Earlier this month I convened with the panel of judges in Marseille, France that made up the International Mobile Gaming Awards to go through the over 500 games submitted. After a day of some incredibly intense (and incredibly jet lagged) judging, we had our list of finalists which were just recently revealed. They forgot to nominate "Death Rally" to the reward "taking their customers for suckers".

Glad to have paid 5$ for a game that is now a freemium...

    • http://toucharcade.com Eli Hodapp

If you paid $4.99 for it, that means you bought it within a month of its initial release. Since then, you've gotten nine major updates and online multiplayer for free. Additionally, all the single player content, which was the only thing that was available when you got it, still exists as it was. I'm not sure how you can complain with the sheer amount of support the game has gotten since you first bought it for five bucks, just because it now has some optional IAP. *shrug*

      • mr.damien

You can try to argue whatever you want to justify this. The only thing I see is that I paid 5$ for something which is free for everyone now. I don't care about your theory.

      • http://toucharcade.com Eli Hodapp

It's not a theory, it's rational thinking. Death Rally as you bought it, still exists. In fact, for your initial purchase, you've gotten tons more than you even originally bargained for when you decided the game was worth your money and you originally downloaded it.

*sigh* iOS gamer entitlement truly is the worst.

" In fact, for your initial purchase, you've gotten tons more than you even originally bargained for when you decided the game was worth your money and you originally downloaded it."
And it doesn't change the fact that the others got it for FREE.
You are not rational at all. How much they paid you for trying to justify the unjustifiable...

"*sigh* iOS gamer entitlement truly is the worst."Sure, Android gamers pirating all the games instead of buying them are so better ...

Eli, you don't get his point at all. The fact that they updated multiple times was really nice from them, but still, some people today get the same game as he does for, nothing whereas he paid 5$ at that time for a game that had much less content. The point is "Why did I pay 5$ with less content for something that is now free with more content".

      • http://toucharcade.com Eli Hodapp

He paid $5 to play the game for a year before everyone else who got it for free.

This is like being angry that you paid $20 to see a new 3D movie on opening night that then aired on TV a year later. You saw that movie because you wanted to see it then, and the $20 ticket was worth it to you at the time. The solution to this "problem" is using your brain when buying things and buy things as-is based on the current value proposition at the time. If Death Rally wasn't worth $5 to him then, he shouldn't have bought it. What it's priced a year later is entirely irrelevant to that original purchasing decision.

How are we supposed to weigh in on four games that aren't even OUT yet?

  • http://twitter.com/touchgameplay TouchGamePlay

Did I get something wrong - How could Hector get nominate for "Casual Game"? Did those Judges even play at least one of those Games or was it more like "If you pay, you are in - doesn`t matter if it does fit into the categories".

Could you shed some light on that topic Eli since I`m currently really clueless how a mistake like that could have even happen if someone had actually played Hector for at least Once.

I was so sad we did not make it into the best sports game category with soctics :(

  • http://clickplow.com/ John

Yeah with exception to a few of those games i don't consider that to be a very good list :/

    • http://www.jshamblin.com J.Shamblin

Same here. Maybe some of the better games weren't submitted?

Sports Car Challenge looks great. Are there plans to add multiplayer gameplay?

What in the world is FunPark Friends doing here? Not a game - just like EA's POS Theme Park rip off --it's all about IAP to get anywhere. I love the people who defend these games with "oh, all you do is update it for a few minutes a day so you don't have to purchase anything".  That's not a game in my book -- that's about the equivalent of watering house plants every so often so they grow as they do: slowly

I've played Jetpack Joyride for 2 weeks like mad, but then suddenly a common (I know that from the forums) bug erased all my progress. I think that a game with such kind of gaming experience should not win.

Nominating games that are "coming soon" - in other, games that are not even OUT yet, is ridiculous. At least they waited 11 days (!) for Obama to be in office before they nominated him for a peace prize. I'm going to nominate the guy I just interviewed for my company to be employee of the year...

  • http://twitter.com/corleno Surakshith Battina

These nominee games are really bad.
Its like these guys just randomly chose these games.
Where is tinytower ? Junk Jack ? Wheres my water ? ? REAL RACING 2 ?????????
Other than S&S, Jetpack & Battleheart ,none of the others are great games.
