Square Enix has released the first trailer for Final Fantasy for the iPhone. We reported in January that both Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy II will be coming to the iPhone, though a specific date has not been announced.

The new video shows some gameplay from the games which are said to be available "soon".

The font Square Enix use in their games for iPhone is UGLY. It feels so standard and mainstream. They should use their own font like in other consoles.

  • E says:

I've never played either of these two games before; in fact, I wasn't even born when they were made. Still, I've played enough games since then to know most gamers nowadays consider FF I and FF II to pale in comparison to later games. While I can't speak yea or nay in that sense b/c I've played neither, to have any kind of FF game on the iPhone/iPod touch platform is a definite treat unto itself! Kudos to Square Enix and I'm definitely looking forward to D/L.

While the FF series didn't really become great until FFIV (released for the SNES in some areas as FFII), the original games are still worthwhile if Square Enix makes some appropriate tweaks.

For example: in the original, if you choose to attack a single enemy with more than one party member and the enemy dies before the other party members have attacked it, the party members will defend rather than automatically target another enemy for attack, as is common in contemporary RPGs. It gets annoying pretty fast.

But again, if there are solid updates, the game should play well. And let's all hope Square Enix continues to pour resources into App Store development!

According to the Gamespot review of the PSP version (which is the source for the iPhone port), the combat system now reassigns attacks aimed at already-killed enemies.

      • Anonymous Cow says:

Yeah but that was pretty much the only strategic element in fights. Otherwise, it was just mindless grinding…

      • MellowFellow says:

That's not quite the way I remember it. If multiple characters attacked an enemy and it died with other attacks still in queue, they would just attack the blank spot were the enemy was. No defending.

(Sorry about the repeat, but my comment has been "awaiting moderation" for a few hours).

Really looking forward to this. I hope it runs smooth on a iPhone 3G. Unfortunately it feels like most 2D games on the iPhone/iPod doesn't :(

  • Appaholic says:

    The PartY was defeated.

  • Gavaphone says:

    Lord!!!!

  • John Hood says:

I only recently downloaded FF VII & VIII from PSN and can't wait to, finally, play these classic installments too!

  • Rob says:

I have been playing FF7 for months on my iPhone 3GS through psx4iphone – runs at pretty much full speed – these games (FF1 & FF2) will be cool to have on the iPhone – but it will not compare to playing the likes of FF7, FF8 & FF9, not a chance.

    • cranker says:

That's all opinion of course. Having played all the FF series, I would consider FFIII (US) the best followed closely by FFII (US) Those games, have great stories :)

      • I agree. :) Except I like FF II(US, IV originally) better than III, myself. :) Old school.

In fact, I'm hopeful that square will bring the DS update of IV to the iPhone. I guess if FFIII is in 3D on the iPhone (like the DS version) the chances will be pretty good. Hmm…

      • Stormchild says:

Agreed. I would place FFV between those two (i.e. FFVI, V, and IV being my favorites, in that order). It's unfortunate that it wasn't released outside of Japan. I knew all about it (a Japanese friend had it for SFC), but I didn't know any Japanese at the time.

I finally played through the Japanese GBA release a couple years ago. Would love to see all three of those classics make it to the iPhone as well.

That said, the original Final Fantasy was totally groundbreaking when it was first released. Dragon Quest (aka Dragon Warrior) had set the standard up until that point, and anyone who remembers that game will recall that Final Fantasy redefined the genre. While I enjoyed the more linear, story-driven games that came along later in the series, the ability to choose your own party members was interesting too, and added replay value as well. The "choose your party" approach was very successful in the Final Fantasy Legend series for Game Boy too.

  • Nathan says:

Hopefully Square consider bringing their other franchises like Kingdom Hearts to the iPhone (I'm sure they could come up with a decent control system).

    • gabe says:

Yeah, I kinda hope they'll release the Kingdom Hearts: Coded mobile game here in North America on the iPhone/iPod touch. It's not such a far-fetched idea tho, right? Since the iPhone IS a mobile phone.

  • araczynski says:

damn, can they make that video any smaller? i think i can almost make out the fact that its a japanese flavored rpg, but i'm not sure….

    (sarcasm on the latter)

  • cranker says:

I wonder if They have made modifications specifucally for the iphone or if they are direct ports from another system.

  • cranker says:

Now bring on Secret of Mana Multiplayer !!!!

  • giochi says:

Plese port Chrono Trigger. It would be awesome

  • SIlent Rocco says:

The trailer is a bad joke.
So, I still think, Square isn't serious with the iPhone market.

    • Lum the Invader says:

This is Square's most serious iPhone effort yet, but it's still just a simple port.

I wonder if a time will ever come when Square dedicate as much effort to the iPhone as they do to the DS.

      • texazzpete says:

Why should they really dedicate effort to the iPhone market, when half of you whine when the price goes above $1.99?

      • SIlent Rocco says:

Others keep high prices and succeed.
And especially Square wouldn't have to worry about pricing
since there are millions of fans just waiting for good stuff.

  • Thomas says:

I love Final Fantasy I (it's my second favorite ) but, annoYing font engine is annoYing. :p

Letters like g, y, p, q, and j are all going to look really strange.

  • MidianGTX says:

That text is tiny, even when viewing the images full size. I can deal with it looking slightly weird but damn it's small.

  • Pooploopdeluxe says:

Tried this Japanese crap years ago. The story is retarded and you have no control over you 'destiny'. Boring.

  • furuya says:

These are the perfect Final Fantasies for iPhone and iPod Touch. Unlike the others, mostly beginning with the very excellent IV, these two are short and can easily be played in short bursts. And PSP graphics with no UMD lag? Sign me up.

  • dumas1000 says:

We won't get fooled again….. Into buying this damn game. Face it, Square-Enix, it's over. Please, for the love of god, move on already. This game has been repackaged at least a dozen times. How many times can we play through a game that is Old, formulaic, arcaic, and completely lacking in innovation. this game is beyond a Relic. It's a dinasour. Every time SE pimps this thing out again, it's just another shameless moneygrab. Some people may applaud this release, but I find it insulting, to be honest.

  • jak56 says:

that looks surprisingly boring to me:(

  • Joel says:

    Nitido !!!

This is the beginning. Some day we'll have an original Final Fantasy for the iPhone.

Bring on FFIII (Japanese VI) and I'm sold.

  • Froggy12 says:

So will these be released as one app or two separate apps?

  • Vovin says:

Yeah, yeah… lots of people = lots of complains… but in the end: lots of customers. :D

  • Cranker says:

I'll buy it instantly :) No complaints. I always have my iphone with me so i want these games on it. I played these games on nintendo portables but never with this nice screen. I hope it will look nice on the ipad :)

  • gospel9 says:

Anyone noticed how there are no virtual sticks in the trailer?

And yeah… the trailer looks like it was made in Flash, in no longer than 30 minutes put together… pretty lame. Of course that's better than no trailer. Now they price this one right it's going to be a difficult buy for me.

  • godzilla says:

looks good. and the iphone game breaks even more ground… now we have grandtheft auto, cod (sort of) final fantasy, metal gear solid, and many more popular titles on the iphone. damn i wanna beta test this one rlly bad. can i sign up still?

  • Gordon says:
