Japanese publication Famitsu reveals that Namco will be bringing Taiko no Tatsujin to the iPhone and iPod Touch. The game has been called Taiko: Drum Master in the U.S. and is a rhythm/drumming game where players match up beats to on screen icons:

Symbols moving horizontally along a timeline show the player what to hit and when. Blue symbols indicate that the drum should be hit on the rim. Red symbols indicate that the face of the drum should be hit. The drum can be hit on the left and/or right side. The symbols can be either large or small. Large symbols indicate that the drum should be struck on both sides simultaneously , and small symbols indicate that the drum should be hit on either side. A large blue symbol thus means that the left and right rim should be hit at the same time.

According to the article, the iPhone version will have online/twitter support as well as multiple levels of difficulty. Here is a screenshot of the Japanese version:

The series has previously been ported to the Nintendo DS, PSP and Wii platforms, amongst others. The arcade version came with a physical drum and sticks to play with, while the DS and Wii versions had natural adaptations to the platform. The iPhone version will, of course, use fingers for the drumming. Here's a video of the game in action from the PS2 version:

The game is expected in March of this year.

Since I've always been a fan of the series, I'll be picking it up. I just hope Namco doesn't charge an arm and a leg for DLC songs (the typical Taiko game has 20-odd songs, this one will have 5 initially).

As for the gameplay it might better emulate the arcade version, or at least with the iPhone it is possible if Namco decides to. If you used the touch controls option on the DS versions the inputs were simplified a bit due to multi-touch not being possible. Here, the left / right drum face and rim inputs are much more feasible.

Will be interesting to see what music will be used for the five tracks. In Japan "Sakuranbo" by Ai Otsuka is certain, as are other Japanese artists songs. But when it gets over here to the West, I wonder if any Japanese pop music will be used and if not what will replace it. Better not all be public owned songs.

Why do all Japanese games have to use the most annoying female whiney voices they can find... my god... I'd have to mute it just for that.

  • The Theory

I'll just echo everyone else... JAPANESE TRACKS, mmmk?
Localized music would make this go from a must-purchase to never purchase.

    • Bdragonst

Yeah just like rock band or guitar hero in japan.. They have to localize it with japanese music to make a good profit in japan.. lol.. Basically this game is going to be released for Japanese iphones and Japanese speaking people who live in USA(like me).. or people who simply love japanese music..developed by japanese company

I am more a fan of Pop 'n Music and Dance Dance Revolution but I'll buy Taiko, if there are many japanese Songs!

Western Pop Music does not fit in Music Games I think!!

Can't we all get along? Toss in some american and japanese songs ala DDR. I have a japanese and english version of Taiko for the PS2. Too odd to play taiko drums with american songs but it's doable.

    This is a great game!
I have it for my DS (japanese version) and it's really good.

Difficulty levels go from pretty easy to insanely difficult. Plus you can dress up your drum with a whole lot of different clcothes.

    Really good game.

    What a coincidence!

I just played this game in my local arcade, it is really fun!
I live here in Japan so I am definitely going to get this game.

Hopefully they will have a nice range of music and some functional controls.

Oh my gosh, I loved this game. I hope they have Dragon Spirit Medley in it, it's my favourite out of all the all the songs I've played in this game.

Please Namco, keep Japanese tracks! I also like the classical music, but I guess they are not in dange. Other than that, cool! I really like this game!
