Carmack: Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake Coming to iPhone

MTV.com had an interesting interview with id Software's John Carmack. Carmack discussed their plans for iPhone projects and revealed that they are working on bringing their classic games to the iPhone:
But literally before I came in on this interview, I was going around poking with some of our old titles. I’m really looking forward to bringing over an id classics line — start with “Wolfenstein 3D” and go through “Doom” and “Quake” and bring pretty much all of them over to the iPhone because I’m a really big booster of the platform. And it frustrates me to no end that here we are without product yet shipping in the iPhone. We’ve had a couple of thwarted attempts at different things. I’m frustrated about it and trying to do something about it. [laughs]
Carmack notes that they have Quake III already up and running on the iPhone.
Aside from these classic games, Carmack discusses their plans to bring Wolfenstein RPG to the iPhone though he admits its not a "designed-from-the-ground-up-for-the-iPhone game".
For that, they have another title that they are working on using some existing id assets and is described as "graphically impressive". No official release date just yet.

nice
I… might have lost my breath… This is definitely a megaton announcement in my book! I dunno about anyone else's book, but in my book, Quake 3 on iPhone means SOOOO much!
Woop de doo !!
Will this be before or after all Teh Awesome ID games he promised for Mac 18 months ago?
I would never get anything done if I could play Quake III Arena on the iPhone! The thought is amazing and scary. Productive days… gone : )
god i nearly crapped my pants when i read this. THIS GONE BE AWESOME
Ok, this retro I liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike!
Boom and quake 3: Arena are available for the iphone via jailbreaking.
i hope doom has multiplayer o_O would be awesome some rocket launcher deathmatches!
Wow —what an amazing effort —they will be the SECOND group to publish their OWN game to the iPhone —-what an accomplishment
“designed-from-the-ground-up-for-the-iPhone game” l-o-l
=)
of course they have quake 3 up and running. they just downloaded it from cydia
speaking with knowledge,
if Carmack is working on the iphone to do something "graphically impressive," we are in for a shocker
this story made my day, i can't wait for wolf3d on my phone!
Gaming on the iPhone just keeps getting better and better. The iPhone just jumped to no.1 in my wish list. If only I weren't tied to this contract I would have switched months ago… Anyway, I can still dream about it
I would or pissed if I was on the quake 3 porting team. You work hard and Carmack comes along and says: "We have quake 3 running on the iPhone." Even though the porter quake 3 is very impressive, no doubt Carmack's version will be much better, graphicly and control-wise. As for the "graphicly impressive" thing he has in store for us, it will probably blow out brains out.
@Jorge Blanco
You can simply buy an iPod Touch-it's cheaper, and has no service plan.
Cons: No camera or microphone (although a special external mic can be plugged in), as well as no calling or 3g.
Excellent news. Can't wait to play these.
ill believe it when i see it
Just hope the control doesn't suckzz ..
Michael nailed it. I'll believe it when I see it. Carmack made a lot of game promises to the Mac community years ago. So far, Quake Live is PC-only.
id is an awesome company. Very innovative. I hope they aren't yanking our chains on this one.
I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to carmack about 3D design and 3D Game engine design and some of the ideas and concepts he had were insane. Alot of people don't quite grasp that he is the Godfather of 3D gaming…. They think he programmed a game in 1985 that looked like NES and thats it. this man is a genius, his doom engine is beautiful, and I am looking forward to seeing what he can produce on a iphone.
No wonder my submission of Quake is still waiting for approval by Apple for AppStore. Guess Apple likes to play favorites when approving open source ports listed for free.
Lets hope you do better than a port and give it the full out iPhone hardware support it definitely needs. Either way, congrats on breaking into AppStore.

Carmack's experience will do a lot for the iPhone. I thought the price of Wolfenstein on the iPhone was a little steep, but I bought it anyway and *wow* it's good. Yeah, sure the title may be old, but even considering that ..its startup speed, the functionality of the UI, the slick-smooth visuals, and the really *controllable* game impressed me heaps. It's the first first-person game on the iPhone I've played where I wasn't tensed up ready to fight the over-sensitive controls.
He also had the balls not to clutter up the controls. No need to click to open or change weapons. Well thought out.
Can't wait for doom. The rest I can take or leave. ..hmmm. (segue..) Maybe someone should do Shogo. Yeah. That would be cool.
well, i bought wolfentein and the control works!
I tot, I wouldn't like it as I've only played the free demo on my pc. But, playing it on my iphone is pretty smooth and I just can't wait for Doom and Quake on my iphone!!
Drools…
