Valve’s ‘Portal’ Officially Coming to Nvidia Shield and Likely Other Android Platforms, an iOS Version Seems Not as Likely

TouchArcade Rating:

Valve’s 2007 masterpiece Portal is officially arriving for the Nvidia Shield handheld gaming device, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced at the GPU Technology Conference that’s currently taking place in San Jose. The port comes with the blessing of Valve, with Valve’s Doug Lombardi stating that “Our companies have a strong history working together and we’re looking forward to Portal‘s arrival on Shield." I mention that this port comes with Valve’s blessing because longtime TA readers might recall that an unofficial port of Portal that was built in Unity was blowing our minds way back in July of 2009. That initial demo video left a lot of people skeptical that the whole thing wasn’t just some elaborate hoax, but just a few days later we actually received a build of the unofficial Portal port which proved it wasn’t just smoke and mirrors. Here’s some video of us playing through an early version of that port.

Sadly Valve put the kibosh on that unofficial port, but at the very least it showed that something like Portal was possible on a mobile device like the iPhone, even back in 2009. Mobile hardware has improved dramatically since then, but herein lies the problem for us iOS gamers: Nvidia themselves are doing the Portal port, targeting the Shield first and other devices which use Nvidia’s own Tegra chipset. According to a report from The Verge, the mobile port of Portal isn’t locked down to the Tegra chip in a technical sense, and it’s possible they’ll be expanding the game to a wider assortment of Android devices in the future. But, I really doubt Nvidia is anxious to bring their port over to iOS, despite the fact that it would sell like crazy. Stranger things have happened though, so we’ll have to wait and see if an official iOS Portal is in the cards someday. For Nvidia Shield and other Android device owners, look for Portal to be “coming soon."

Awesome! Really looking forward to the update. I've been playing the game a lot lately. Multiplayer will be fun, I just hope enough people will be playing.

If I thought Terraria was rather boring, would I like this?

      1. Jacob007

You might be better with Junk Jack X for a $5 price. This game is more action filled, as is Terraria, but JJX is exploration.

Hate to disagree but if he found Terraria boring I highly doubt he'd enjoy JJX. Most people specifically complain the mining is boring and considering that and exploration are the core of JJX I doubt he'd find the lack of combat and more of that entertaining. I enjoyed this one, but unlike Terraria there wasn't much to do after the end-game; solid 8-10 hours of playtime on the main story though.

i'd second this- hopefully the multiplayer and content update will change alleviate this issue.

      Gamecenter maybe ?

Yes, Gamecenter achievements and leaderboards would be very nice. Been hoping for this since release.

And a map. This game needs a map IMO...

Does this mean co-op play? If so I'll stop playing for now and wait until the update comes out lol

It's really not that good, this game. It's just I Dig It with a tiny bit more to do in the form of shooting enemies from time to time. But whoever started calling it Metroidvania has never played Metroid, or Castlevania.

    7. repapermunky

This game is a combination of I Dig It and Mars Miner, but it takes those two and adds a few new elements, and a lot more polish. Why it took them so long to make it, is beyond me; however, I really am enjoying this game a lot. That said, I got both Mars Miner and I Dig It for free at one point or another, and if you have those already, it's not extremely necessary to buy this game. But this game is definitely better than those two alone. It's has a bit of a Deepworld type feeling as well, with the jetpack and guns.
