Hands on Gameplay Video of 'Driver'
posted by arn on November 28th, 2009 4:54 PM EST in Upcoming Games, iPhone games, iPod touch gamesThe remastered version of Driver was the game that we were most impressed with when we sat down with Gameloft last week. Gameloft has brought nearly everything from the original Driver to the iPhone, including the exact same physics and driving engine present in the PC original.
Here's a hands on gameplay video of Driver which is due in the coming weeks.
Check out our full preview of the game.

Looks pretty good…
Looks great. Appstore December is going to be extremely expensive
quid pro quo. Now you can spend what you saved in sales over the past week!
Hmm, I don't like the look of that steering, the player is constantly tapping the buttons to make adjustments all the time. It's like the steering is digital instead of analogue. I think having the handbrake just below the steering is going to cause problems too. Hopefully there are some other control options, including an auto-accelerate setting like in Real Racing.
I feel the same about the tapping the buttons. And it's true that Real Racing's got the perfect control system : auto-accelerate + easy analog steering. Love it.
How the hell does an iPhone developer not upload an iPhone friendly YouTube link. Now I have to go grab my computer. How annoying.
I suspect it will eventually work. It was recorded by TA, not the developer.
I suspect it has to go through Youtube's processing before it's viewable on the iPhone — I see that it works now that a few hours have passed. I've noticed this lag before. So let's stop whining and bitching about Touch Arcade who gives us all this good news for free, hmmmkay?
ya, there's no "iphone friendly" on or off switch for YouTube. All content is supposed to get encoded into iPhone friendly, but it can take some time.
arn
so, is this sped up? or is that guy just really nervous
Haha, yeah the guy has some really shaky hands!!
Anyways this game looks awesome!! I never played the pc version, so I'm looking forward to this!
I agree, non of the videos on touch arcade work on my phone.
9/10 times I view. This site it's on my phone.
That seems like hyperbole…
No it's true well maybe just for me. none of the vids are viewable on my iphone 3gs.
only time i can watch youtube vids is if i go to the you tube app that came with the phone.
Can i get anything form cydia for this?
It's an original PLAYSTATION game!
And one of the coolest, btw.
Driver was also on the PC at the same time as the Playstation 1
Just had a little chuckle to myself about 5 seconds into the video! When the guy playing is presented with the words;
LOAD SAVE GAME
CONTINUE
NEW GAME
You can feel the dilema in his long hesitation.. "Hmm do I screw over one of Gameloft's staff and wipe his 9 hour saved game.. or do I start a new one for the purpose of showing our Touch arcade viewers!"
Sod it, thinks he, delete then run!!
Color me impressed. This one was not on my list, until now…!
Kinda looks like GTA
I was thinking the graphics are a similar calibre to GTA3 on the PS2..
Did this come out before or after gta?
Driver was released in 1999, GTA III in 2001.
One of the things that made the original 'Driver' so great (and quite revolutionary for its time) was the damage model for the cars. While I see smoke and stuff in the video, it doesn't look like the car is taking damage for the most part. As strange as it sounds, this will play a HUGE factor into if I wind up buying this version or not.
Take a look at the full preview, it has a lot more info in it and including the info that there WILL be damage modeling in the final version and even a pic of some damage. Don't worry, it looks to be just as awesome as the PS/PC version.
Sweet! I'll check that out. Thanks for the info.
Also the hub caps would come off your car during powerslides, no other game has really done that and let you watch them roll down the road until they hit a wall or another car
Hope those kind of little features are kept in this port, we know the replay editor is removed
Oh yeah! Forgot all about the hubcaps!
I think driver really went down hill as a franchise once they decided to remove Tanner from his car. This, on the other hand, is the game that Driver was always meant to be.
completely true.
Driver 1 = Pure Awesome
Driver 2 = Meh…
Driver 3 = Suicide
Driver 4 = Dead before it even came out
Ok, now this looks promising as paradise! Loved Driver 1 :3
Finally! An opportunity to make out of the garage at the beginning of the game. Never did manage that on the PS1!
The hell is wrong with the players hands in the video?
I loved the original Driver, however, when I wasn't interested in running the story missions, I loved to fool around with No Damage mode. Will this release also feature the original codes that the PC version had, such a high suspension, infinite felony, infinite vehicle health, and infinite mass?
I had to skip the basement garage mission on the PC.
Quite difficult game, especially with touch controls instead of a decent gamepad.
I thought the original Driver was a top down game?
The original Driver might have been the first open-world 3-D game. I'm not completely certain, but I cannot think of anything before it. GTA 1 & 2 came before Driver, but those were top top down. Open world GTA didn't happen until after the release of the PS2. No, Driver was never top down.
Must have been a different game I played, I was sure it was Driver though. It was a top down free roam game where you drove a car the whole time, and I thought in the second one it was still top down but you could hop out and go in other cars? Maybe my friend got the game's name mixed up.
Maybe Body Harvest? That was 1998, a year earlier than Driver. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_Harvest
No, it was a 2D top down game, kinda like GTA 1 and 2.
I think you're forgetting a whole lot of games.
- Ultima Underworld (1992)
- The Elder Scrolls: Arena (1994)
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
To name but a few.
Loved the music from the psx-demo version. They changed it in the final version though. =(
I hope there's tilt steering and we're not forced to use the virtual d-pad. virtual d-pad games are brutal.
if some devs are reading this web… please PLEASE add steering like real racing, jet car stunts and so many others… that would make the difference btween a good game and a VERY good one!
What model iPhone or iPod Touch was used? It looks like an iPhone rather than an iPod Touch. If it was an iPhone 3G, than that looks very good for an open world game, I think better than Gangstar considering each of Driver's cities is bigger than the one in Gangstar. If it was an iPhone 3GS, it'd still be good but would bring concerns of how much it'll scale back on older devices, assuming they'll use scaling rather than just take the fps hit.
Seconded, please ad streering like Jet Car Stunts or Need For Speed (not like Real Racing, way too sensitive when trying to keep the car going straight)
It took both Luke and I to get the steering to work well with Jet Car Stunts – a lot of years experience went into that
A lot of devs will try to implement it and some will wonder how the hell we did it. It'll be interesting to see if anybody can match the tilt steering on Jet Car Stunts… But at least we proved that tilt steering is feasible and works very well
Looking forward to this. I always loved the ferocity of the police cars in the ps1 game… they came after you like a pack of wild dogs.
crazy fingers dude!
Well, loved this game on the PC. Played the crap out of it when I was much younger. Amazing I can play this on my phone in a couple of days
Who would've imagined that in 1999?
