We first took a look at Fugl, the upcoming project from the developer of the trippy musical flight game Melodive (Free), way back in December of 2014. The game has been in active development since, with developer Johan Gjestland posting numerous updates and videos of the game’s progress on social media and in our forums. This week at GDC I was able to sit down with a fairly complete version of Fugl, and it’s looking even more beautiful than ever. With an incredible voxel art style, nifty use of light and shadows, a blisteringly smooth frame rate, and massive randomly generated environments to fly around in, Fugl is one of the most unique and stunning games I’ve seen in a long time.
As mentioned in the title, Fugl is also coming to VR as well as Mac and PC, and I was able to check out a version of the game on Oculus Rift and let me just tell you… it was as insane as you’d imagine a game like this in virtual reality would be. You get a freaky sense of height as you’re soaring through the air, and you can feel a jolt of adrenaline as you just narrowly avoid hitting the terrain while swooping down and through narrow passages. It’s awesome! Fugl should be arriving sometime this summer and it can’t come soon enough for me.
