time because it was the first one Square actually put any effort into marketing in the U.S.
The story and presentation in FF6 is far superior to 7.

  • RelientKSoCal

I certainly hope that frame around the gameplay scenes was strictly for the trailer. I will NOT buy this game if it doesn't fill the 4 inch screen or lacks Retina support.

  • khann

Finally! I hated those creepy 3D versions. I prefer this graphical style.

    • Inaba-kun

Creepy? What an odd thing to say.

Look at Square's recent release on 3DS - Bravely Default, to see how they have now totally mastered the 3D chibi style. The game looks beautiful, and far prettier than any 2D RPG.

  • ImJPaul

God. That music bring back such great memories. Ya. The trailer sucked but I could listen to that over and over.

    • ImJPaul

Between this, final fantasy 7 and Chrono trigger these are by far my favorite soundtracks and the ones that bring back the fondest memories from video games finest years. :-)

  • basil

    For SMARTPHONE

    • 61050

      thats how they roll

  • NinjaKitteh

Gods, I'm glad I've been done with Squenix since they merged. What a joke.

    • mclifford82

      Congrats.

      • NinjaKitteh

Thank you. It is indeed something to celebrate.

      • ImJPaul

You've boycotted one of the worlds largest, most successful video game developers? Maybe it's time to suck it up and drop whatever petty grudge you have against them for whatever reason? You've missed out on some really good games between all the platforms. Just saying.

    • ImJPaul

That is assuming they didn't like send a hitman to kill you or something. Speaking of Hitman....ya, they own the rights to that too.

    • NinjaKitteh

What is everyone's problem? If I'm not into Squenix like I was Square that's my thing. I had a great time playing Square games up until FF IX which was really the end for me. I don't get the aggressive tone you people are leaving. I do think that trailer is a joke, literally. I mean come on, they've been talking forever how they're delaying FF VI supposedly to do the whole 3D treatment for it like the rest of the early games, and than that's what they show. It has to be some joke on their part. But why you guys think I deserve attitude because I lost interest in Square is beyond me. My tastes changed, I'm sorry, it happens to some people as they get older.

      • Onikage725

"Everyone?" It was one guy :p

      • NinjaKitteh

You're right, pardon my miscommunication. It was one assjole.

    • 21tigermike

You could always do Emu--- *muffled*

  • Siemova

Really, Squeenix didn't "release" the trailer... Final Fantasy Network just captured it from a live stream, which explains the blurriness and low resolution. No doubt it'll look a bit nicer when it actually is released.

I hope the game itself isn't too far off, either.

  • mclifford82

Between this and Final Fantasy X & X-2 Remastered for Vita in March, it looks like I'm going to be getting just as much Square mobile playtime next year as this one. Works for me!

  • Echoen

I knew it. Milk others with discounts on every FF and then follow up with a full price new release. :D

    • 21tigermike

You're ... surprised that they plan to sell this game at... full price.. when it first comes out? You can't be serious.

FF6 is unquestionably a top 5 SNES game, and possibly the best RPG ever made.

The iOS Version will be about 15 bucks and the Android version (for obvious reasons) will be free.

      • Echoen

No sir, I'm not surprised as this was my prediction like I said. Milking the fans in the best possible way. First bring down what's currently available so those on the fence will bite. Then reel in more sales with another huge release. I don't think it's disgraceful or anything. It's a great and totally legit move for the company.

    • HansKaosu

      How is this Milking..

  • eventide

It appears to be a pretty remake but hard to tell through all that smudge.

  • diaskeaus

I'm hoping they will actually outsource the character pixel art to a company that is playing the game with the Amano portraits, instead of a company that couldn't care less like they did with FFV.

I love FFV, but whenever a dialog box pops up I squirm.

  • kelso10

I don't care what FF game is made again. I've been begging for 6 for years

I do hope the added dungeons are on there from the GBA version.

  • praxcelis

Loved all the FF games in the past, except for XIII. Played em. Played em. Played em.

How bout blowing my mind with new stuff, SE?

I think it's time you guys made a final final fantasy before it all ends up being your final death.

  • Anotherworld

This is IMO the best FF game...Can't wait..Hope they don't delay the Android version...iOS gets all the treatment at first.

  • ap3604

Square Enix can kiss my .....

They are lazy pieces of trash that simply come out with a new game for a quick buck, then leave it for dead and NEVER update it again.

Example: Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger STILL haven't been updated to the 4 inch screen of the iPhone 5/5s and it's been TWO YEARS.

Imagine once iOS 7 controllers become more and more popular for gaming and how nice it would be to have support for it on a Final Fantasy game? Nope! Since it's Square Enix you can bet they won't ever update their games with anything meaningful down the line.

Imagine once Apple comes out with a new screen size in 2014 and how easy it would be to simply update the game to the new size? Nope! Since it's Square Enix you can bet they won't ever update their games with anything meaningful down the line.

Until they change their ways Square Enix doesn't deserve a dime from me or anyone else.

  • HansKaosu

    Best Final Fantasy game <3

  • http://www.NFOhump.com/ Sabin Figaro

That looks absolutely terrible, just as I feared it would :( it looks like the redraws we got in FFV and similar to FFD. Disgusting-looking RPGmaker rubbish with horrible proportions that look like they've been stretched. Oh we'll, I guess it was too much to expect an FFIV-PSP style redraw :(

  • TurboRuhland

I still am not sure on this one. I have an SNES and a copy of this game, and I also have the GBA version. Problem being I don't have anything that can play GBA games anymore.

I wish they would have done it like FFII or even FFIII/IV. The 3D would have been awesome, but I liked the sprite style of I and II better than this style.

  • Vixay Yang

I am still waiting for a remake like they did with the ds games.

  • DeInit

I got shivers from hearing that theme again.

  • Geof LeBaron

    2800 yen?

    • Shaun James Musgrave

The trailer is cut from a longer reel. The 2800 yen thing at the beginning is for Dragon Quest 8, which immediately preceded FF6's trailer. No price mentioned yet for FF6, but I'd guess it will be the same as FF4/5/The After were.
