Tower Defense Classics ‘geoDefense’ and ‘geoDefense Swarm’ Getting Updated with Fixes and New Levels

TouchArcade Rating:

With new iOS releases regularly breaking older games, it’s always great to see when some classics get fixed, like the news of the possible Helsing’s Fire ($0.99) fixes. The next game up to get working again on modern devices? geoDefense ($1.99) from Critical Thought Games. iOS 8 caused this seminal tower defense game to not work properly on modern devices, so they’ve gone in and fixed the game, added compatibility with modern device resolutions, and introduced Game Center support. The update has been submitted to Apple, so with the upcoming holiday freeze at iTunes where app aprovals cease for about a week, this may not get to happen until 2015. Here’s another classic Touch Arcade off-screen iPhone video from 2009 showing off the game:

Fans of geoDefense Swarm ($1.99) will be happy to know that it’s next up on the list to get updated. Oh, and there’s new level packs in the works for both games! Considering that these games are important parts of the App Store’s early canon, and part of the reason that tower defense games are so popular still, it’s exciting to see both of these games get updated for people who still enjoy them, and for those interested in checking them out to do so. Also, because it’s somewhat related, geoSpark ($1.99), the collaboration between Critical Thought and Imangi before Temple Run (Free) went huge, does work on iOS 8 and it’s still a pretty cool game. It just needs Game Center support…

How do you backup the app? I transferred the purchase from my iPhone 6 via iTunes but does that mean I backed up the app and can always delete and reinstall it via the App Store?

If you backed it up to your computer, you can always reinstall it from there. The App Store may or may not (probably will not) keep your purchase for re-download.

Bless you Eli for posting this, I snagged it just in time. Yesterday was my birthday so I missed the post but this morning I was lucky enough to check the site. It runs like a gem for both SNES and NES. Has anyone tried running Genesis or GameBoy ROMS?

        !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

or you could just jailbreak instead of wasting $2 on something that is buggy and will never get updated

I don't mind jail breaking my iPad, but I prefer to keep my phone stock for the simple reason that I don't like my lifeblood device to have to "wait" for updates until a new jailbreak is released.

As it stands, these work nicely and allow us to have stock devices. Different strokes for different folks.

I've played with it a few hours, works perfectly so far. Using it with my Moga Rebel controller, just like original gaming. Love playing DKC and SMB3 on it.

Here is a photo of it in action.

This app rocks, with Dropbox, I don't even need a computer to download and play on my iPad! Thanks for the heads up! It is curious this one got booted while others still in the store....

      Jailbreak for life!

    8. anabolicMike

Nintendo would charge a but load for em. Do you have any idea how much money it would cost to beat that one level in battletoads if you had to pay for life or by a timer? The DS earnings would be nothing compared to the cost of that stinking hard speeder level lol

    9. MightyJabba

I'm glad I got it when I did. It works surprisingly well, and I love the idea of having the roms stored on DropBox. Makes things easier to manage and doesn't take up a lot of internal storage.

Thanks again to TechCrunch who reported on it with saying that the app team was away for the holiday and wouldn't catch it until it was too late. I really hate techcrunch now! Argh! At least they allowed Bitcoin applications back on :D

And it's actually a decent enough emulator! Glad I grabbed it.
