Today is the day that all the wonderful things we heard about during the WWDC keynote regarding the future of the iPhone OS, now officially dubbed iOS 4, are available to everyone. This update is completely free, and only requires you to plug your device in to the computer you usually sync with then waiting for it to download and install in iTunes. There are over 100 new features in iOS 4 according to Apple, but so far my favorite two are folders and multitasking.

With folders, you can now have up to 2160 apps on your device, and multitasking now allows for apps like Pandora Radio [Free] to continue playing in the background. For a listing of the other features, take a peek at the Apple iOS 4 Software Update page.

One unfortunate thing to come out of this update is that first generation iPhone and iPod touch users are being left in the dust. If you have an older device, you will be stuck in 3.0 land, and only the third generation iPod touch, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 are capable of multitasking.

Before updating your device make sure you not only do one full sync to back it up, but you also check and make sure there aren't any issues reported with your favorite games running on iOS4. For instance, ngmoco just tweeted warning players of Eliminate [Free] and Touch Pets Dogs [Free] of potential performance issues while playing the game on iOS 4.

I've yet to encounter any serious issues in the games I regularly play, and many games and apps have had recent updates that have added iOS 4 compatibility. This is just something you should potentially be aware of before mashing that check for updates button in iTunes.

I don't view the exclusion of 1st gen iphone/IPT users as a shortcoming at this stage 3 yrs post initial introduction. Technology has to move forward without continually being constrained. This is hardware natural selection and survival of the fittest ...

    • hdgreen

i agree with you. I have an iPhone 3Gs and a first gen touch. I now use the touch to store all my apps and very occasionally play apps on it when i cant be bother re-syncing my phone. I'd have atleast liked folders and wallpapers on older generation products because im sure they dont lack the technology to handle those simple things.

      • http://www.secretexit.com Frand

Wallpapers consume extra memory, and the older devices have less of that to begin with.

If it was a $1000 laptop that was made obsolete I'd be pissed, but I can't complain about a $200 ipod.

Besides, just because it won't update doesn't mean it's useless. It will still do everything it does today, I just won't be able to get the best new apps (many of which wouldn't run on it anyway.) Besides devs will likely still be supporting 3.0 for some time to come-- after all the new iphones aren't even out yet, there will be new touches in the fall so a lot of 1st gen people are waiting for them, and ipad doesn't even run 4 yet.

Can anyone say what, if any, other games will have trouble on iOS4? The only other one I've heard of was Pro Zombie Soccer, which I'm still playing. I know they're updating it soon, so I can always wait.

    • Adams Immersive

I say: wait a bit and see. The new iOS 4 features are awesome, but I’ll let others be the guinea pigs!

Out of seventeen bazillion games/apps, SOME of them will fail spectacularly with any major OS update. Wait a week, and they’ll either be updated or we’ll at least have the warnings we need.

I wouldn’t be so worried if you could restore just ONE app’s data from backup. But you can’t. So I’m making extra backups and waiting until next week to jump on iOS 4.

I also never like to jump quickly on individual game updates, if I have a lot of progress stored (like Defender Chronicles). I wait a day or three just in case some data loss bug is discovered. That’s very rare, but why not protect myself?

BTW, in addition to using Time Machine, if you want to make an extra backup of your device in a certain state, Mac users can look in your home folder/Libary/Application Support/Mobile Sync.

Since installing iOS 4 a week ago Glyder 2 has been slow to load and crashes on entering a level. Dont know whether its because im running iOS 4 on a 3G or because of iOS 4, but yes, be warned

I like that the most important thing before updating is to ensure that Touch Pets works. Personally, I'm waiting for the jailbreak to be released before the update. Folders and multitasking don't interest me too much as I've had that for the last year. :)

Any early reports on OS 4 compatibility with older games (like never were updated beyond just basic OS 3 compatibility?

I recall in the jump from OS 2 -> OS 3, the biggest consistent issues in games seemed to be centered around the new sound drivers which made un-updated games often play haltingly unless you disabled sound. So I'm wondering if this OS 3 -> OS 4 jump will have a common thread.

Any rough estimations of when the iPad will be blessed with folders?

For us old 3G owners, this is a near total non-event. All the good stuff is 3GS only, even the springboard wallpapers is unavailable on a 3G. All we get are folders, which may be useful but look really ugly.

Roll on my iPhone 4 this Thursday, then I can finally put this old relic to rest once and for all.

Gotta disagree tbh. Folders have been a massive help. I thought they were ugly at first but im used to them now. I've gone from 9 pages of apps to four, and I've not even gone folder crazy. It's much easier to organise my stuff this way.

I just tried to download 4.0 on my 3g ipod touch 64gb ver. 3.13. I saw the thing saying 4.0 is available so I hit update and it says I already have the latest itunes 9.1.1 and that's it! Why is it not working? Is it not quite ready for download? A few minutes before that it said to check for new updates on June 28th. Then it changed to saying 4.0 is available and when I tried it, it said the above! Should I wait awhile and try again?????

Wait ok why so i installed the ios4 into the computer and now it's syncing to my ipod touch 3rd generation 8 gigabytes. However it's just stayed like that for an hour and says "Backing up ipod" and the loading screen hasn't moved. What do i do?

    • omg

for (slightly) faster backup, right click on idevice in itunes, reset warnings. right click again, and click backup, when the message box comes up:

      "your ipod contains diagnostic infomration..."

click "don't send", and unselect the do not ask again button.

the reason its slow its because everyone is upgrading the new ios4, backing up their idevices and uploading all their error reports, straining the error report servers.

This happened to me as well. My solution was to cancel the update when it finally timed out (if it's not timing out and asking if you want to continue, that's a problem I don't know how to fix), and then right click the iPhone and manually make a new backup first before trying to install the update again. It hung on me the same as before, and eventually timed out trying to make the backup, but then I installed anyway and restored from the one I had manually made beforehand. I couldn't notice any missing data after iOS4 was installed doing it that way.

I LOVE this iOS4 the folders are very handy. Now i don't have 6 pages anymore :D. And the wallpaper feature is Awesome. The multitasking will probably become handy later when apps will support it. And there are new Equalizers and the ability to edit Every playlist always. But what are all the 100 new features???

    • omg
      • SstakK

Thanks but still 70+ to go :p

    • HawkEye

I'm a little annoyed they didn't put wallpaper support in for old 3Gs. I can understand multitasking, but not including wallpaper is absurd. To top it off I accidentally lost my current wallpaper testing it out to see how the new feature worked. I guess I must have somehow removed it from the phone, because now I have to track it down and copy it over again.

A question on multitasking - so at the moment all I get is more like a history of recent apps... it closes/reopens apps. Games/apps I've tried are not left in a state I left them. That's just because they don't support multitasking yet? That's kinda disappointing.

    • Tkun

Yeah, multitasking is a huge disappointment and a wasted opportunity. It looks like I have to still jailbreak it to get true multitasking, AND delete what's in that bar to avoid wasting memory. :/

    • HawkEye

The apps have to be updated to allow for save state switching (which is basically what Apple's implementation of multitasking is). Several already have been. More will likely flood in as the week goes on. Just give it a bit of time.

      • Matt

Yep, I see now with Plants vs. Zombies. Bit of a disappointment tbh!

I usually jump into these updates but it sounds like a good bunch of apps are having problems, plus I own a 2g touch so right now I don't really benefit from anything in this update, i'll hold out on a working 3.x for the time being :P

As stated above, Game Center is launching later in the year. It was only in the developers version for testing.

To speed up the installation of iOS4, I removed all of my games. I kept all of my productivity and social network/communications apps. I also removed all but one movie. The entire update from start to finish was about 25 minutes. Once I felt good about the OS installation, I went back to reinstall all the games, apps and movies. My goal was to make sure the OS installed fine with everything else following later.

Well I and my 1st gen iPod are now officially obsolete. Sad. Being an early adopter has lost its luster.
It's a strange situation because I can't use iOS4 unless I upgrade to a new device, yet if I want to upgrade I would surely want to get the 4th gen iPod which won't be available until autumn. So I can't run the latest OS, but I can't sensibly upgrade for several months. Feels like I'm stuck in limbo.

So the iPod Touch 2G doesn't get wallpaper or multitasking? This pisses me off! I would've stayed with 3.1.2 and my jailbreak, happily. Now, all I get is basically folders? That is BS! I'm angry now. I could've gotten folders with the jailbreak if I wanted to. Damnit this is stupid.

I have a 2nd Gen iPod Touch as well. And nope, it specifically says on the Apple website that the multitasking and wallpaper features on not supported the 2nd Gen devices.

FYI, after 7 hours, I've finally gotten iOS 4.0 installed on to my iPod. The extremely long installation time could be due to the fact that I have a lot of apps and movies installed on my iPod.

who needs such multitasking? there is no possibility to decide which app will be minimized and which closed. now on 3gs you open several games which support this new feature, minimized and there is no more ram left, so ios will start to close apps? and which app it will close, the one you dont want to stay minimized or the one that should run in background? so you forced to exit app and then go to tasbar and close it, in order to keep some free ram for important apps. so this realization of multitasking - sux.

of course this is not the problem if you use normal apps, but games... i hope there is possibility for developers of the games to include this feature as an option.

Another cool feature about the OS4 is the photo/video tagging function. Now if you take photos or videos with your iPhone, they will be tagged as a drop pin on the google map under Places, in your Photo app.

Aaargh I did the update, but all my information is lost! My logins, contacts, old messages, notes, everything! All empty apps!
I have an iPhone 3G. It first backed up everything, but it seems I can not restore the backup... I can only restore to Factory Settings, ITunes says.
Same for apps, I specifically told iTunes to save all "new" apps and their info, but iTunes only shows the basic apps.

I just don't have the guts to restore to factory settings, hoping that it will take the latest backup.
    Anyone a solution?

Dang, I saved a backup before updating, as when updating, the backup there always crashed, so then installed iOS4, to find that it had removed all of my apps (except the default ones) and had installed the ones which I hadn't had room for before. Now I've lost all my saves and had to go through my long list of apps to find which ones I'd had before.

I now have no incentive to carry on with Rogue Planet....

i think its kinda stupid that older devices are left out...and anyone notice how the went straight from 3.1.1.2 to 4.0? they left out a huge gap betwen those two numbers, so for the older devices, why doesnt apple continue with the 3's for the 1st gens? i think that would be a good idea!
