'The Settlers' and 'Castle Frenzy' by Gameloft Coming This Month

As is the case with most Gameloft games, very little is known about these two games short of the contents of their trailers. Thankfully, there is quite a bit of gameplay shown in both of them so it's not very hard to get a feel for each game.

The Settlers – The last in a long line of Settlers games starting with the original that was released on the Amiga all the way back in 1993. The Settlers is a real time strategy simulation game that historically has had a fairly relaxed gameplay pace which should translate well to the iPhone. The amount of units moving on screen at once is fairly impressive, and with how few of the games there are of this genre on the App Store, The Settlers should easily stand out from the pack.

Castle Frenzy – Castle defense games have seen a remarkable amount of success on the App Store, from the numerous games with simple stick figures to highly detailed games like Knights Onrush that all share the same basic gameplay elements. Castle Frenzy seems to have the same array of defense upgrades and abilities seen in most similar games, with the most notable difference being its colorful 3D graphics. It's hard to say what if any effect this will have on gameplay, but from the trailer alone Castle Frenzy seems to be one of the coolest looking castle defense games if nothing else.

OMG, I LOVED the Settlers games, so this is very, very exciting for me. Thanks for this great news. ^_^

  • araczynski says:

holy moly, if castle frenzy plays like it looks, it'll own.

well, as long as they don't go crazy on price, i mean it does look extremely similar to knights onrush in gameplay.

  • Zc456 says:

Gameloft is havin' much fun with the iPhone SDK.

  • mrbass says:

Their Bailout Wars appeals to the got 5 mins pickup and play crowd but wasn't deep enough to hold my interest. Castle Frenzy definitely looks like something I'll pickup.

Settlers will easily surpass their crap "Rise of Empires" that's for sure. I can't remember why but Settlers wasn't that great on Nintendo DS and Anno 1507 or whatever year it is was much better. I wish I remembered the issues with Settlers though. Whatever they were I hope they flesh them out in the iphone version.

  • estyst says:

No way… The Settlers 4 for iPhone… am I dreaming or something? : DDD

    • estyst says:

(after seeing while trailer) aww… now we can only hope for The Settlers and The Settlers II for iPhone… I'll buy all of them :)

    • monkey says:

Man, I wish the graphics would be in the style of Settlers II rather than IV. The more clearly pixeled look had way more charme than the rendered look of III and IV.

      • estyst says:

I ment "wow, ANY settlers game for iphone" rather than "settlers iv in particular"… and actually I liked graphics in Serf City the most :)

  • Ravenblack says:

I'd love a Settlers portable. The DS one is a complete disaster. This one looks really sharp.

  • mek says:

    Gameloft is awesome, nuff said

    • Stormchild says:

I don't know about "awesome", but I certainly appreciate Gameloft a lot more when they actually acquire a license to produce an existing game, instead of just doing blatant ripoffs (which is unfortunately what they normally do).

Either way, though, the company has absolutely no imagination or creativity of its own.

      • Derik says:

I agree they do lots of "clones" but they do them very well and bring them to us for normally $4.99 and always have sales and price drops to $0.99! You want the name? You might have to pay for it! I'm surprised at the prices of the games on the iPhone/iPod Touch especially compared to those on the DS and I think Gameloft is one of the devs that will help keep quality games at an affordable price!

P.S. I was a lil disappointed with TV Show King ( and I got it while it was $4.99 :( )

  • TKO says:

I'm worried they're going to start with The Settlers II, III, IV, or something, and completely forget about the simple (and brilliant) Settlers I. That game was great. Don't know why they keep trying to make Settlers II on handhelds instead.

    • estyst says:

yup, The Settlers/Serf City is the best in the series, however it is most retro too – that's the main reason why it is not ported… The Settlers II is the most widely known in the series and the last one with "fixed roads and flags" – many people consider it the best ever hence DS port and "anniversary edition"… The Settlers III was actually quite good and The Settlers IV (which will be ported to iPhone) was like adding a final polish and some new features to The Settlers III while making storyline like 1/3 of The Settlers III…

    YES

I'm a HUGE Settlers fan, and while I'd prefer to see a port of the second version of the game (Settlers II was without doubt the best version), this is better than nothing :D )

First day buy for me. Ubisoft owes me this for the clusterfuck that was Settlers DS.

  • JC says:

Awesome! Settlers is just the game I've been looking for! Resource Gathering and Economy is a major element and not simplified like all the other RTS for iphone! I want warcraft 2 full on iphone… you listening Blizzard?

  • acidbottle says:

nice news on the settlers game!

  • eugekava says:

Castle frenzy looks like 3D knights onrush. I'd love to know how many levels there are. Hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg.

  • Poco says:

@TKO: What do you have against Settlers II? It was the same as S I in finer graphics. Settlers III+ were much worse than the first parts.

  • Jeff says:

man that castle game trailer makes me want a jrpg for iphone even more =/

  • Derik says:

OMG! I will pay $999.99 for Castle Frenzy.. ok, not really, but castle defense are my fav and right now IMO Knights Onrush is the best, but the dev refuses to fix issues that make the game feel buggy and claims that was the way the game was intended… whatev! I want this now!!

  • d1554573r says:

No f*** way!!! :O i still remember sleepless nights in front of my amiga 500 and settlers … 1st we had red alert now we got settlers i want warcraft now :)

  • blackHorse says:

It was fun in 1993, and quite ok in 2003. But no more, thank.

  • Septimus says:

Wish it was Settlers 1 (including the Amiga music, very atmospheric and not that annoying). But this will certainly do :)

  • ramon says:

Hey guys! The Settlers is out!
