rally master pro lense flare

Back in August we reported that FishLabs would be bringing the highly rated mobile title Rally Master Pro, which Pocket Gamer determined to be the best mobile game of 2008, to the iPhone and iPod touch.

The original mobile title has some of the best 3D graphics ever seen on a typical handset.  The iPhone version, as FishLabs indicates, takes things to a whole new level with 4x the poly count of the original and enhanced particle effects and dynamic lighting.

Depending on the track surface and weather, a variety of dust, spray, and even dirt particles will be generated for each individual tire. The various kinds of particles act quite differently. On dry, dusty tracks the car leaves a massive cloud of dust while racing through a forest on a rainy day you can literrally see the mud flying.
….
Thanks to the high-powered 3D chips (OpenGL graphics acceleration) in the iPhone, we can light the vehicle in a variety of ways, depending on the weather: with lots of light and shadows when it’s sunny, diffuse when the sky is overcast, and correspondingly dim in rain and storm.

The iPhone release will include 27 courses and weather effects for sun, rain, and snow as well as options for tilt or touch (analog or digital) controls.

FishLabs was kind enough to provide us with a pre-release build of the iPhone version of Rally Master Pro to play around with and share a glimpse with our readers.

See our brief gameplay video that shows early play across several different tracks.

[ Full HD version | Low Bandwidth version ]

The developers emphasis that what you see above is indeed a pre-release with unfinalized controls, physics, and sound.  As such, I'll refrain from critiquing the gameplay, but I can say that I've had a rather enjoyable time putting the game through its paces.  Some parts of the various courses really take me back to days of spending hours in front of Sega Rally on the Saturn (which, in case you've not personally had the pleasure, is a very good thing).

What I've seen so far puts a rather optimistic light on the likelihood that the iPhone version will indeed go well beyond the mobile title.

FishLabs indicates that Rally Master Pro will hit the App Store sometime this autumn.

Looks good but they really need to change the voice of the co-driver. He sounds too over the top. A scottish or european accent would be better suited to the game IMO.

No screen rotation when you tilt device to turn? I like that feature in Real Racing so much. Pleeeeese implement that! (or I won't buy it)

well, i think they will add the screen rotation feature in the final version, all their racing ipod games have this feature, they will add it here too.

the co-pilot voice is like that because FISHLABS is german so thet record themselves and they have german accent while speaking english.

Blake brings up Sega Rally, and that just causes me to wonder what the hell Sega is doing resting on their laurels and letting devs like FishLabs do what Sega should be doing.

Seriously...Sega is known for arcade racers, and yet...no Sega arcade racers on this platform. It's nuts.

Good job FishLabs for picking up the slack and doing a helluva good job at it (from what's in the vid).

    • Elsic1975a

Sega is doing the same thing they've been doing for the past few years: producing more tripe and lousy Sonic sequels. Gone are the days of Sega as a true innovator, creating amazing games such as Sega Rally, Rez, Gunvalkyrie, Samba de Amigo, Space Channel 5, Jet Grind Radio, Revenge of Shinobi, Seaman, Virtua Cop, etc. Now we're stuck with ports of their classic titles, poorly-made followups (House of the Dead 3/4, tho the recent Wii title is surprisingly good) and Sonic. Even then, we aren't seeing ports of many of these great games to the iPhone- Space Channel 5, Seaman (how cool would that be with the built-in mic?), Daytona, Rez, and so forth- that would be a great fit and might be ported almost directly without large development costs. Their current ports of Sonic and Golden Axe are mediocre at best, with control and slowdown issues. In the end, Sega simply does not innovate any longer, and fails to take chances. The Sega of old is dead.

      • spiffyone

Yakuza and Valkryia Chronicles are both quite good games. PSO for PSP was pretty good. So are most of their DS games. Sega is more than Sonic.

Sega is doing the same thing as every major console developer outside of EA; not trusting the appstore market enough to invest heavily in it. Nobody wants to create a game that would sell for $30-40 on the DS and PSP, only to have spoiled idevice owners whining about the price and demanding the game sell for $.99 and include multiple free content updates. Look at TTR 3. Everyone's crying over having to pay for DLC music that isn't free anywhere else.

As far as this game goes, while it looks great, I'm certainly led to believe that it will be a rally only game, and therefore, my ethusiasm is immidiately tempered. Dirt 2 does both off-road racing and rally racing and does them amazingly well. Rally racing just doesn't have much of a following the U.S. I tolerate time trial racing, when neccessary, but would much rather face actual opponents.

    • spiffyone

Except, of course, that ignores the fact that Sega was the first "big" company that showed that with proper investment for the target platform, and the right IP, one could, in fact, make a bundle (*points to Super Monkey Ball). Sega as well set the prices for the most part when they priced Monkey Ball at $10, which was a proven seller and continues to sell (it has never, to my knowledge, fallen off the charts for any significant amount of time).

You honestly think that this game from FishLabs is on the same level of investment as a PSP or DS game (especially considering the engine is their Abyss engine and they've used that for years now) or that Sega would have to invest a bundle to make a comparable game? Sega could do something comparable for the same "lower than DS or PSP costs" as well, priced it at $7 - 10 just as they did Monkey Ball and make a bundle. That they haven't speaks less to their supposed apathy toward the app store (false since they've gone on record as being ga-ga for it) but rather to their complete lack of direction as a company. What happened to the Sega of my youth?

Yeah, I don't get the lack of rally games on the iDevices either. They're perfect for anything with a steering wheel. Sega should've been all over this already, rather than shovelling out overpriced retro coin-op titles (which are badly suited to iControls.)

Good job that FishLabs is on the case anyway. I like what they've done so far. That this reminds the Touch Arcade crew of Sega Rally pleases me immensely. ..We just need someone to do a Colin McRae port now. :)

IMO, looks like a fantastic game. The environments look awesome, the effect like dust look very very good, the car looks amazing! This looks better then some games I played on my pc some years back and its running on a cell phone! Looks almost the same as need for speed 5 graphics wise, a game from 2000. Great job so far, cant wait to play it.

I have been waiting for a rally game since I got my first iPhone a year and a half ago! This game looks great but that co-driver (Troy, lol) is really annoying and doesn't read off proper rally turns. Hard right? wtf? How about right 3 or right 2 or whatever like they actually get read off so that way I can gauge the turns better. I would also love to see the screen tilt in turns and the option to actually start and stop the car instead of it always going and only having a brake pedal.
That being said, I love how well the environment and the game in general looks on the pre-release and I can't wait to see the final product! I'll definitely buy it on its release unless it's $9.99; then I'll wait until the price drops...I'm on a college budget :D

    • http://www.fishlabs.net Fishlabs

we did not use the proper rallye commands as not many people out there are familiar what 1-5 means.

regarding controls: you can set and customize pretty much everything you desire, from manual gas, tilt, touch analog/digital, left, right or two-handed steering. if someone is still unhappy then we can't help it ;-)

      tilt screen will be added.

Blah... even though its a rally game, we already have tons of racing. Imho, they should've ported their award winning Galaxy on Fire II or Deep. Heck, even that RPG they have would've been better than a rally game.

They can only get onto other ports once this is on my phone, and not before. In fact, I don't even want them sleeping until it's done. This is just too darned important. :D

Graphics look awesome but the controls look horrible.

The only racing game where tilt controls have worked well IMO is Need for Speed!

I think the reason NFS controls work so well is cause the steering is gradual. So if you barely tilt the iPhone the car goes straight, which means to don't have to correct for overtilting all the time...

    • spiffyone

The steering controls in Ferrari GT, Fastlane, etc., while tight, are plenty good. So too are the controls in many of the kart racers on the platform.

Here's a tip: you only need tilt a little. The fact that you point out that if you tilt a little NFS doesn't move (stays straight) tells me you might be tilting too much.

      • SicMX

Yeah, i probably am tilting too much but that's the problem with not having physical buttons. With physical buttons if i want the car to go straight i just lef go of the directional buttons, but on the iPhone i have to try and keep the device completetly level. This is why i think it's good that in Need for Speed the car goes quite straight even if you tilt it a few degrees.

I tried Real Racing a few times but couldn't get used to the steering cause i was always overcorrecting and had a hard time getting the car to go straight (this might also have to do with developers making racing games more realistic, making cars handle more like real cars, like in GTA IV)

    • TKO

Hmmm.. Have you tried Real Racing? The steering is *perfect* in that game. Great steering in 4x4 Jam too. And, most importantly, the steering is done very well in Powerboat Challenge. While that's a water racer, it was programmed by Fish Labs. So feel there's a good chance they'll get the this one right too IMHO.

Would be nice to have something that means I can leave Colin McRae and other such games on the PC behind. ..Would love to have some rallying on the go. :)

I agree, it would be cool if you could select from a variety of co-pilot voices. The idea of driving with Ron Burgundy as my navigator is terrifying. Also, horizon tilt really should get implemented, it works so well on other racing games, it's a great way to gauge how level you're holding your iDevice.

The game looks really good, and sharp and such, but I can't shake the feeling that the accelerometer way of controlling your car looks a bit iffy... Maybe that's just the accelerometer's fault, and not the game maker's, though.

The game looks really good, and sharp and such, but I can't shake the feeling that the accelerometer way of controlling your car looks a bit iffy... Maybe that's just the accelerometer's fault, and not the game maker's, though.

Every single video i've seen of this title, makes the game look rubbish... and i strongly suspect there's a very good reason for that...

The controls look hideous for a start

The engine note is horrible and sounds NOTHING like a rally car

But worse of all... WHY does the car decelerate when it ventures even a few inches from the center of the road... have the developers ever seen a rally car in action....

Everything adds up to game that look absolutely no fun to play

This is a big MISS for me

{shrugs} I'm gonna wait until I've tried it. With Powerboat challenge it was the lite version that got me to buy it (after becoming totally addicted.) :) I'm hoping there will be a lite version of this when it's released. (I hope that because, if there isn't, dammit .. it's a rally game. It's even odds I'd just buy it anyway.) :p

If there's a lite version, i'll be sure to try it it, and hope i'm forced to eat my words... but there's no-way i'm blind buying this on the strength of the videos

Destined to fail. I love rally racing... WRC etc.. but the iphone's floaty controls simply ruin all iphone racing game to date.

    • http://f1stockcars.com/ Ade

Not true - There's been some quality racers on iPhone... Firemints Real Racing actually puts a lot of the BIG home consoles racing games to shame

    • TKO

I gotta agree with Ade here: The iPhone doesn't necessarily equal floaty controls. Real Racing feels totally responsive. No reason this can't work well too. ..I'm just hoping the bad signs you mention of the video don't hold true for actually playing it. (Please please let this be a good rally game! ..we need one.) :)

I agree about the controls...but that simply could be someone playing the game that has no experience with it. I'm sure there is a fairly decent learning curve.

However, the graphic look outstanding (as do all Fishlabs games). Finally a game with PSP quality graphics. Get the controls right, along with the sound and this will be a winner!

Thanks Fishlabs!! ill definitely buy this! Great move removing Troy haha, it was my first thought too. I tend to agree with whats previously mentioned, that more accurate pace notes would be good. But i understand why it's being kept simple. Having said that, i wouldn't underestimate some realism, Real Racing has done great. The only thing that i think could be much better is the car sounds (assuming they havn't already been updated)... Would love to hear a more accurate growl/burble from the car, with some transmission whine, and turbo noises :) Even some fuel dump explosion noises from the exhaust would be rad - i know i might be dreaming.

    • TKO

Oh yeah! I love those spurts of flame from the exhaust! *Gotta* have those! (Those made me fall totally in love with Colin McRae 2.0 way back ..that and how much I could beat up the car.) :)
