Sonic Jump [$2.99] was kinda weird because Sonic, you know, runs a lot. In fact, he runs really fast and that's always kinda been the main point of emphasis for most of the good Sonic games. Plus, auto-runners are a big deal on the App Store; it's clotted with them. Jump had us scratching our heads, considering all this. But, hey, looks like someone at SEGA got the memo. A new auto-runner starring Sonic is coming -- and it's coming "soon" to iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Sonic Dash, as it's called, is a 3D runner. From the boilerplate, we gather it's endless, as opposed to stage-based. And that's about where our knowledge ends. From the SEGA blog:

Our hero will be doing what he does best — making a fast and frenzied 3D dash through stunning stages, as he navigates over, around, and through interminable dangers. Challenge your friends and compete on leaderboards — you may know who the fastest is, but, for how long?

As soon as we spy the game on the App Store, we'll give it a shot and get back to you and fill in some of these holes. If anything, though, this seems like a good direction for a Sonic game -- you know, the whole running thing.

Isn't that Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes in the image?
Using past stages as endless levels? Probably.

This sounds like Sonic Temple Run, which really disappoints me. I love Sonic Jump and was hoping for something more akin to Rayman, which is my current favorite iOS game. I am still interested, but may pass if its only a Temple Run clone.

There have been sections similar to Temple Run in Sonic games long before the iPhone was released. The second stage in Sonic Adventure with the whale and especially Sonic and the Secret Rings on Wii.

I would love to see them offer both in the app, 3D AND 2D. Because, I would rather play a 2D version, but would also enjoy 3D every now and then (like the bonus stages in Sonic 2). Just hope they bring 2D eventually...

This could capture a sonic adventure vibe if done correctly. Some of those speed sections were tons of fun, and basically you just needed to watch for obstacles that would break your run. Add in some running boss battles, and this could be a stellar title...

I have no idea how I bought a Dreamcast once upon a time, but Sonic Adventure blew my mind as a kid. Still love that game.

It's very possible that Sega started Sonic Dash before Sonic Jump. A Doodle Jump type game is far easier to program in my opinion (although a simple endless runner is easy too). Plus, people will have certain expectations from playing earlier Sonic games, like the loops and springs boards and such. This is a genre Sonic is made for.

Another endless running game.... let's copy each other and make the app store boring with the same game genres....

But it's sonic! If anyone is going to be endlessly running, it should be him.

They just need to make a Rayman Jungle Run clone. I hate clones but cloning that game would be well worth it :o

Somewhere out there... Tails just lost his wings...

fingers crossed for something like sonic and the secret rings. that game was a little strange but quite good overall IMO, and would work well as the basis for a game like this
