screen1Independent developer Zach Gage recently posted a gameplay video for his block-dropping puzzler that is due in the App Store any moment now.

It's rare that we preview these block-drop/puzzlers, since they typically play better than they look -- but Unify looks pretty great already:

Instead of a single piece falling from the top of the screen to the bottom, two pieces move in from the sides towards the middle, simultaneously. The goal of the game is to make combinations of 4 or more of the same color, so that they disappear.

Once blocks disappear, all the blocks on top of them move in towards the center, giving you the opportunity for combos.

Gage had also sent in a video of a 3D audio concept game called "Face It" designed to be used with the iPhone 3GS's compass. He recommends you use headphones to listen to this video as it otherwise won't make sense.

No word on when Face It might make it to the store, but Unify is already well into the approval process.

Both of those look awesome. I don't know if Macbooks can support 3d audio but it seemed like it worked without headphones. Too bad I don't have a 3GS, because that seems like a nice, original and simple concept.

Unify looks great, and seems like just the type of game I had been waiting for recently. What happens when you get to level 40? Does the game stop or do keep going until you lose?

    • http://apps.stfj.net Zach Gage

when you beat level 40 you get to see the ending :)

... at least if you're in normal mode.
there are endless modes too, and those go on forever as the name implies.

3d audio works in any stereo audio environment, but it works best with headphones

thanks for your interest!! im excited people are excited

If Unify is .99 You got a buyer-Face it is one crazy concept-me like

  • Pau G

'Face it' looks like an awesome game to play while in a subway or park, quite possibly could make you seem entirely insane. In all seriousness, I wonder how that game would play if it used your iPod library for songs...

Both games look impressive, I'll definitely check both out when they arrive in the store.

Totally awesome looking. Can't wait for Unity, and Face It looks (sounds) very promising.

I don't get it - "It's rare that we preview these block-drop/puzzlers, since they typically play better than they look." Are you saying that you're more likely to preview something if it plays worse than it looks?

    • arn

I'm saying we are more likely to preview something that looks interesting. Puzzle games aren't usually that interesting to watch a video of.

Wow congratulations on making Unify. It looks challenging, fun, and the graphics/sounds are excellent. And at one dollar, this is a bargain!

Unify looks great and I wonder how much time went into it?
And where does the music come from, self-made?

I'd really like to know how this game evolved, how the idea came to the finishing of the game. It looks so Nintendo-quality except that the cuteness is even better .

    • http://apps.stfj.net Zach Gage

Thanks! A lot of time. it's been in development for 6 months actually. Not all of that was active programming time, but there were a lot of hurdles to get over. I've never made a serious game before, so there was a LOT to learn.
I actually will probably write something about it after it's been out since it was quite a process.

The music and sound effects were done by my friend Carlos Hernandez. He had never done stuff for a game either, although he kind of always dreamt about working on games. He has a band here:
      http://www.myspace.com/avalunaband

very different than the sounds in the game clearly
