The wait is almost over: Star Command is coming to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on May 2. Yup, you read that right -- War Balloon's sci-fi battle and tragedy simulation game is coming later this week. As planned, it'll debut as a Universal app for $2.99. Also, it apparently won't support in-app purchases, which is neat.

If you haven't been in the loop, this celebratory launch trailer should get you up to speed in no time. Watch as the player's ship turns into a burning, useless husk! Note how hull breaches create vacuums and suck crew members out of their rooms! When things go bad in Star Command, they go real bad, man.

We'll continue covering the game, of course and should have a review and some other nice things ready around launch. But, anyway: hey, guys, Star Command! It's finally coming!

  • MR. King β™›

YAY! I hope it has hours of gameplay.

    • Game.PN

Well, the developers said,4-5 hours of gameplay and it's not sandbox. But in the next updates they will gonna make it sandbox

      • StarCommandGame

        That's the plan.

      • Joey_C83

      • Game.PN

Any multiplayer via Gamecenter on this awesome game??!!!!!

      • Hector

4-5 hours with no replay value? That's disappointing.

      • jamarohn

There's been many console games with short campaigns with little replay value for $60. This here's a game you play on a phone for $3. Either that or you can get a latte and sip on it for 8 hours...

      • jamarohn

BTW, if you stretch that latte to 16 hours, it will have some replay value. πŸ™‚

      • Decoy_Octopus

Shouldn't compare cellphone games to console games

      • Phoen1x1

Well Hector basically is doing that when he says he is disappointed that a 3 dollar game only gives him 5 hours of game play.

      • LunaKnight2

Every game has replay hours xD

  • captainChocolade

Oh cool, will get it, too, when it becomes free!

    • Andy Charalambous

      I don't like you.

    • Benjamin Rodriguez

or at least 66% off considering 70% of the content is missing. Start off at one buck, then add the rest in like 33% increment content packs for 1 buck each. Why would I want to pay for a game at the price it was stated to be, for the product that wasn't delivered as stated to be.

      • StarCommandGame

The game is three dollars man - give it a rest.

      • Joey_C83

He's going to buy it when it is released, so fast, his thumbs are going to have abrasions from entering his password.

      • iamthekiller

You need to be more of a dick to these stupid asshole complainers that know absolutely nothing about game development.

      • wildperson

        Not the best PR strategy.

      • Benegesserit

Seems to work for that guy that made Fez. No sales issues for him.

      • Mike Collins

        This is hardly Fez.

      • Andy Russell

Well, if the other 66% had been in it may have been $9 - you ever think of that ? Stop being so entitled.

      • REkzkaRZ

Nice one. That's a crack up.
"Bitch and moan, and then go spend $60 on a console game"?!?!?!
(Side note: Pensions & social security-- those are not 'entitlements', those are earned benefits. I'm just clarifying for people who might've swallowed the 'double-think'...)

      • drloony

Why don't you create a game with a vast scope and appealing Sci-Fi theme so we can all complain about that?

      • Sunshine

Are you really quibbling over a couple of bucks when you don't actually know what's in the game yet?

Are you seriously saying that the trailer says "I'm only worth $1, but I'm totally going to screw you out of $3, SUCKA!"

      • MidianGTX

Sorry dude, but you need a lesson in game development. If you own a console or play PC games it's a pretty safe bet that several times over the course of your gaming life you've bought games for $40+ that are only a small percentage of all the crazy ideas the developer started out with.

    • Decoy_Octopus

And you wonder why cellphone games are so watered down.

  • Andy Charalambous

Set phasers to fun. I bet TA has been waiting to use that line ever since the game was first announced, which was around 74 years ago. πŸ™‚

    • StarCommandGame

      Beam up for excitement!

      • REkzkaRZ

Hey, don't put your beam on my leg!

  • MidianGTX

I say this with good intention: Try not to get overhyped about this. After so much time it'd be all too easy to build up an idealised image of how it should be in your head, but you'll only set yourself up for disappointment.

I'm expecting a decent game, nothing revolutionary. Let's try to keep things in perspective and judge it for what it is.

    • Bischi777

I really liked what I saw in the Gameplay videos. I know there is no planet surface exploration and 70% other ideas missing but i'm still very hyped and I cant change it πŸ™‚

      • FlipBeef97

But are they gonna add that stuff later? πŸ™

      • StarCommandGame

Those are the plans. There are three guys on our team. We have always said we would love to do planet exploration, the ability to beam onto other ships and a totally open sandbox gameplay. Hopefully in future releases we can get all those features in.

      • Joey_C83

Open Sandbox or Randomized (rogue-like?) would increase replay value significantly! Either way, this is an instabuy!

      • StarCommandGame

Sandbox. It already has the rouge-like element with some of the base missions, but really we want something more sandbox in nature.

      • FlipBeef97

AWESOME!!!!! πŸ˜€ you have my money on May 2nd! πŸ˜€

  • Outrager

Do you have an estimate to how much storage the game uses when installed?

    • StarCommandGame

      130 Megs

      • roguewaver

That's much smaller than I expected.

      • iamthekiller

        That's what she said.

      • StarCommandGame

        Well played, sir. Well played.

      • REkzkaRZ

        That's what she also said.

      • PureRumble

Ah ok now i get it! Took me a few seconds :-/

i first thought starcommandgame is a she that said 130mb is much smaller than what they had initially expected! Silly me :-/

      • FlipBeef97

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I hate it when a small game takes up SOOO much space, like the Oregon Trail by Gameloft, it's 1.5GB when it is somewhat a small game. :/ anyway... Back on topic, 130MB is awesome!!!!!! πŸ˜€

  • Darnel Johnston

I stopped caring about this game over a year ago. To many delays, and only delivering 30% of what the kickstarter said. no thanks.

    • StarCommandGame

      Sorry to hear that.

    • Joey_C83

Yet here you are... caring... commenting... caring some more.

      • MrFoobar1

If he only cares about having stopped caring then that's clearly mere meta-caring.

  • DotComCTO

I know it isn't the game they planned it to be. I've read multiple previews, so I know what the game is and isn't. That said, I supported the Kickstarter, so I plan to buy the game when it is released.

Do I wish for the game the Coombs' originally envisioned? Definitely! I also realize that Warballoon is a tiny dev studio, and they were beset with delays because they tried different approaches and couldn't make the game fun. I'm sure that lead to numerous code rewrites, and I'm quite positive this totally affected the QA effort.

Sometimes things sound great on paper, but don't work out in real life. I'm glad they were able to get part of their vision into a game. I'm hoping for the best, and we'll see where that takes us. πŸ™‚

    • StarCommandGame

We think of it a lot like star wars. Lucas wrote the original script and realized "I just can't get this all in one movie" and broke it up. We did something very similar - things we had to have and things we thought would be great. We have every intention of bringing those to life, and much like Star Wars, with more resources to make them better than the first time (3 guys is not enough for a game like this).

      • FlipBeef97

Hey, this game supports iPod Touch 4G right?

      • Gabriel.Voyager

Ok, but the time between one part and another? Mounth, years, geological era?

      • StarCommandGame

Significantly shorter. We have an engine, all the core mechanics and gameplay, asset pipeline and an understanding of how to do it correctly. We think further expansions will be pretty fast (but we won't commit to anything cause that his killed us before).

      • REkzkaRZ

Like Star Wars? Hmmm.. Please no midi-chlorians in episode 1 -- errr, episode 4? Midi-chlorians were weak-sauce.

      • DotComCTO

Ah, but the question is: which platform(s) will receive the future iterations of SC? As I understand it, your next focus is the desktop, and it may remain that way for a while...unless mobile sales are stellar (no pun intended).

      • Aaron Sullivan

I believe the plan is to play around with things on the desktop and then bring them back to the mobile game. But that's just my memory...

      • Micha

So you plan on doing terrible prequells after the initial series is completed? :-p

  • Eric

Does it feel cramped or slow on iphone 4/4s?

  • Wasabininja

I'm excited this is finally coming out and curious to see how it changes in the future updates. I am wondering though, are there more ships for players to use with different layouts or is it just that one ship in all the videos?

  • araczynski

keep forgetting they're planning a PC version, not clear whether these are all to be identical, or if the PC/OSX version will have more stuffz, guess i'll hold off for a year and see what happens.

  • joaquin_ondamoon

Good for you guys. It's an instabuy for me on release day. So tired of people hating on this before anyone's even played it. Don't judge it on what it was SUPPOSED to be, judge it on what it is. I can wait for the 'other 70%', as long as the core game rocks, and the additional content is solid as well. This was an ambitious release. Let's stop slamming these guys for wanting to produce a quality game.

    • Gabriel.Voyager

Is a bad attitude to hate before try, but also love before try πŸ˜‰
And if you don't like SC?

      • REkzkaRZ

Then it's $3 to support developers making something truly ambitious.
What's so bad about that? Isn't your latte $3? Jeez!

  • vpmckamie

    Can't wait

  • bestkevin

    Looks cool

  • LeeDot

I realize that this is probably a thing that most people won't care about and it won't stop me from trying the game out but sweet mother of god just pick an art style and stick with it. The mix of pixel art and non pixel art just makes them both look terrible imo.

  • Sailor Jensen

I'm excited for this game. You guys did a great job from what I can see and I hope my purchase helps with future updates/endeavors. Even if it stays what it is at its core, I'm glad I can help a couple guys make a living doing what they love. Getting to where it is now I'm sure was no easy feat, don't get discouraged over the negative nancies. Rock on guys!

  • otakuzod

I've been looking forward to this from the first trailer I saw (last summer?). $3 is truly a small pittance (to me, anyway) for a game that was easily worth $10 (again, to me) from the gameplay walkthrough videos alone. I'm just glad to see the game come to fruition. Yes, I understand its only 30% of the vision with more to follow, but I'll gladly take that. Hell, $3 is cheaper than a beer, or even a gallon of gas. I really can't see harping on that price point.

  • tulsy

I plan on buying the game day one, but there has been a mix of previews that range from luke-warm to great. Do you have any plans of a demo for people that are on the fence? I mean some people would complain that they only get 10% of the game in the demo version and that is only 3% of what was promised on KickStarter....

  • AceSox

Jk instabuy for me. Been waiting forever!

  • Jet_Black

I'll buy into this too, especially with the generous updates the developer has promised. The slower exploration aspect of the game is more what I'm interested in rather than the space battles shown, but a balance of both would be great.

  • dariusjr98

    Heh, May 2nd is my b-day πŸ™‚

  • grits

Will buy πŸ˜‰ Congrats on release!

  • John Casey Keyser

I'm not sure that people realize how many games have been released that don't have 100% of the original mechanics or features in them. They are all design decisions that had to be scrapped for one reason or another. It's not the disappointment that's ridiculous about small game releases, it's the sense of entitlement. Are you entitled to anything anyone else has made (Kickstarter notwithstanding)? If so, why? I am on a two man team developing an RPG for iOS, and it's much more of a process than most people realize or care to even think about. The devs of Star Command have just made the process more public for fans, but a lot of great games go through similar things. If you don't want to know about what goes on behind the scenes, don't read the releases. Just buy the game, or wait for reviews. 30% of the original concept of Star Command might be better than 100% of half the things on the App Store. The entitlement attitude is ridiculous. Video games are my life, but they're not, say, natural rights. The devs didn't sign a contract with you (again, Kickstarter...), so they owe you absolutely nothing.

  • Bloodangel

    Can't wait!
But is it 30% of the developers ideas in the game... Or 30% of what we was expecting?
I ask this as if its 30% of what developers wanted to include.... This may be equal to 60% of what we was told it would include... So we get a lot more than what we think.
If you know what I mean

  • Bloodangel

For example.... Developers eventually tell us 50 features they wanted to get in to the game originally.
But they state to us at the start that it will have these 30 features in the game.

30% of the 30 features we was expecting means we get 9 of the expected features.

Where's 30% of the 50 they originally wanted means we get 15 features

    • Bloodangel

So if its 30% of the 50 features they originally wanted in the game.... That's 50% of the actual features we thought we was getting.... So there for, we get more features in game than the 30% we are expecting

      • FutureMan

Your math is off. The actual percentage is 44.8.

      • jamarohn

Whatever that's going to launch will be 100% of what's available for $3. That is all.

  • Aventador

    SHIP NAME : Red Dwarf
CREW : Lister, Rimmer, Cat , Kryten , Kochanski and need to watch show again for more names

    Bring it on.
I really hope Star Command has at least some Red Dwarf references.

    Also :

1.) I want a damn central PC that can be upgraded and that shouts alert , danger, we have been boarded , etc....
And be able to upgrade it for small bonuses to all other systems ( maybe overheating option for all systems ? )
    2. ) where are damn droids, androids, robots, I want to have robots as a part of crew, like Data or Kryten or any other sci fi show ( ok maybe not something like Kryten. : )

    • curtisrshideler

Heck yeah! I wish this game just had RD characters and sprites and was called Red Dwarf: Smeg Command.

  • Gilbert Palau

I think some people need to chill. Yes there was a kickstarter, yes they said we would have some kind of adventure with Tracy Lords. It didn't happen, stop moping around it. As a developer, I know all the hoops and loops one has to go, in order to get somethings out the door. Some things make it, and others get cut, for a later time. These are 3 dudes (does the one in the basement counts?) and they, through a lot of hurdles made the game. I don't care if I have to wait a bit, to play a great game, that is being sold for $3 at launch because it doesnt have the cuties they promised initially. They at least are being decent about including them in future updates. Now, how many updates you expect if everyone in the lot decided not to buy the game now, because its missing Tracy Lords in a bikini. Who cares? I would rather see the main idea and interaction on the game out the door, and paying them for the effort of making this iteration of the game if it means more updates down the line. I am going with a free mind into this game that its not going to be the mother of all games, that Tracy Lords is not naked in a scene and I am going to look at it as it is, a different approach in this type of genre and the optimistic mind that it will sell well, so that Warballoon has more resources to make all the necesary expansions. What I would like to know if possible is if the developers have thought of adding some sort of Multiplayer PvP in the future. It would be cool to battle other player's creations and have a leaderboard of sorts. Good Luck to Warballoon and my $2,99 are there for you the second the app hits the store.

  • Bool Zero

This is turning into an interesting upcoming week for me with quite a few titles to anticipate! Can't wait to play this regardless of the controversy the game looks fun to play from the videos, so beam me aboard Wednesday Night!

  • reflipp

  • $P4RT4N

    Yes!!! Instabuy.

  • thiefwriter

So, will this or won't this support iPod touch 4g?

  • Tizz986

I will buy it just because the devs come on sites like this and take feedback and give updates. As a habitual early adopter/beta tester for games, it's maddening trying to get companies like blizzard/EA/whoever to actually respond to a question on their own forums, much less a third party site.

    • Aventador

Yes but you won't see Gameloft or any other big company say " I will punch you in face" or "piss off"
PR is an amazing thing ...

      • FutureMan

You're right, but haven't you ever been at work and wanted to tell someone to piss off? I can appreciate the ability of someone else to be able to do that.

  • mrhakeresq

  • airwa1k

Yes! After weeks of waiting for launch I can finally play on my vacation! Oh wait. My vacation will be over on Wed. STAAARRRRR COMMMAAAANNNDDDD!

  • adamonly

Dudes... No IAP? Wow. Thanks. Instabuy. TA better give u a pumped review.

EVERYBODY! Like their FB, follow their twitter, spread them on your social media!!

And for all u haters who obviously have no idea of what game prices and development costs are like, pls go buy a gameloft game!!! Try iron man 3!

    • adamonly

Oh, my bad, you can't buy iron man 3, it's absolutely FREE! But, you pay for unlocking gameplay! So, I will most happily pay $3 for a game that doesn't cripple gameplay experience and gets updated. Thanks Warballoon!

  • Sean Van Wormer

    Shit just got real

  • LazerTag

I don't even want this game but plan to buy it just to piss off the complainers. πŸ˜‰

$3 to blow shit the &#%! up? ... I'm in. (as long as some red shirts buy it in the end too)

  • grits

They obviously made a PR mistake with the whole 30% comment. As many gamers are proving, honesty does not pay. Most developers could say a similar thing. It's being blown out of proportion. It's an awesome game for three dollars with no IAP, End of story.

  • denisvjcr

    Ready to buy

  • Spongekip

$3 for 4-5 hours of entertainment. Even if only half of that time is actually fun, a 2hr movie rental (never mind ownership) is between $1 and $5. This isn't a rental AND the devs are including any updates in the original price. These days the stuff that had to be cut due to time/money constraints are simply sold later as "dlc" and most of us suckers eat it up. Or even worse, the content is intentionally withheld and sold as day one dlc so the price of a big title can be jacked up another 20%. I commend Warbaloon for having the balls to be honest and fully support them blasting the group of whining "gimme" gamers who think that they are entitled to free lunch for life because that's what they're getting in middle school.

Devs like these and the kickstarter model are pretty much the last hope for an industry that is being consumed by EA's and Activision's and their barrage of shovel ware titles along with the growing iap tumor. They should be supported. I fully plan to buy the game iOS and PC. I'm not expecting Star Citizen or Wastelands 2 but I'm damned sure I'll get my $3 worth of entertainment.

    • Spongekip

Sorry for the text wall. Just wanted to say congrats Warbaloon on being approved and finally being able to see some return on a long hard investment. It looks like what I desperately wanted FTL to be, and at 1/3 the price. Also thank you for sticking with sandbox even with all the shouts of roguelike

  • curtisrshideler

Looking forward to this one still. And if any other content eventually comes, I'll happily update... Especially if it could have Red Dwarf, Star Trek, Star Wars, or Battle Star Galactica rip offs!

  • flyingeye

Did I read that right? No in app purchases? I am officially back on the space train.

  • Zdgames

Lol I'm gonna make a commander shepherd and a Normandy tali will be my main gal...

  • Illuminerdy

Going to buy this 'cause I can wipe my ass with three dollars. I am also unemployed.

  • Soupy

Can't wait for this. Going to be an epic game!

Those who are so set on it being a F2P model need to go to game design school. Or common sense school. Or school.

  • REkzkaRZ

Watch as the nay-saying gripers all purchase the app anyway.
I've never griped or nay-said, and I will be buying it. πŸ˜€
Would've been hilarious if you'd timed it to Star Trek movie release! (Maybe you can ge them to back you for more updates -- just remember, ask for TOO MUCH $$$ and TOO MUCH TIME, then surprise them by coming in cheaper (if you wanna) and earlier!)

  • REkzkaRZ

Why should any of US care that he doesn't care?? I don't care if he cares or not.

  • Brian Sharks

I am really looking forward to this game. Will be downloading first thing on Thurs.

  • kingrocknlr

Its been the ONLY game on my TouchArcade app "watch list" since last June. Now, I'm just not interested anymore.

    • Skullinton

Too bad since you'll probably miss on something really good...

  • Tyburn

Look at those beautiful pixels. I will snap this up now and enjoy every update along the way!

  • Mirkwood

I never thought this day would come

  • Gamer_Kev

Almost gave this up for vaporware. Glad to hear it's finally coming. If it supports my first gen iPad, I'm definitely grabbing it, otherwise I'll just have to be patient until the pc version comes out and play it on my Netbook. Looking forward to it either way.

  • bluspacecow

Sorry for not checking all comments but I'm just about to run off to the gym.

But before I do I want to check something on the release date.

I'm in NZ where it is currently 9:11 PM. Will it be released at Midnight NZST or some time later ? Is it being released on a US timezone timing ?

Looking forward to your guys input once I get back!

  • badr

24hrs to go in Texas... πŸ™‚ Where is Warballoon located anyways?

  • badr

Naming my captain, Major RearPort and my ship: Something Awful

  • khann

I'll instabuy. It looks nice and fun. I really would like the sandbox. Please don't make this full of in app purchases.

  • juegos de yepi

I'm expecting a decent game, nothing revolutionary. Let's try to keep things in perspective and judge it for what it is.
