Blizzard surprised everyone at PAX East last month when they announced that they're working on a new, free-to-play competitive card game based in the World of Warcraft universe called Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, and that following its Mac and PC release the game was set to hit the iPad as well. A Blizzard game on the iPad, cool! The team behind Hearthstone has put together a hands-on video of the game with commentary to explain what's going on, sorta like a TA Plays but without the fart jokes. Check it out.

For another behind-the-scenes look at Hearthstone, the developers released a more documentary style video a few weeks back which talks about the challenges and motivations for making something like Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, and it's definitely worth a look too. It sounds like the team will be releasing more of these in-development looks at Hearthstone as it works towards its intended release sometime later this year, so stay tuned for more.

    Freemium = sh*t

    • araczynski

      Freemium AND Blizzard? = diarrhea.

      • iValerio90

        true, true.

      • Boris Yankov

How many freemium Blizzard games have you played?

      • araczynski

none, and never will judging by the POS that they release that are NOT freemium.

        2 words...Diablo 3. 2 more words....Auction House.

How about Starcraft: Broodwar for iPad?
    At least the campaign

    That looks really cool!

I thought this was just an iOS implementation of the existing card game, but it appears to be more streamlined/simple. Really curious how the freemium-ness works out. I'm willing to drop some money on it if it's actually good/fair IAP prices. The amount of polish looks ridiculous so far. Really looking forward to it.

    F2P? Card game? No thanks.

  • praxcelis

No. No, and no. With a side of no.

  • phonecats

I'm ready to get obsessed with this.
Frost Mage son you think this is a game!?

  • Morgan01

Do we remember the fiasco that was D3? Blizzard plus IAP? Now that's a recipe for disaster.

To all the guys saying this game will be shit since it's F2P and from Blizzard, you definitely did not read Blizzard's announcement.
It seems that the only way we would have to pay is if you want to gain cards faster. You can buy a 5 card pack for 1$, but you can also win the same card pack by winning games (number of games necessary not already announced).

I'm really waiting for this game, hope I'll be participating in the beta :-).

This certainly looks like a good change from Magic
