We've been scratching out heads over this one all week, as none of us are really sure why it exists. Take Sonic the Hedgehog, a character that is best known for his ability to run really fast and think of the weirdest way you could implement him in a video game. If you're imagining a game where you don't run at all and instead just endlessly jump on platforms as you ascend to the sky, congratulations, you've got Sonic Jump [$2.99].

The game features structured level sets to play with as well as an endless "arcade" mode that can take place in the three included locales that Sonic can jump around in. Of course, it wouldn't be an iPhone game by a big publisher without an insane amount of IAP and consumable power-ups. Packs of rings, the in-game currency, are sold for anywhere between 99¢ and $28.99 and there's even a $20.99 "unlock everything" IAP option.

I just... I don't know. If you were going to make an endless game of any kind featuring Sonic, why a jumping game when there's so many better vertical jumpers like Doodle Jump [$0.99] or Mega Jump [Free]? With how popular the endless runner genre is these days, why wouldn't you put Sonic to the task of running instead of jumping? These are the kind of questions that keep me up at night. Either way, this game is safe to skip unless you're just crazy about Sonic. Save your money for Sonic CD [Free].

I'm having a lot of fun with this game actually.

I don't know why you don't like it.  I've been playing it for way too many hours and still want to continue.  I don't know why you threw the whole IAP out there either because there is basically no reason to ever do it.  You usually end up with rings to waste, not needing more.

Doesn't look too bad. May check it out. What's the best Sonic game on iOS?

    • Firetruck94

      Sonic cd

  • Arch Deluxe

It's not a mystery why it's a jumping game, it was developed for dumb phones before endless runners really took off. Anyway, I'm not bored yet of jumping games, and I look forward to trying it out.

  • MagusDiablo

To be really honest, I'm enjoying this game. Okay, this was supposed to be a Super Mario kind of game, because of all the jumping and stuff, but it's a competent game after all.

While I have definitely supported this game in the forums, I think my favorite part of the video was Eli's disgusted sigh in the last second. I actually laughed out loud. And Tatiana, the best Sonic game on iOS is Sonic CD, followed by Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing.

Endless games are stupid.  This game actually have levels that you can IDK... COMPLETE!!  For $2 this is a steal.

this came out way long before Doodle jump.... I remember playing this on some old nokia phone (what's that again?) of mine... gonna grab this for 2 reasons - nostalgia and it's freaking damn Sonic...

    Nice video guys. 🙂

You're right, this game was released a long time before doodle jump, it worked better in java tough

  • bazzaro

I'm going to agree with Timothy. Much better then doodle jump because you can actually complete something. Besides that I am having a great time with it and as said before the IAP is completely optional and doesn't hinder progress at all. I really like the artwork and the sonic theme. There still is a sense of speed since you have to race to the top as fast as possible to get a high grade. I would recommend.

I'm loving Sonic Jump. It was a great game back in 2007 way before Doodle Jump and all that crap came out and it still is 🙂

I personally prefer it when these games have an actual goal to them and aren't as endless as they are mindless - it bores me out quickly. In Sonic Jump, I have something to fight for that makes me coming back for more and that's what I value in a game.

    • classicrockme

Doodle jump is crap? Ok you can leave now...

      • http://twitter.com/klouud Timothy Polumbo

Sorry buddy.  Games like doodle jump keep me entertained for about 2 minutes and then I delete them.  I know I'm not in the minority.  Games like doodle jump may climb the charts well --- probably because they are free.

    • classicrockme

Endless games appeal to people who like competing for the highest scores. Maybe you just aren't that type of gamer.

This reflects what I said.  I hate endless games... they are pointless.  I need goals, changes of scenery, variety, and a game that is actually fun.  This is the only "endless" game that is worth its weight in anything.

Honestly I wouldn't even call this an endless game - BECAUSE YOU CAN COMPLETE STUFF!

bottom line is, this is a fun game that is hard to put down -- and @ $2 its a no brainer.  By far one of the best pick up n' play games I have ever invested in.

      BUY IT!

  • KevinLlama

This game exists because it is a port. From old phones before touch interfaces. Sega loves milking their old games. Look at all the ports the release on ios. This is just another attempt for them to make money on older titles.

  • Acidbottle

Doodle jump remains the most boring game I ever bought, I just don't get the appeal whatsoever .. much better stuff out there on the AppStore but folk seem to be too lazy to find them.

The derisory comments from TA are justified I think, crap like this sells and this is the kinda junk that will flood the AppStore forever sigh.

  • Fabiano Morais

Lots of love towards Sonic on this comments section, I'm glad. 🙂

    I'll try this one later.
