‘Diablo’ for Mobile Announced at Blizzcon

Blizzcon is in its twelfth year now, and if you’re even remotely interested in Blizzard titles, attending a Blizzcon should be on our bucket list. Above all, it’s a celebration of Blizzard games and their many fans, but it’s also home to a ton of Blizzard announcements and esports championships. Every so often, one of those announcements pertains to mobile which… is exactly what happened today!

Moments ago Blizzard announced a new Diablo game for mobile, Diablo Immortal, which they’re saying is going to be a full-fledged action RPG. It’s developed with the help of NetEase, who is responsible for hits like Rules of Survival. The game will explore what happens in between the events of Diablo and Diablo II and is controlled with a set of virtual controls that look a lot like Arena of Valor: A virtual joystick on the left and a set of buttons for abilities on the right. Multiple classes are playabl including the Barbarian, Wizard, Monk, Necromancer, Demon Hunter, Crusader, and possibly more although that was all that was shown off.

Diablo as a series kicked off in 1996 as was one of the first PC games I really, really got into playing online. The games take place in the world of Sactuary, where players need to endlessly gear up to crawl through loads of different hack and slash-y dungeons until you ultimately kill Diablo himself. They’re really, really good and the new Switch version is also totally rad so it’s super cool to have a new game in the series.

Both Eric and Tasos are on the scene at Blizzcon, so expect more coverage on the game over the weekend. In the meantime, check out the game’s web site for more details.

Welp, I was totally wrong about interface issues being a problem.

Honestly, this looks like a straight mobile version of D3...same classes and a lot of the same art assets and locations in the gameplay trailer. I assume the only reason it isn't a straight mobile version of D3 is that they want the flexibility to tweak some skills to work better on mobile.

If they want this to succeed (or at least want me to play it) it needs to a) be a fully premium title and b) bring an improvement to the itemization compared to D3.

Netease is the co-developer Bliz is working with. Will not be premium.

Yeah it will be another korean shitty f2p crap.

Gaming is free to play now. Keep beating your head against the the wall but you're only going to get a headache and miss out on games you want to play while the rest of us enjoy.

I’m happy that Diablo is coming to mobile although I agree with Chris in that I would prefer a full upfront Diablo game without f2p elements.

On the other hand f2p does have certain advantages such as consistent updates that few premium titles are able to muster (of course there are exceptions) and I have more faith in something associated with Blizzard treating their customers right than something associated with Gameloft.

Looking forward to hearing more about the game.

My prediction / hope is that the base game will be premium and there will be story modules sold as IAPs.

I hope that that is the route Blizzard is taken but there are some FTP games that are playable without spending but most of the time the IAP items are b..sht I prefer to pay upfront for my games.

A month ago I was on your side.

But now I have Civ VI and Stardew Valley on my phone, both full PC-quality experiences with no IAPs, no mandatory internet connections, no paywalls. So the bar has been elevated. I would hope a studio as massive as Blizzard would be able to keep up.

Seem like Blizzard just sold out their fans. Very very disappointing.

Why,because Blizzard is releasing games on mobile? I am not such a fan off their games I played the Diablo on the 360 just because a lot of people had a lot of positive things to say about the franchise but it wasn’t my type of game. I really like to see the canceled Starcraft Ghost game on mobile that was almost finished to released on PS and Xbox the early screenshots looked fantastic. https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Freemium games don’t deliver game play an balancing that I find fun/rewarding. You either pay to win or suffer design and pacing explicitly meant to frustrate you into paying. Lose lose.
I love Diablo and would pay top dollar for a premium version. But if it is free, I simply have no interest in even trying it.

On watching the trailer a second time I see some interesting details. There are what look like 5 skill buttons and 2 potion buttons. So I guess it's not a *straight* port of D3.

Will be f2p and won't have MFI support, if so will be a waste!

    1. boydstr

I totally agree with you a controller makes the gameplay experience so much more enjoyable.🎮

  3. Duane Locsin

The iPad Pro 2018 is as powerful as the Xbox One S and definetaly more powerful than the Nintendo Switch!

So why is there a mobilized version of Diablo for mobile instead of a straight port of Diablo 3?

  4. boydstr

Check please....can’t wait too play this game😁🎮it’s a long time since I see such a promising game in the AppStore apparently there is still hope left for triple A games that could have a release in the AppStore, but I think that my trusty IPhone 6+ isn’t up for the job,but then again maybe they surprise me.

    F2P? Super disappointing 🙃
