This morning Crescent Moon Games, creators of Ravensword: The Fallen King [$4.99] just pulled the curtain from their upcoming space-themed 3D / 2.5D platform game, Ultra Kid: Mystery of the Mutants.

Inspired by fantastic games like MegaMan, Kid Icarus, and Super Mario Galaxy and others, Ultra Kid will have players flying their rockets through space to land on different moons and planets, where they will find crazy creatures to fight and dark tunnels to explore.

With a mixture of both 2.5D and 3D platforming, you'll collect weapons and suit upgrades as you progress through the game to help you complete your main mission of saving the galaxy from Dr. Ridalin, who we've been assured is quite evil. Ultra Kid is still in development, and while details are vague right now, we expect to learn quite a bit more about the game in the upcoming weeks.

Looks amazing. Hope the controls are good

The controls are very good, and will probably get a little better before it's all done. Platformer controls have to be excellent.

    STUNNING!
    These screenshots are looking awesome!
And the devs know how to pull off some great 3D graphics.
This could be THE original uber-platformer the iPhone is still waiting for.
Love the classic face of the guy. Really nice artwork - a mix of old and new.

If Apple screws up and bans unity based games they are making a big mistake as maybe 1000 or more games use unity and a lot of those have been big sellers too.

    • Bosconian

Apple is a very arrogant company. So don't be surprised.

Gone are the days whn PpL used to Laugh @ the Unity splash screen & their games :)

    • Adams Immersive

Not to mention, Unity games don’t even have to show the logo: some great Unity games aren’t even widely known to use Unity at all. A truly great tool. And this looks like another great game made with it!

This game looks amazing. Reminds me of Jet Force Gemini, which is a really good thing.

If Apple rejects this, we will definitely welcome this on the jailbreak stores (Cydia or Rockapp). Hell, you can even charge an arm and leg to make up for not being on the AppStore.

Hopefully though, Apple won't be stupid and pass up on the opportunity to have this awesome game on their platform just because it was made in Unity.

    • Anyonymous

yeah i also immediately thought "jet force gemini" when i saw the first screenshot.

ow why is so much game art bland and conventional. these illustrators all look like they should be drawing snakes and bunnies on confectionery packets, or designing mascots for sugar coated breakfast cereal.

if you like games, you like end up looking at art. so people, learn about
what makes ART GOOD! art in games should make you gasp with awe. it should make you feel like you are traveling in alien worlds, not in a safeway supermarket.

now here's someone who should be designing games:

    http://www.emmanuelmalin.com/

    • http://www.squarezerostudio.com squarezero

Anybody who thinks that artist's work is original didn't read comics in the '90s.

      Harv,
Games aren't just art, they're also tech and commerce. The cartoony graphics render well and will be easy to see even on a small phone screen. If this is too kiddie for you, don't buy it, make your own game, but don't make unconstructive comments on a thread where the developers are cool enough to talk to us.

IF wanted art I would go to musem, if I wanted a story I would read a book, if I wanted to watch a movie I would watch a movie. IF I WANTED TO PLAY A GAME I WOULD... PLAY A GAME. GAMEPLAY IS KING!

      • Harv

        "GAMEPLAY IS KING"

mm yes i can't argue with that.

    • Cron

Honest question: How exactly would you design game with art like that? While yes it looks amazing in a frame on a wall, I don't think it would adapt very well to being animated.

    • http://www.mjonesgraphics.com Mark

Yes, very nice artist. I'd buy a game with that art in it just to be able to experience it. Very impressed. Good stuff.
      BUT.....
Most "iGames" need to appeal to the greatest audience. Ultra Kid's artwork fits the game well. Very appealing. I'm intrigued by the idea of using this artist's style within a game. I don't think this is the one to try it on.

Bit odd that it would even cross your mind really, it just seems you wanted to put the Ultra Kid's art "down". Smacks of Trollism (tm) ;) Gameplay is indeed King.

I am intrigued by the idea of an Art "heavy" App though.

You mean Daxter, right? Because no, it doesn't look better, or even as good, as Daxter. Have you played Daxter on PSP?

      • http://www.squarezerostudio.com squarezero

Daxter is a classic and one of the most important game on the PSP platform. It was made by one of the best studios in the business, with pretty much unlimited resources from Sony. The idea that a small team with a modest budget could do better is silly. Keep in mind, though, that a game could be worse than Daxter and still be very, very good.

Every single piece of the art in the game is made by me personally, so to be even compared to a game as well known as Daxter is quite a compliment.
For this game, I decided I wanted to do all of the art myself. (and its not nice to not have to pay anyone else, when I'm doing something I love doing)

This game looks amazing, I first though of Caster, another iPhone game inspired by the likes of Mega Man and other classic plaform shooters, but with much more vibrant looking environments.

These few screens shots look quite unlike anything I've seen on the idevice before. They are stunning, and the game looks very interesting. The iphone is lacking in solid platformers.

Forget the few haters, they can just save there money and make a diaper out of it to wear while they whine, while I enjoy this stellar looking game.

I can't imagine this game not being awesome.

It's neat that Kid Icarus is listed as an influence, not Metroid. I've always thought Kid Icarus was much better. It's probably in my top five favorite NES games of all time.
