Engadget posts a hands on video of the iPhone 4 in action with ngmoco's new Eliminate: Gun Range game that supports the gyroscope.

As you can see in the video, the game is a gallery shooter but the use of the gyroscope can add more precision to the movements. (Sorry, not viewable on iPhone)

Not entirely well shown in the video is the fact that you can also move the phone in 3d space to change your aim. While some of the same gameplay can be reproduced with the accelerometers, the gyroscope adds more precision and also allows you to, for example, translate the device in 3d space. Rotating your body to the left, for example, will shift your aim accordingly.

Just bought this. It's f-cking ASTOUNDING! The possibilities for the gyroscope are endless. In this game it works flawlessly. Anyone with a 4 should get it, poste haste.

Have to agree, it does work very well. Its strange at first, I kept going the wrong way, you have to bare in mind that you are moving the phone through space, not just tilting it which is what you are inclined to do for the first few minutes. I'd like to see heavy gunner updated to use the gyro, it would be perfect for that game.

So, not having in iphone4 yet, I am just thinking that having a game where you have to physically move the phone around for aiming is annoying.
Lets say for example, I'm out for lunch in my van... sitting there listing to music and playing GunRange or other games where you have to tilt the phone all over the place...
Isnt tilting the screen all over (as seen in the brief video here) just annoying when you want to keep the screen in view or keep your fingers in place for hitting virtual buttons... or... ?
Titling left and right for driving games is one thing, because you can keep the veiw of your whole screen in view, but you start doing thing like tilting it up and down (back and forth) and now your hands/fingers are stretching awkwardly, you have to look at the screen on an angle, etc....
Am I the only one that thinks this will be hard (or just annoying) to use?

This game is the most fantastic game for the gyroscope and it plays very naturally. I hope a virtual cop style game utilizes these new capabilities, as well as a dogfighting game similar to FAST or something like the star wars shooters. Awesome stuff

I'd actually just watched the vid at the engadget site before coming here; if it works on my iPad, I presume it should work on the iPhone? Perhaps update the entry with the working vid from engadget?

I wonder if this is effective at improving gameplay in fast paced fps? Movement would still be virtual stick by aiming for shooting would be done by tilting as in this Gun Range with firing done by virtual buttons. This could make simultaneous running, aiming, shooting along with the use of secondary fire options a lot easier. The control ratio would need to be scaled so it's not 1:1 as it is here, so that you don't need to be tilting the screen widely to aim, although I guess the advantage of IPS screens is that the wide viewing angle does really help here.

@Dave G - that video is misleading, he is having to keep the iphone infront of the camera to film it, in reality you move it around infront of you, always facing you. Imagine looking at the world through an empty picture frame, moving it around to see the surrounding area, thats what its like in use, not just pivoting the phone as the video shows.

That all looks really cool, but I'm not buying an iphone 4 untill the proximity issues are fixed and that version of IOS is jailbroken.. so I have a couple months to wait... SO, in the meantime I downloaded eliminate gun range-free on my 3G (NON S) and tried it out just to see .. it actually controls alot better then having to move the phone all around the place in the fact that you would fire with your left thumb and move the weapon by moving your right thumb around (anywhere on screen) its very accurate and I havent missed a target yet (on the 3rd weapon)

just thought I'd say that it does in fact work on the older versions (my IOS is only 3.0.0)

Wow have these idiots ever even seen a gun in real life??? The stats of the guns are WAAAAAY off. And a FAMAS with 25 bullets stuck to 3 shot burst fire???? WTF??? You end up with a single bullet left in the mag! Update the guns!
