'1112 Episode 01' Interactive Adventure Now Available

posted November 25th, 2008 8:51 PM EST by arn in $7.99, Adventure, iPhone games, iPod touch games

Agharta Studio's interactive adventure 1112 Episode 01 [App Store] has just gone live on the App Store.

We previously highlighted this new game, which appears to be a very ambitious interactive adventure.

Take a journey to explore this intriguing mystery and discover the reasons behind his constant headaches and strange dreams. Meet a bunch of colorful characters, dive into bizarre situations until an unpredictable event occurs and turns everything upside down!

The game features hand drawn artwork for the scenes and hundreds of sound effects. Players can utilize the iPhone’s touch interface to interact with all visible objects (open, move, examine, etc…) and even multi-touch zoom and rotate certain 3D objects. The developer has been active in our forums and describes the game as installments of a TV show:

Think of it like a popular TV show instead (Lost for exemple) Each episode is a stand alone game starting with a "previously on 1112" and a recap of what happened Of course there will be improvement made in each episode (we already have tons of ideas) in the user interface of new way to do things…

An early gameplay video is provided, but the developer says a new and updated Trailer is in the works:

The game is on sale for an introductory price of $7.99 (normally $9.99).

This is intriguing. I have a question though, will we need to fork over $8-$10 for each episode? Or once you buy in, can you get additional episodes free or at a reduced price? And/or, how many episodes are there? Might you end up paying like $70 to play though to a conclusion?

Or does each episode conclude with a satisfying ending? I'm just curious as to what you're buying into with the first $10 bucks…

  • SalsaMD says:

    From the developer:

Each new episodes will takes 2 month full time of making (now that we have the technology with Ep01) for the team so no it won't be free, We still have to think about our sales strategy about it (I was thinking something like each other episode at 4.99 depending on what the first sell.

Think of it like a popular TV show instead (Lost for exemple) Each episode is a stand alone game starting with a "previously on 1112" and a recap of what happened Of course there will be improvement made in each episode (we already have tons of ideas) in the user interface of new way to do things…

at the end (6 episodes are planned) we'll have the largest adventure game ever made I think! (38 characters , hundreds of places , and about the same amount of text there are in lord of the ring lol… there are already 70 000 words in ep01!)

  • Steve says:

seems like this will be an expensive game series. Not sure who would fork over this kind of money. I'll stick to watching Lost seeing it's free.

  • Bloc party says:

+1 there Steve. Pretty stupid marketing ploy to compare something that costs $8 (this game) to something that is free (lost). I'll pass due to the high cost.

  • arn says:

I hate that this always degenerates into a pricing discussion. Games cost money to make. If you can't or won't pay $8, that's fine, but that doesn't mean that the games aren't worth that much.

There are a lot of crappy games out there for cheaper. I think it's a worse offense to pay $0.99 for a bad game than $8 for a good game. (note, I don't have a strong feeling on this particular game yet, as I'm still evaluating it)

  • Brian says:

The price is steep. I think a lot of people don't have problems paying a little bit extra than a few bucks for a higher level of gameplay and something more complete, but handing over $60 for a full game is simply greed. You're better off buying a copy of Hotel Dusk for the DS or a PS3 title.

A TV show is priced at about $3, not $8/10. I expect the market to dictate a drop in price, just like every other game.

  • Oliver says:

Regarding the "high cost" of paying for this game: Where is the "high cost"? I can't see it. But maybe it's because I paid 40 Euros for Hotel Dusk on the DS… Paying 5,99 Euros for this game seems to be a no-brainer.

I have more problems with going english-only ;) . 6,99 Euros for a german version would be ok (compared to Hotel Dusk again).

  • Guys calm down with the price, each episode can be considered as a game as a whole , the whole thing will take a year to be done anyway!
Also think that since the game is divided into episodes you are free to stop playing it and not buy every episode!

  • along123 says:

Yeah, some would like this kind of game and willing to pay for every new episode. If the game play and story are interesting enough. Heck, it might even create some kind of hardcore cult following. Promote it on social websites like friendster and there you go. Marketing through word of mouth might just make this game a big hit. You won't know until the game is out there. It might be a little slow in the beginning but who knows right?

Kudos to the dev for being daring in creating a new kind of genre for the iphone!

By the way, the guy looks just like johnny depp!!??

  • Bloc party says:

arn, mate people are always going to discuss price. If I think a game is over priced I am going to say it. Last time I checked we weren't all here to unquestioningly line the pockets of devs. Now, the reason I feel this is priced too high – no replay value, no indication of length of one episode.

To alexandre – All the best with the game.

So many threads collapsing into cost analysys.

Some things in life are more expensive than others. Just because you can get a Dell laptop for a fraction of the cost of a power-equivalent Macbook, doesn't mean more people will buy the Dell.

It's a question of taste, basic spending habits and, of course, quality.

Perhaps first thing we should all ask before criticising the price of anything should be "Is it lipstick on a pig?".

  • Fat Phil says:

damn that doesn't work. um, is it a pig on lipstick?

oh hell you get the idea :p

  • Destinite says:

Episodic content is the new thing. Look at Homestar Runner on the Wii – $10 for a 5-hour episode. I'd rather that than lose interest in the story and find I paid $60 and don't want to finish.

I downloaded it, and so far the gameplay feels Hotel Dusk-y, being able to examine stuff and move around. The whole "being able to do what you want" thing isn't really accurate, though. Touch the computer, he says "I don't have time to do that". Point at the chair, "I'd better not". Probably a game more for adventure gamers, like me.

  • Chad says:

Well, I am intrigued, but also ambivalent. I don't mind paying for games or apps. But I have a saturation point for buying technology demonstrations. So far, Real Soccer 09 was my best app store purchase. I've played it for hours on every level. If Gameloft comes out with another sports game, which I check for twice a week, I'm theirs for $7.99 or $9.99. But RS 09 has also put them on my radar screen asa dev, something that might be noteworthy to devs. Mazefinger, a fast app with surprising polish, has also done that with ngmoco. Both are complete games. Which is why, I am eagerly anticipating Hero of Sparta and Rolando. I probably won't hesitate to buy either. Kronk 2, however, will require more deliberation. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. Kronk is beautiful, richly detailed, and fun, but so short. If Kronk 2 lengthens the game experience (or provides some sort of Soul Caliber type one-on-one fight mode), I will be tempted. But the original Kronk felt like Lord of the Rings running out of film after Frodo leaves the Shire.

For what it's worth, I would have felt much different if Kronk was positioned as an short introduction to an epic game (and priced accordingly). In that situation, I would be eagerly anticipating Kronk 2 as much as the other titles.

That's remind me of a certain Mr. Threepwood…

  • Oliver says:

    Kronk = Kroll? :)

  • Alan says:

I'm happy to pay the price. From the reviews and trailer, it sure looks like I will be getting my money's worth. So far, so good. I like 1112 a lot!

  • Bacaramac says:

I personally would look at this as the Need for Speed games. Each one is based on racing, but different from the previous version. I don't think the dev is splitting the game into six small games as some are suggesting. What about Halo 1, 2, etc. What about Rock Band 1 and 2. Same thing in my opinion, but he is linking them together. Now look at movies, they do the same thing.

  • Nathan says:

Where is the boiler notice. Please post or email me at nathanalias@me.com

  • Noah says:

I'll pay premium price for the first episode. Then I'll play it… and then I'll decide if I want to spend another 5-8 bucks on the next ones.

No one complained when Noah Witherspoon made 250k making Trism. And last time I checked BeeJive IM is still going strong at 15 bucks a download.

Leave the developer alone. If he wants to charge 8 bucks, he can damn well charge that. You are under no obligation to buy anything.

If the price comes down, it comes down. If it sells well and stays up, then that's just how the market works.

Best of luck to the devs, as I'm sure I'll want to see the conclusion of the story.

  • Nathan says:

Boiler notice glitch… Started new game and found boiler notice where it wasn't before. Problem solved

  • Noah says:

Great game. Good music. Nice story.

    Horrible dialog.

One of the first things a character says is:

"You should stop abuse your medications."

    When it should be:

"You should stop abusing your medications."

Little language mistakes like that push this game down from 5 stars to 3 stars.

    Just saying.

  • SalsaMD says:

    @Noah

I suspect the dialog is formidable in the French version! ; )

Why, not simply take not of the grammar issues, contact the native French speaking developer and have him rectify them in update 1.1. You can then revise your rating up to 5 stars.

  • SalsaMD says:

    edit:

    ..take note…

  • TennisKinf says:

Even if the dialogue is a little questionable, I don't mind having to decipher simple grammar mistakes to play a seemingly great game. I'm planning on picking this up later tonight. Can't wait to really get into the story. Looks like such a polished iPhone game, probably one of the, if not the most, polished games on the iPhone yet, and I will happily pay $8 for that

  • nothing says:

This is a very nice game, but the first episode is a little disappointing. In fact, it took only around three hours to finish it. The main problem however is that you are not given too much information concerning the story. There are several moments, especially at the beginning, where you seem to be doing things without really being involved in any story line. Also, you get just some information about what is going on, but the mystery does not start unfolding until the very end of the episode.
In that moment, that is when you really feel for the first time that you are part of something strange, you are just left hanging.

I do think this is a very good game, but it probably has to be seen as a whole and not as a standalone episode. Since we are paying 8$ for just a small taste of the story, this first installment probably just falls short of the expectations.

  • Trylleklovn says:

perhaps you could clear out how to get the safe code then, cause I'm stuck.

  • wow 3h! nice ! without any advices?
Experienced adventure gamers finish the game in 5hours , most people will do it in 7h+ and it can last more if you take your time and read everything.

Still playing louis everyday's life was an important point to the start of the story, it gives consistency and credibility to his character and his surrounding before the weird things happens (but still there are tons of subtles weird things going on all along ep01…)

  • SalsaMD says:

    @Alexandre

Is the new youtube video almost completed?

  • i just finished it but I have trouble with encoding… in good quality:/
I'm going to up it tomorrow i think it's already 3:15 am here

  • Brian says:

Alexandre: When do you plan on improving the English in an update?

    I'll probably buy it then.

  • SalsaMD says:

    @Alexandre

if you need a beta tester to help with the English in future versions, I would be happy to accommodate as I know French as well.

  • Igor10k says:

hah! it was very nice to see russian words in a game! =) actually, it was very funny when I found that boiler notice is in russian. Too bad, that it's actually a notice for a slide rule http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_rule =)
btw, still can't understand what to do with the boiler )

    Trylleklovn,
check http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?threadid=1518 for tips, i got stuck there too !

Alexandre, i'm french but live in London, when i bought the game i did not get an option to buy the french version. Can i still download it and how?

  • Nathalie : met ton iphone en francais dans les options le language change automatiquement :)

  • Graham says:

Hey how do u open the safe??? I got the
Code but it won't let me turn the thing.

  • Charity says:

I just finished the game and I enjoyed it as far as adventure games go. It's nice to be able to play it on my iphone. I wish there would have been more possible interactions with characters or things, not just one chosen path, and it started to get good as soon as it ended. But overall I would give it 4 out of 5. My biggest issue is waiting for episode 2 to come out. When is it coming?

  • Spacedove says:

I just got this for my iphone and I can't get the boiler to work.

[Boiler] Left dial (black) on 4, right dial (white) on 2, switches left (0), right (I), left (0), left (0). Tap on light, it will be green.

Never works. Never turns green. I suspect there is a bug. Can someone help?

  • Mic says:

I think this game is nice as I like adventure games. However, the price is really too steep for such a short episode. And I agree, there is no replay value. The plot is not clear. Is this an independent episode or is this the introduction of a series? One episode of "Lost" is only $1.99 as compared to this game, $9.99?? And I agree with RUINER:

    QUOTE
The whole “being able to do what you want” thing isn’t really accurate, though. Touch the computer, he says “I don’t have time to do that”. Point at the chair, “I’d better not”.
    END QUOTE

That needs improvement. But still thanks the developers for all the hard work.

  • arlyn says:

wats the code? how do you open the safe?

  • flo says:

@arlyn: turn on the tap in the bathroom, then look in the mirror to see the code.

I really want the next episode :)

  • The whole “being able to do what you want” thing isn’t really accurate, though. Touch the computer, he says “I don’t have time to do that”
Yeah but a few hours later in the game , you can access the computer and read all sort of stupid spam on it ;)

  • losing my mind says:

please some one how can i turn on green the boiler light, I have the notice but doesnt work, I have the same problem than "Spacedove"

  • Helping says:

Boiler: left knob 4, right knob 2, all switches left except top right, press button.
