Pulling out all the stops, The TouchArcade Patreon just crossed 450 supporters and is closing in on the finish line. We just need another tiny boost to get us over the edge, and with the incredible support we’ve gotten so far I feel like hitting our goal isn’t a matter of if but a matter of when. Yesterday we fist pounded with Alex Okafor of One Man Left who shared how important TouchArcade was to his tiny studio, and today, we’re going even smaller and (potentially) more obscure in hearing from Justin Smith. You probably know him as the maniac behind Enviro-Bear 2010 ($1.99) and the game which seemingly took over every indie dev’s life that I know, Desert Golfing ($1.99) among others.
Anyway, here’s Justin-
Hello readers, my name is Justin Smith. I am the creator of Enviro-Bear 2010 and many other silly games. The TouchArcade forums were the town hall of crazytown that started the Enviro-Bear phenomenon. It takes a festering hotbed of weirdness to create a viral sensation and TouchArcade did that for my game. They even created a genre category just for Enviro-Bear. How innovative is that? Very innovative.
Without TouchArcade, I might be unemployed, washing dishes, or worse: working in the industry. TA was the butterfly in Africa flapping its wings that caused the ripple of air which set me in motion and gave me the motivation to make more games. Keep TouchArcade alive! No, not just alive, but as a kick ass palace of worship for the Second Era of mobile video games.
With all this talk of butterflies flapping their wings, this seems like the perfect opportunity to post the trailer for The Butterfly Effect which might really hammer home what it is that Justin is talking about here:
Basically, imagine TouchArcade as Kayleigh and developers/readers/fans of TouchArcade as Evan (Ashton Kutcher). Instead of going back in time and messing about with things, you can just support our Patreon instead. If you’re thinking, “Wait, that doesn’t make much sense," well, neither did Enviro-Bear 2010 and we saw how that turned out. (It turned out awesome.) So, yeah…

Thank you Jared, been staying up for this waiting! Fantastic game, can't wait for TAs review!
Yay!!!
How is it a pocket edition when it's only on the iPad? Where do I find big pockets like that?
pocket edition also means mobile edition, as in. you know. not your pc
No it doesn't.
Yes it does... Check what the word means.
No it doesn't
Does your ipad fit in your pocket?
Wow, the lack of knowledge is spread far and wide.
it does, actually
I can fit an iPad mini in the pocket of my cargo pants!!!!
i can actually fit ipad air on my gigantaur cargo pants
I can fit an iPad in the pocket of my Scott-E-vest.
Damn. I only have a mini. Oh well, i hope it comes to the iphone then.
My guess is, it works on the mini as well. So you're good to go. Also to the people hoping it's gonna come to the iPhone - it's most probably not. The interface is rather complicated to fit in such a small screen.
All those long lines of boxes could be made shorter and scrollable and the interface style could remain the same. It could also hide and only come up if you tap and hold in specific spots. Watching it be played gave me tons of ideas on how to make the interface work on a phone. That's probably because I always prefer gaming on my phone instead of my iPad.
Same here. Then I tried my iPhone but it was only iPad. So bad
Cat says yes so I'm in!
I'm still really disappointed this is iPad only :/
I'm disappointed because it's iOS 8 and above, and not iOS 7+ as stated initially...
Im on iOS 7 too but now considering iOS 8.4 is Jailbreakable this and Transistor are making me hesitate lol.
Looks great,, can't wait to play :D
Jnco's. The development team must wear Jnco's to fit these modern stylee beepers in their pockets.
HAHA awesome. I had a pair of those back in the day I could fit 5 Limp Bizkit cd's in my pocket... *shudder* it was a crazy time that I'm not proud of...
Congrats iPad users you can finally play this game I'm happy for you T_T .
I was just going to grab it, when I realized it requires iOS 8. I've been kind of avoiding iOS 8 on my ipad. Guess it's one more thing to edge me towards taking the plunge. Wonder why so many developers insist on only supporting the latest iOS when many users are still using iOS 7 or even 6? Moving to a new iOS is a hard decision, especially when you're happy with the one you're using. What makes it hard is that you can't go back. I'll have to give it some thought. On a funny note though, I'm in the bathroom reading this article. :))
Why are you avoiding iOS 8? It's better, more stable, and battery life improves with it. If your device supports it, why would you stick with the old OS? Also, even iOS 8.4 is now jailbreakable, so there is literally zero reason to stay on iOS7
Maybe I aught to, I've heard it's been greatly improved since 8.3. Every time I upgrade to a new iOS version my battery life has gotten shorter, it's led me to have a dread of upgrading. If it's true this isn't the case with 8, maybe I will go ahead and upgrade.
Ive been avoiding 8 cause im worried about the games that will be broken when i upgrade. But i do want dont starve
only some of them are broken, others are actually still fine. and most of them updated with a fix
but... dont go 8.4
Why do you say that?
latest update : no clue if its good or bad
ah I see. I did update cause I wanted apple music, which is AMAZING btw. Aside from Bioshock being broken I'm not aware of any other problems but tried to read up on it as much as possible so thought maybe you knew something I didn't...
im still holding back from apple music. not sure why
The update literally ruined the tagging on some users libraries, and as usual apple is more or less like tough shite. Just Google something like apple music hosed my itunes library. Of course these are isolated cases, but just highlights the reason why I always wait to do the most recent updates that Apple puts out.
same here. therefore im waiting
Hahaha didn't realize someone had the same issue as me, I was avoiding iOS8 as well, been staying in iOS7 but when I knew it had to be played on it I already upgraded it this morning in preparation for don't starve, best part of it is now I am taking dump in the bathroom and holding my iPad downloading don't starve :D
Every time I see a new game that requires the latest iOS I immediately think it's because Apple is trying to cut down on people who are Jailbroken, think there's some truth there?
More likely the app uses the newest APIs.
or maybe the game is made using the latest ios as a platform?
Yeah after thinking about it, I decided, what the heck and went ahead and upgraded. I'm downloading Don't Starve now. The main thing holding me back was how I lost battery time with 6 and 7, but every where I turn people say 8 has had better battery performance since 8.3. At least now I can enjoy having a current operating system again while it lasts. I have a feeling I'm not going to want to install 9 on any of my current devices when it rolls out.
'Pocket Edition'...but for iPad only? Those must be some huge pockets...
pocket edition usually means mobile. not actual pocket
No it doesn't, it should be mobile edition if it's mobile edition.
i would reply and point things out. but your name killed it
LOL just noticed his name as well
You tell him son!
iPhone for telephone, but iPad for games! Insta'ed :-)
Wanted to buy this so bad but guess what Apple won't allow me to because I don't own their newest devices
yes. shame on you for not having the latest device that allows them to have this kind of high-requirement game on idevices. shame
L to the O to the L. :)
You mean Witcher 3 won't run on a ten year old PC?
The ruffians!
This runs on devices that are 3 years old, such ss the iPad 4. I don't see how that's their "newest device".
judging by how apple "update" their device every year. it is
But what I'm saying is that this runs on 3+ year old hardware. If this only ran on an Air 2, I would be with you. But it runs on an iPad 3 up, that's pretty generous.
not sure about ipad 3. but ipad mini is equivalent of ipad 2. and ipad 3 to ipad air 1 isnt that much of an upgrade.
but... judging by how x-com plays on those devices. im gonna say... it might not be a good idea to play it on ipad 3. maybe its just scratching the bare minimum
also. someone already reported that it doesnt look pretty on ipad 3. lagging to hell. and all around just bad experience. it runs. yes. maybe just to appease people who complained about this kind of thing. but its not pretty
Yes, the iPad 2 and mini are almost equivalent hardware, with a few changes in the mini that beef it up a small amount.
As for the 3 to the air, that's not the case. There's a huge jump from the 3 to the 4, let alone to the air. Factoring in the memory jump and the boost to the CPU/GPU, it's insane.
I didn't jump on the 3 because it wasn't as beefy as it needed for the retina screen, but was still a slight improvement over the 2, but the 4 started a significant trend to increase performance. The air, and now the air 2, are impressive achievements to having a system that really zooms along.
Hard to get a good discussion going. People focus on one term used and incorporates hatred in their response or a quick backlash smart butt remark. Obviously I'm referring to an iPad that I bought brand new and nothing being wrong with it so why would I buy a new one just because they added a few features to it.
Omg this is too much fun.
If your a smart shopper you can buy a newer iPad for a steal. Sold my wife's ipad 2 for $185 and waited till Target had $75 off new models plus being a Target red card member I saved another $20 + So keep your devices in a case resell/ wait for sale and boom your upgraded, been doing this with iPhones as well for years.
^ was meant for Jay Gaming
I've heard about this game, but I'm not sure what all the hype is about it. Can anyone tell me why they enjoy the game, if they have played it before?
If you enjoy playing survival games then this is a great option for the iPad! Since there's nothing like in on the iPad. I played this on the PC before clocking over 200hours! It just draws you into it. It's an open world where you need to get resources to survive and in the first few tries you are probably gonna die, like real fast! But once you got the hang of things, it will give you a very strong sense of achievement that you were able to survive all the elements that could kill you. The one thing I like most about the game is apart from actually surviving the game there's so much to do, there's an intriguing back story to it created by the developers where you can find out through the "adventure mode" in the game and various sources from eg. the developers website. It ties in the characters and things that appear in the game nicely. The artistic style of the game is also one of a kind. Overall I believe the game throws you a rewarding challenge where you'll enjoy when you accomplished different things in it
Wow/ another premium game hits the app store
This won't run on my Motorola Razr?! I'm going to download it anyways and give it a 1 star review!
Please make this for ipad and iPhone 6 plus.
its for ipad
You mean this doesn't have Newton support? How absurd, oh the humanity!
So how is this a "Pocket Edition"?
Because an iPad will fit in your pocket if it is big enough I guess. For most people maybe it is more of a purse or messenger bag edition though.
i can fit my ipad on my pocket
Without sliding your junk to the side?
without sliding my junk to the side. you know. side pockets
or jacket pocket
or... khaki pocket? whatchamacallit
But the only pocket that counts is the one where you have to slide the junk...
how to get food? all i got were flowers and some berries....too less to survive :-)
I haven't played in a while, and when I did it was only for a bit. I remember killing animals and stuff. I think early on you can craft weapons maybe and definitely traps to catch rabbits. I am excited to get back in to it now that it will be more accessible than it is on my 10 pound laptop.
Make traps with twigs and grass, you'll also want to make a crockpot to cook better food using cut stone and charcoal!
I can put my iPad mini in a pocket in my backpack. There are more pockets to life than just those of your shorts.
Haha well put, i also carry mine around, sameway peeps carry books, or laptops or newspapers, poclet edition simply implys something you can carry on the go, not something that HAS to fit in your skinny jeans pocket lmao ✌🏼️
How dare you use reason on the internet?
That is abuse of web use right there mister!
Someone try this on the first gen IPad mini and tell
Me if it's playable lol
its not
I bought the game an hour after it was available.
I can't even play the game on my iPad and it was worth it. I love this game, worth the $5 just to support Klei.
at least when you finally buy a newer ipad. you'll have this great game waiting for you
iPhone only owners: Get over it!!! The next person who makes a comment about the Pocket Edition title needs to be tarred and feathered.
This is the third or fourth game that I got on PC that I wish I had gotten on mobile instead (the others being the Shadowrun games and probably another I'm forgetting). Not totally my type of game so I'm less inclined to sit down and play it on a computer but I could see tooling around with it on a plane or bus or whatever. In any case, very cool that it came to iOS!
