Virtual Villagers Coming to iPhone Soon
posted by arn on October 20th, 2008 3:44 PM EDT in Simulation, Upcoming GamesVivendi Games Mobile has submitted a port of their mobile game Virtual Villagers to the app store, which should be available shortly.
The teaser video intermixes gameplay video and rendered cut scenes but gives you the basic idea for the gameplay, which involves you exerting god-like influence on your villagers:
Pocketgamer.co.uk previously reviewed the mobile Java version of the game. The game starts with a bunch of castaways finding themselves on a desert island. You interact with villages through a disembodied hand:
At first your main goal is to simply set up shop and make sure everyone is fed and watered. You can pick up any villager you like, and by setting them down near an interactive object, such as a berry bush or water source, you can encourage them to try and use it. Cleverly if it's a resource, such as food, they'll continue to keep harvesting it – bring it back to the village – until you tell them to stop.
Apple has been quick with their App Store turnarounds, so we expect this one to show up quickly.

i wonder if it has elements like black and white, where you ultimately affect whether they are good villagers or bad ones….
or is it like sims
Awesome. I never got into The Sims much, even though I tried, but this looks great. Instead of a game where it seems like you play God, you actually play God.
I'm really starting to love continual play games on the iPhone. Loot Wars has had me hooked for that reason. It's not that exciting when you play it, but you have to keep checking on it. Im glad to see more iPhone games doing that.
Virtual Villagers is fun stuff, but with all three computer versions I've found that once you beat it there's not much incentive to play it again; if there were unlockables or enough variety in the gameplay, I would be willing to pay as much as $8 for it.
I'm going to withhold judgment until I see it, but if it's basically a bare-bones port gussied up for iPlay, it's probably not going to be worth more than $5.
I agree with NotYou – we need more games of this genre.
