Atari Releases ‘Missile Command’ for iPhone

On the heels of Super Breakout, Atari has released another classic revamp: Missile Command [App Store].
Defend the cities and don’t let the nukes take out your missile stations. Missile Command for the iPhone is a true evolution of Atari’s classic. For the first time ever, players use the multi-touch feature to launch multiple missiles simultaneously, creating a new experience for this beloved game. Chose to listen to your tunes while playing. Two player support.
Atari has updated the graphics and added multi-touch support to this classic game. The game is priced at $4.99 and is available in the App Store.

I’ve totally been waiting for this. The perfect game for the touch screen.

That actually looks pretty cool–I like the boats.
I imagine gameplay is much faster, since the old challenge of aiming, and getting to another target in time, would be nearly gone–leaving something akin to Whac-a-Mole!

I got this as soon as I saw it in the store.
It’s just like the original AND better.
Very well done.

This looks pretty good and, again, kudos to Atari for pricing it reasonably. I’d still like to see demos, though.

…all the screenshots are nearly exactly the same, except for the background…

I posted some *real* screens over at IpodTouchFans. There definitely are a few changes: the game has added interface elements, the cannons are smaller, and the effects in the itunes shots… look a bit better then in game IMO.

Taking good screens might be diffucult, but doctoring out interface elements and punching up effects is another thing entirely. The graphics aren’t bad at all… but what you see in iTunes isn’t what you’re getting in game.

Gah! Does anyone know what the “Your billing info has changed, please update it in iTunes” message is all about? I don’t seem to remember changing my billing info and why would it become inactive anyway? It’s really annoying as I obviously don’t have iTunes installed at work…

This is wicked cool. Sure hope they do ipod versions for all their vector games too. Would love Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Space Duel, Battlezone, Red Baron, Lunar Lander, Tempest. Centipede would also be nice. Yes, I’m an old dude. Long live the vintage arcade games!

@Biggles: That happened to me when my credit card expiration date came up, and I had to enter in the new one. Maybe that’s the case for you?

Is it just me or is Missile Command not as fun without the original control scheme? Using three buttons and a track ball made for very intense and challenging play; it’s hard to find an original cabinet but I know it keeps me there for a mess of quarters when I do. Newer versions I’ve played seems kinda slow and mindless.
Any die hard original missile command players that can recommend this version?

it’s a good game. The harder difficulty requires you to select the silo you are shooting from. In the end, it is still a rather simple game, of course.

Excellent version. MUST BUY.
How do you destroy an enemy green missle? When I explode my missles around them, all they do is move. Is this the tactic? Push them so that they don’t hit a city? btw can you destroy a spaceship?
Missles AWAY.
Bill.

Absolutely fantastic.. If Apple ever bundle a game with the iPod touch this should be it..
Bill - The green missile needs a direct hit, and the spaceships take a few missiles to destroy.
It loads pretty quickly so is a perfect game for quick plays and remembers where you left it (exactly).
Just wish I didn’t have to choose to pick game music or iPod music EVERY time!
Think I prefer the classic gameplay a little more over the enhanced version.. since the action is happening so fast you really don’t have time to stop and see how pretty it is.

I’m all about retro games, but I never liked Missile Command, really. I like the iPhone incarnation, however. I like Missile Command for the first time, here.

yeah, I agree. I will go on the record and say that this is the best version of Missile Command ever, because of the multi-touch. It just takes it to an entire level not possible before. Can’t wait to see what Atari does next with Missile Command. I would love to see a versus mode over wi-fi.
