iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Preorders Top Four Million in 24 Hours

TouchArcade Rating:

As mentioned last week, preordering the new iPhone was pretty insane. It seemed obvious something crazy was happening, as historically ordering your new phone through the app had been pretty painless in the past. Not so this time, the app was beyond slammed, and judging by Twitter alone, I wasn’t the only one who was up until 4:00 AM desperately trying to get their preorder to go through.

Well, Apple just announced the reason for all that: When we were all hammering the Apple Store, Apple was taking over four million iPhone preorders. Even if all those preorders were for the 16GB iPhone 6 (which is very unlikely), Apple made $796,000,000 overnight, minimum.

Any way you slice it, that’s nuts. If anyone is still out there who wants to argue that developer support might not be there for the new phones because of a low install base… Well…

Is it possible to play in portrait mode or does it not allow the phone to rotate?

      1. Bryan

You can play portrait games, but your device won't fit in the clip when you do so.

Ahh. That's a bit of a killer for me I think, I'd be using it with a touch 5g and I'd want both options....

Shame I was getting quite excited about this.

Thanks for the nice review. The MadCatz C.T.R.L.i is supposedly being released soon also, and seems pretty equivalent to this. Wonder how they'll compare.

      1. Jared Nelson

Based on my experience with it at E3, the CTRLi wins in terms of "quality feel" but its iPhone holding arm thingy is actually a separate piece to the controller, and is kind of a pain in the ass to attach and use compared to the Rebel's super easy swing out arm. I'm very curious how they'll compare too, the CTRLi was the one I was most excited for.

        1. bilboad

That makes me more inclined to wait then. My iOS gaming is almost exclusively on my iPad, so the iPhone clip isn't that big a deal to me. Though I could imagine that changing when I upgrade from my 4S to an iPhone 6. Hmm, decisions...

Any inside info on when the ctlri will actually come out? Been looking forward to it since your test vid.

Word of warning guys: I've tested this controller pretty thoroughly, along with the Stratus, and there are MAJOR issues with both on iOS 8.

Basically, Bluetooth MFi controllers on iOS 8 lag and disconnect constantly when running many - perhaps most - games. I confirmed this with several other people, and it affects every wireless controller, presumably including the upcoming CTRLi.

Wired controllers aren't affected, and neither are devices running iOS7

Moga's website still lists it as a "pre-order". When will it see widespread release? E.g. Apple Store, Amazon, etc.

      1. Jared Nelson

It was supposed to be today, I'll see if I can find out what the deal is.

        1. JosephWelke

Have you managed to find out anything? Enquiring minds want to know!

        2. TechUser2011

As of today, September 18, the Moga website says "backordered - ships within 4 weeks." Also, it isn't available on the Apple Store website; I searched under the "Toys and Hobbies" section.

      2. JosephWelke

        I was wondering that myself.

Will an otter boxed phone fit into the arm?

      1. Jared Nelson

I haven't personally tried it, but it should! That arm thing opens super wide.

        1. Kevin MacLeod

          Hey,
Just curious - have you tested this on iOS 8 at all? I'm running into frequent lags and disconnects on iOS 8 devices, but not on iOS 7.

    5. Mel Gross

While $80 is still expensive for a standard controller, the prices are coming down. I like my Stratus, tiny as it is.

    6. Mike Chandler

Problem here is availability. Website says pre-order and anyway there only interested in US people no intl shipping. Amazon didn't know anything about it, it's not on the Apple Store websites.
      Good start !

    7. bear-man

Is the arm adjustable? Getting this if it can hold iPhone/iPod 4.

      1. __BIOHAZARD___

It will fit...but it will not work. MFi controllers like this only work with devices with a lightning connector... Aka. Iphone/iPod 5 and newer.

So I guess I'm just $80 away from finally playing GTA SA on my ipad. I refuse to play that with touch controls.

    9. Bradley Groot

I have a Moga Pro for my android phone and desperately hope this takes off on iOS now that you guys have big phones.

I wish we would get 3ds and PS Vita quality games on mobile, the phones definitely have the power but nobody designs games for controller first. Even the supported games are typically much simpler than they ought to be to appease touch users.

I actually use it as a stand all the time, say to watch movies on my phone in bed, lay on my back with my head on a pillow and juat rest it on my chest, lol. It makes a great phone stand on uneven surfaces.

80 dollars is a lot, but once you have it you'll appreciate it. It'll be supported for years, the build is sturdy(I'm pretty rough with mine). Just need that installed userbase so we can get more games. I wish EA supported it on their sports games.

I picked up this controller at an Apple store in NC. I got the last on the rack, but maybe there were more in the back. Like Jared mentioned, the swing arm is awesome and fits iPhones with any cases (that is a big benefit to me since I don't want to have to remove the case to attach the controller). I think the feel is awesome and only the most hardcore would notice a significant difference between this and a wired xbox controller (no batteries so the weight is more comparable).

Function is great, games are still fairly limited and functionality differs from game to game. In Call of Duty Strike Team, the controller does not control the menu screens, but in other apps, it does. Even with many of my current favorites not being MFI enabled, the games I play that can utilize this controller tend to be meatier, longer playing experiences (Bioshock, Call of Duty Strike Team, GTA: SA, and Oceanhorn).

Really is awesome the have a mini console and high-def display option with this controller and an iPad or iPhone 6 Plus.

price is ridiculous. it needs to be $30. no ifs ands or buts. if you can get next gen console controllers for around that price, a fucking ipad controller HAS to be around there too.

    12. Jostein

      When does the app come?
