SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Sonic Superstars’ Multiplayer Trailer, Plus Today’s New Releases and the Latest Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 23rd, 2023. In today’s article, we’ve got a few interesting news bits to check out from Gamescom and other sources. After that, we take a look at the sole new release of the day. At least it isn’t a Bin Bunch game? After that, it’s the usual lists of new sales and expiring discounts to look through. Not the busiest of days, but Wednesdays rarely are. Let’s get to the games!

‘Sonic Superstars’ Gets Release Date and New Multiplayer Trailer

Sonic creator Naoto Ohshima’s return to the series has been looking very good so far. Despite making the shift to polygons, it looks to have the all-important gameplay mechanics down. One of the big new gimmicks for this game is that you can play multiplayer with up to four players, and if you want to see how that looks in action then you’ll want to check out the new trailer SEGA released today. Not only does it give us a peek at how multiplayer works, it also gives us a final release date of October 17th (three days before Super Mario Wonder, the 16-bit wars are back baby!) and shows the nifty extras you can get with the Digital Deluxe version of the game. Give it a watch!

‘Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion’ & ‘Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster’ Are On The Way

If you’re looking for some fresh versions of classic first-person shooters, Nightdive Studios has some good stuff coming up. First up, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion. Nightdive has already brought the first two games in the classic Nintendo 64 shooter series to the Switch, and it’s ready to close out the trilogy with this release. Like the previous games, it runs on Nightdive’s KEX Engine which provides all manner of fancy improvements. The original game received pretty good review scores back in the day, and it certainly shows the signs of being developed in the wake of Half-Life‘s success. Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion will arrive on Switch and other platforms on November 14th.

But that’s not all from Nightdive. Also coming soon is Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster, which takes the enjoyable Star Wars-themed DOOM-like and shoves it through the KEX Engine to make all nice and spiffy for the modern age. Well, not too spiffy. Spiffy, but authentic. You can check out some early footage in that trailer above. There’s no firm release date yet, but we’ll apparently be getting one later this year. What we do know is that it will come to the Switch and other platforms when it does come. I’ve always been fond of this game and was hoping we would see it on Switch at some point. Wish granted?

New Releases

Virgo Versus The Zodiac ($19.99)

Here’s an interesting premise for an RPG. It’s a sci-fi adventure where you play as the adorable Virgo, the Holy Queen. Okay, some people call her the Dreadful Queen, but they’re just being rude. She’s on a mission to return the cosmos to the age of peace, and the only way to do that is to put a stop to the Zodiac Realms. But is she actually helping, or just forcing her ideals on others? I guess you’ll have to play to find out. I’ll have a review of this one soon, but it certainly has a feel all of its own so far.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Not a lot today, is there? I don’t really have much to comment on here. The inbox doesn’t have anything of particular interest in it, and Football Manager 2023 Touch is probably the only noteworthy thing in the outbox. Maybe Pillars of Eternity? I guess? Well, take a second and check those lists for yourself just to be sure.

But I’m sure it’s nothing. We’ll have summaries of those games, plus whatever sales and big news roll in during the next day. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
