If you've got an iPhone 4 or newer, iPad 2 or newer, iPad mini or a 5th generation iPod touch, today is your lucky day. Apple just released iOS 7 to the wild, and you can grab it right now by either connecting your device(s) to iTunes or going in to your device settings, hitting the "General" tab, and then tapping "Software Update." Keep in mind, the update just went live, and Apple's servers seem pretty slammed right now.

If you've got an older device, don't fret. Apple recently tweaked the App Store so you're not totally out in the cold. Additionally, if you've got a device that's on the lower-end of the spec pool, it might not be a bad idea to hang on to iOS 6 for a bit to see how much iOS 7 impacts game performance.

  • jeffyg3

Awesome for my iPhone 4 and iPad Mini. Well I guess it's time to jailbreak that iPod 4G, woot :/

    • pcburcham

So you thought it was pretty fluid on the iPhone 4? I want to bite the bullet and get a 5S, but if 7 runs ok on it I may wait another year even.

      • Skylighter1996

My sister and little brother both have a 4 and they're running iOS 7 smoothly.

      • themostunclean

iOS 7 on an iPhone 4 is cosmetic only. It has hardly any of the new features.

I did a side by side with a 5 and can tell you it will run, but not at all what I'd call smoothly. There's noticeable lag and frame drops when compared to the iPhone 5.

  • Ederfb

Update done and like the new look and functionalities so far. The only problem now, the TouchArcade app icone doesn't fit the iOS 7 look... :( hehe

  • Morgan01

Great, what do I do with my iPad 1 paperweight? When does the iPad 2 become a paperweight?

    • sticktron

iPad 1 stopped getting updates at 5.1.1, nothing new here.

    • Karzay

You have 1 year left... probably.

    • themostunclean

As long as iPad mini 1 is relevant, the iPad 2 will be as well. Same guts.

Maybe a little more than a year.

      • Morgan01

Each update is a sour reminder of how my iPad I stopped receiving support a mere 2 years after purchase, a looming reality that the end of support for the iPad II probably lies somewhere in the near future, and

      • Morgan01

...wonderment when they will decide to stop supporting my iPad 4, though hopefully not the meager 2 years of my iPad I.

If this is your sense of living dangerously, why don't you go outside & see the real world?

      • Adams Immersive

"Live dangerously" is a figure of speech used in English. It doesn't imply that a bug in a new OS release is a literal physical peril.

  • sinistabanana

I GOT IT ON MY IPAD MINI ITS EPICCCC

  • Scary Guns

I got io7 and I noticed the panorama wallpapers do not work as advertised. All you see is a small portion of increase as you try to twirl your phone to see more of the image.
All in all I think ios7 looks ugly. My phone feels like some fisher price toy now...

    • Retero

You will grow to like it. I've used it for 3 months. ;)

    • Atomos

They took it out in the GM. The panorama feature was cut.

    • themostunclean

Get your facts straight before complaining. They never "advertised" panorama wallpapers. It was a so-called hidden feature that was removed before iOS 7 GM was even released. And the old iOS is ugly compared to this, 7 is much cleaner and fluid.

Some people just love to hate on anything different than what their used to, I guess.

      • http://rekzkarz.com/ REkzkaRZ

Why can't @toucharcade-b135fe8475909059025ab974e58d3901:disqus say it looks ugly?
@toucharcade-06d8366b7bb4d50379161b62bd11b44e:disqus -- you like it, they don't. They are not a hater -- and I'm surprised you talk so much smack to someone named "Scary Guns"....? Deathwish much?
Some people love to harsh on people who are posting what IMO seems a valid critique.

      • defunct32

This! Is it wrong not to like something and have opinions? Not everyone is going to like all that is new.

      • Protoman

I wouldn't let themostunclean get to you. I've seen him argue from both sides of your point. I have a theory he's just an inconsistent grumpy old man who likes to argue.

    • darkcheetah

I agree. It looks too "Fisher Price" to me now. Aesthetics are a subjective thing however, and I hope most people like the new look.

      • darkcheetah

Actually it's funny that the OS is sort of plasticky looking considering they're rolling out a plastic phone. lol

  • araczynski

JFC!!!! if i paid attention and realized they'd limit the number of
icons visible in a folder I'd have told them to frack off with this
update. HATE HATE HATE this, time to look into jailbreaking, this is
the stupidest crap i've ever seen in an update. why couldn't it be a
    fracking option??!?!?

    • McCREE

You know you can swipe to another page, right?

      • araczynski

the point of the folders (for me) was so i didn't have to swipe around from screen to screen but could group thing how i wanted, now they added more crap to swipe through.

      • themostunclean

How could they possibly fit dozens of icons on a single screen? Some if my folders have 20+ apps in them, there's no way that could all be visible at once without making the icons super tiny.

      • araczynski

Who said anything about dozens, having 20 fit on one pop up was good, why would you make the popup now a faction of the sing and hold only a fraction of the info it used to? That just strikes me as an absolutely stupid UI move.

Actually, as I'm thinking about it, I'm guessing it looks petfect on a tiny screen like the iPhone, there's probably no wasted space between the icons. So they probably used a percentage calculation for sizing of the popup, but didn't bother to check whether there's room for more icons, perhaps a bug then. Not sure how something as simpleahthis made it through beta though. Maybe theywere too busy giving Siri that heder change to be bothered with the UI.

      • themostunclean

It does look good on the smaller iPhone screen but I just installed on iPad and you're right. They could have fit many more in there. I'm happy enough with the rest of the update not to be bothered by it though.

      • https://www.facebook.com/DigitalDistillery Scot Damn

Oh great, another "Jobs is gone, Apple has gone to sh*t" comment.

I'm sure there will be plenty of things you will like with 7 that Android doesn't have, including a stable OS. Maybe a nap would help. I know I could use one.

This just goes to show people don't like change, NAY, they Hate change. Change is inevitable and essential to a successful business. We should instead welcome it.

      • araczynski

I'm thinking the popup thing on iPads is a bug, but no, so far nothing new has made up for even a fraction of how annoying this is.

      • http://rekzkarz.com/ REkzkaRZ

Seemed like a valid complaint, coupled with a ridiculous rant.
I'd say "get a life", but I'm reading the comments on TA about iOS 7 upgrade, so obv I can't claim superiority there.

  • bigrand1

Nope, not gonna download this right away because these new things from Apple are famous for being buggy at first. I'll wait for impressions and get a feel for what to expect. Also, having to re-learn a bunch of stuff is exciting, but sometimes confusing, and a lot of older apps might not run as well, and I'm not gonna risk it til I see how it goes. Gonna hold onto the older version for now. There's no rush to jump on this.

    • Retero

There are very few bugs in this edition. This build is very stable and all the apps I use work perfectly. So don't hesitate if your worried about bugs.

      • bigrand1

Thanks for some input! How about old apps? See, I got over 600 apps easily and lots are older. There can be issues, especially this time, as this edition re-does so many things at once to a whole different level. It's gonna seem like I got a brand new device! (iPad 4 128GB is what I have now)
Anyone else run this thing yet?

      • Retero

The oldest app I have is the original ishoot and it seems to be working smoothly. I have no idea how it will work with all your apps. Betas one and two made a few apps stop working but since beta 4 all of my apps have worked again. Also, I don't know if they will ever support those apps again. Good luck whatever you do.

  • nailoso

I love this iOS 7. It's pretty cool. Took forever to get on my iPod, kept stopping. It stopped twice on my iPhone 5. Feels like a whole new phone (even more then when I got my iPhone 5 last month)

  • Mekklesack

I like the update, but keep in mind, running other apps, slows down game play in games like Modern Combat 4. Turning off the apps (at this stage of the new OS's lifespan) will restore the frame rate. "Whew!"

does Gridlee and Remote File Manager (SNES emu released a couple of weeks ago on itunes, and pulled a day later) work with ios7?

    • JudahJames

Still works on my iPad2 running iOS 7. Love me some Super Caslevania iv

  • SmugPugD

I am having trouble with my unlock code (going really slow) so I had to disable it. I'm waiting a bit to update my other iOS devices, but so far the iphone 4s looks like it's only minor annoyances. I love the new multitasking interface, and automatic app updates have been smooth so far.
The new find my phone features, for me, are some of the best. Peace of mind never hurts!
I'm not sure how I like the new look, but it is radically different so I'm going to give it a bit. So far Mailbox and my other updated apps are working.

  • Scary Guns

Anyone else notice panorama wallpapers don't reveal as much as they should as you move your phone. Mine only reveals .5 cm from the edge of my screen maybe less.

    • themostunclean

As stated numerous times on the internet (and by people in this very comment thread) the panorama wallpapers were removed before iOS 7 moved out of beta. There's a reason they never made it part of the official change log. It eats up way too much memory, especially when used on the home screen.

      • Scary Guns

So... Anyone know why panorama isn't working for me as panoramic wallpaper?

P.S. Lol... If we don't help this guy get irritated he might lose his day job.

  • Carvool

I'm not sure if it's worth it for me unless a new jailbreak crops up. I haven't checked it out yet; I'm sure iOS 7 is nice, but I cannot live without SBSettings and folders-in-folders with infinite capacity.

  • Derprozess

Maybe it is the placebo syndrome, but my iPad 3 looks to work more faster, in every aspect.

  • worldcitizen1919

When does this get released? I'm still showing 6.1.3 update available? I Avent updated to that yet. Do I have to update to that to get ios 7?

    • WoeOfAftermath

I can't say for sure about this release but, when I upgraded to iOS 6, I didn't have the latest version of iOS 5 and I was able to upgrade without any problems.

  • bobbstermang

I keep getting random resets with my iPad mini.

    • uaq

      Well done.

  • JudahJames

I'm loving the way apps scroll and shoot around with iOS 7. Now I feel like I'm in the Lawnmower Man but without the stupid headgear, gyroscope or bad acting. :)

  • Remote_

No probs for me. Downloaded via iTunes and updated without a hitch.

Obviously it's a mixed result in some ways with the new iOS, but so far I'm very pleased. But then, I'm a geek and love fiddling with new things.

Folders are a bit annoying, sure, and it's *occasionally* a bit laggy, but overall it's an absolute pleasure to use with iPhone 4S.

One thing I noticed, which is non-game related, is you can't swipe to delete emails any more. Bit of a pain, isn't it? And I remain on the fence with the new Game Center until it proves itself.

Off topic briefly, isn't Infinity Blade III grand fun? :-)

    • themostunclean

You can swipe to delete emails. It's not ambi-swipe anymore though, you have to sled to the left.

      • Remote_

Great - thanks for the tip! So used to swiping right I never considered going left.

    • defunct32

Oh, IB III is one hell of a game I tell ya!

  • ShawnMak

Hey, anybody know how to get rid of the auto-suggested sites on Safari's new tabs? I don't really want an ESPN shortcut.

    • Lucy

click the bookmark logo in safari (bottom right); click word bookmark (top left); click favourites; click edit… and then you should be right to delete them and add your own if you would like :)

  • Guest

it's been a while since I booted this up, so... gotta ask again.. any signs of Game Center achievements?!

  • Kyle

Even on iPad 4 the animations are sometimes a bit laggy. The parallax effect doesn't seem to work at all and I have to look closely to notice any movement.

Only showing 9 icons at a time in folders are a bit of a pain as I will have to rethink how I use them. They could easily fit 11 more icons per folder page on the iPad.

But the thing I dislike the most is that in multitasking you can't tap on the app screenshot while animated. So if you've just scrolled through a lot of apps you have to wait for the animation to stop or try to hit the small app icon underneath the screenshot. It feels like actually switching between 3-4 apps at a time is much more awkward on iOS7.

    • JudahJames

You can put more than 9 apps; you just have to scroll left or right.

      • Kyle

The scrolling left/right is what I'm complaining about. I used folders to avoid having to scroll through homescreens, so now having to scroll through folders ruins that.

It might help if folders didn't go back to page 1 when you close them.

    • Thunder13

I'm not too sure if I should like it on my iPhone 5 or not. I think I was expecting something slightly different.

  • Drizzt79

Hang on to iOS 6? I'm still on OS 5 and that was a huge disappointment for me with my iPhone 4... significant performance drop, issues with iCloud, etc. This made me hesitant to upgrade to OS 6 (especially in terms of performance). I can't imagine what iOS 7 would do to my iPhone 4. Has anyone tried? Can it handle it?

    • http://rekzkarz.com/ REkzkaRZ

Read the Arstechnica article, "New lease on life or death sentence? iOS 7 on the iPhone 4".
However, I updated to OS 6 on iPhone 4 and can't point out a single performance issue you listed. I think that's a bit paranoid not to go to 6. You probably are blocked from *TONS* of apps w/o IOS 6...?

  • Dark NRG

So tryin to update, and my iPhone 4S comes up with : IOS 6.1.3 YOUR SOFTWARE IS UP TO DATE
    WTF?!

    • JudahJames

How much free space to you have? You need at least 3.2GB open or you can't update.

    • themostunclean

Don't update OTA if you're getting this message. Use iTunes.

  • TanRnet

Anyone having issues seeing their apps that need updated? One minute they show and then when I go back they are gone saying all apps are up to date. Strange.

    • Atomos

You're not alone. Not sure if it's an iOS 7 problem, or an AppStore problem since it's probably getting hit pretty hard today with all the updates.

    • epik5

i have that issue, i cant even see my paid apps! time to downgrade to ios 6.1.3! and i heard ways how to.

      • somedumbgamer

Seems like you may want to consider using a time machine

    • themostunclean

iOS 7 updates apps automatically. You don't have to push update anymore. You can turn this off in your settings.

      • TanRnet

I thought that initially but I had it turned off from the beginning, they seem to be showing again so I'm assuming it's just from so many people in the App Store.

    • vic_viper_001

I had the problem before updating to iOS 7. Must be an App store problem... happened when I used iTunes on my PC too.

  • armilla

I like iOS 7, but I sure like the significant performance drop for 4S; anybody know if a future update could resolve this?

    • armilla

I mean I don't like the performance drop. Oops!

    • Jake7905

No problem on my 4s, running IOS 7 and it runs great.

  • Psiufoxx

Absolutely loving iOS 7 on my iPhone 4. Download without hesitation!!!

  • Jay G

The font under the icons (and most everywhere, including the battery and signal indicators) is too thin, too small, and has too little contrast. The motion (animation?) when you open and close apps or return to the home screen makes the ui feel sluggish. I have yet to find anything to set as wallpaper that looks good in contrast to the crappy, washed-out color palette of the font and icons. The internal app related screens (phone, camera, calc, etc...) are all just a jumbled-up mish-mash of seemingly unrelated styles and color palettes.
All-in-all, I'm not happy that I upgraded. In fact, I hate it. Worst thing I have ever seen come out of Apple. Where's a DeLorean when you need it?

  • Lohengriehn

Want to backstep also, Its a pain to move through additional pages inside a folder. Just 9 icons...come on, Apple....

Well, i wish they had added a b/w switch too....

    • Lohengriehn

Accidently pulling up the control center when scrolling
Overall problem to navigate, localize my apps inside new multi-paged folders
Flat layout, bad looking gamecenter, lots of white filled spaces that hurt your eyes

overall all looks like what happened to the xbox dashboard to me. if you know what I mean, do not upgrade to ios7 imo! i already hate it so much, im about to buy a new mini ipad with ios6 on it :-(

    • themostunclean

It only welcomes you when you launch a game. Hardly intrusive. It's no different than it has been for years now, just looks different.

    • lordyokomoto

If you log into game centre in the settings section on iPhone/ipad it shouldn't ask u again....it will just say hi......

      • JudahJames

I just had three different games going across three different devices now it wants to merge them. I can't really see any benefits to Game Center. It just seems unnecessary. Can anyone tell me it's positives?

  • Ramaz1234

Does anyone know how to delte background apps now?

  • Morgan01

Absolutely hate IOS 7, especially the look, arg. There goes Apple, with their "vision", trying to cram it down our throats. If it's what Apple wants, they force it on us. Apple is not one to let consumers have choices.
