Skater-nation-320x480Gameloft has released their much anticipated skateboarding game Skater Nation into the App Store this evening. We already had some brief hands on time with the game last week and really enjoyed what we saw of it.

Skater Nation is an open-world skateboarding game which really puts the other skateboarding titles available on the platform to shame when it comes to overall depth and complexity. Obviously inspired by the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series of games, Skater Nation runs inside of a game engine that was described as a "sibling" to the one used in Gangstar to have a completely open city with multiple environments with absolutely no loading time as you travel from place to place.

The city consists of ten highly skater-friendly locales that range from indoor factories to an outdoor skate park, and even a street that was inspired by Lombard Street in San Francisco and two main game modes, you can either freely skate around the city, or progress through a career mode.

Skater_Nation_EN_2

Unlockable equipment includes 10 skateboard decks, 10 trucks, and 10 wheel sets, each of which enhance your skater's stats. The game is controlled using a virtual joystick and two buttons which handle all the different moves your skater is capable of. Skater Nation also has a nice replay mode where you can rewind the last 3-4 minutes of gameplay to save replays of cool tricks, jumps, or combos you were able to pull off. These replays can then be uploaded to YouTube.

Early impressions are being collected in our forums.

description page says that NOVA is coming soon. It also says that GT is coming soon. GT is not coming soon. So I don't think that's worth anything.

This game looks a little Gangstar-ish. Even though it's a different genre, Gangstar what a bit of a disapointment to me. I didn't like the draw distance/pop-in/framerate dips in Gangstar. If system specs can't handle it, then Gameloft should just lay off on the whole 3-D open-world thing.

      i mean the same

Your sentiment is the price Gameloft pays for being a maverick. When dealing with 1st gen devices, that shortcoming was almost inevitable, although Firement invested the time to refine it. In a year, when the 1st gen device are population obsolete, this will no longer be a problem.

    • Hmar9333

Duhhh, it's the Gangstar engine. Looks like it's been refined a lot. Also, Gameloft have begun scaling there games now, so there will be a much longer draw distance on the newest generation of devices.

About time someone made on screen buttons that are just A and B, old school style, and not the words JUMP and GRIND (or attack) on a massive button.
Still kinda chunky looking buttons but its a start.

I loved tony hawks on my ngage, looking foward to this.

Yeah the joystick could use some tweaking.

Graphics are so poor that it feels like a 2D game. The tricks are rough and not fluid. The buttons on screens are so bad, you cant see where you are going and its super difficult to steer.

I am already sick and tired of bailing and watching the same animation over and over when hitting walls.

Runs slow on my 3G iPhone, the framerate is poor. If you liked the Tony hawk games, do not expect much from this...

Well, I absolutely love Tony Hawk Pro Skater so I think I'll like Skater Nation too :)
But there's any element in the game that involves accelerometer? I think it will be a bit hard controlling a skate or something like this by using the accelerometer...

You only use tilt controls when grinding, basically to keep your balance. Everything else is controlled by the virtual joystick and A & B buttons.

One major problem is this game doesn't let you play your own music! If I would have knew that I wouldn't have downloaded it. Still it's a solid game, the controls take a little getting use to...

second the resentment bout the music issue! i am not going to play this for more than 5 minutes with an ever repeating instrumental track in the background. not to mention paying 7 bucks for a game that i dont play longer than 5 minutes!

music is absolutely significant to me...

if you grind e.g. you'll have to use the accelerometer for balancing, which is, imo, a great implementation!
I didn't buy the game, though - I'm not a fan of skating (however, THPS2 was so much fun) :D

To me this is just another example of a game that doesn't belong on the iDevice. I'll take innovative 2D over craptacular 3D every single time.

    • SalsaMD

Do you actually own the game, or should we just pass over your remarks as uninformed?

some people just like complaining and whining. this game isnt bad. the steering leaves a little to be desired, but its actually not too hard to pull off some good tricks and ts definitely a lot of fun in small doses in free skate. I can say that much. not sure if i would have the patience to do the career. i'll give it a shot a bit later.
