Michael Brough’s 868-HACK ($7.99) is one of the very best roguelite games you can get on iOS. While the game’s visuals tend to divide people, it’s hard to argue against its creative, challenging, and endlessly-fun take on a genre that has no shortage of competition on the platform. Like many developers, Brough wanted to bring his games up to date with 64-bit compatibility so that they’ll survive the upcoming shift to iOS 11. He did that for 868-HACK back in April, making a few balance tweaks while he was at it. Apparently he couldn’t resist doing a bit more, and that’s good news for all of us.
868-HACK: Plan B is available as an IAP for just $2.99. It adds a new mode to the game called Plan B that offers some fun new rules. For example, you’ll now get to pick a class at the start of the game, determining your starting perks. Each play also gives you a random global rule, some beneficial, some not so much, that can change the experience in unpredictable ways. 868-HACK already felt like a new game every time I played it, but this adds even more fun to the mix. You can still play by the original rules whenever you like, and Plan B has its own scoreboard, so you don’t even have to worry about getting butter in the jam.
This update to 868-HACK also makes several more balance adjustments to certain progs, weakening some while strengthening others. One minor drawback is that some players are reporting speed issues after updating. I imagine Brough will be on that with another update before too long. Still, it’s not like this is a game that involves split-second timing, so you can still have some good times with the new update and expansion while you wait. Personally, I’m just thrilled to have some new content for a game that I thought was essentially over and done with from a development standpoint.
