Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 6th, 2023. We’ve hit the end of the week, and I gravely underestimated things today. There are something like a billion new sales because it’s the New Year, and I really should have anticipated that. I didn’t, and now my time is very short. So we’ll whip through the rather dubious list of new releases and then get to some choice selections from those sales. Here we go!
New Releases
The House of Da Vinci 3 ($9.99)
The third, and I suppose final, entry in the House of Da Vinci series arrives on Switch. Sure, these games are more than a little inspired by The Room, but we’re not exactly drowning in clever puzzle boxes with interesting stories and solid production values, are we? Solve some puzzles, uncover some conspiracies, travel through time and space, all the usual things that happen when you’re chilling with Leo at his crib. Do cool people still call houses ‘cribs’? I’m just asking for my old friend. Not me. I’m still extremely with it. Do cool people still say ‘with it’? I’m really getting in over my head here. Let’s move on.
Alphadia Neo ($14.99)
You know, I appreciate Kemco as much or more than most folks not named Phil, but even I have to wonder about the pricing on its cookie-cutter RPGs these days. I used to recommend these on mobile because they were only a few bucks, but now we’re at fifteen dollars plus in-app purchases when you can get something as brilliant as Chained Echoes for twenty-five. Oh well. Here’s another port. You can get it cheaper on mobile. It’s serviceable. There’s a neat little stance changing system that makes the battles somewhat more interesting than usual. If that’s enough for you, go for it.
Neon Souls ($4.99)
I feel like I’ve seen this game before. It’s a platformer where the walls are invisible but you paint them with ink as you go. There are fifty levels to play with four bosses to battle. You’ll do that with the basic precision platformer move set: jumping, double-jumping, wall-sliding, and so on. Big five-dollar Switch platformer energy, and what do you know? It’s actually five dollars.
Crime Secrets: Crimson Lily ($14.99)
Here’s the latest hidden object adventure game from the folks at Artifex Mundi, and I’m far too short on time today to try to put up a façade like you’re getting anything new here. Well, no. You’re getting a new story and new puzzles. So you are getting a lot new here, but the structure and general flow are the same. Which, when I think about it, is what a lot of game follow-ups do. So what am I on about? I have no idea. New Artifex Mundi. Solve the murder mystery or something.
Boat Simulator ($9.99)
This sure seems like a boat take on the usual BoomHits thing, but this one comes from Lunaria Games. You’ve got ten or so boats to drive, missions to accomplish, and a fair bit of space to boat about in. Will it be on deep discount in a few weeks? Maybe.
Collab Ball ($4.99)
Oh, it’s one of those platformers where you’re controlling a ball. This one has support for splitscreen play, so grab a friend and get to it. There are just over forty levels to play spread across three different worlds. Probably best enjoyed in that multiplayer mode, but if you like ball rollers you won’t be taking much of a risk by throwing a fiver down on this.
Shield Maiden: Remix Edition ($12.99)
Here’s a side scrolling action game with some nice visuals and gameplay that seems to take after the Mega Man X branch of the ol’ genre tree. Reviews on Steam seem to be on the positive side, so that’s nice. You’ve got nine levels to play through, and your character has an energy shield she uses to pull off some interesting techniques. Boss battles are a particular highlight here, and you get one at the end of each level. Just as things should be in this kind of action game, if you ask me. You didn’t, of course. Just a rhetorical device.
Clutter 12: It’s About Time – Collector’s Edition ($14.99)
See, it’s about time. And there are clocks. Quite clever. Anyway, here’s another one of the Clutter games. It has well over two thousand puzzles to solve, and now I’m a bit sheepish because I wrote the paragraph below about the Sudoku game before I wrote this one and touted its quantity. Its quantity is nothing compared to this. Nothing at all. You sift through the junk to find the junk you’re looking for. Then you do it again another two thousand times. Some decent music to do it all to, which is nice.
Bazzle ($5.15)
This game touts itself as a cross between sliding tile puzzles and Rubik’s Cube, and I suppose that could be a fun thing. There’s a practice mode in addition to the regular solo mode, and you can unlock stickers that you can decorate your screen with. Can’t say it’s the prettiest game around, but that’s not particularly important for puzzle games, is it?
I’ll Be Your Ideal Lover! – My Dream Lover – ($19.90)
A visual novel about some loser shmuck who ends up with a bunch of pretty girls fawning all over him through some bizarre contrivances. He wants to make each of them into his ideal lover; they have other ideas. In the end, someone will certainly be smooched. The localization is almost certainly sketchy, based on the fact that they haven’t even got the word wrap working right in the screenshots on the eShop.
Puzzle Vacations: Ireland ($11.99)
It’s a jigsaw puzzle game with thirty-three different pictures of Ireland. Quite pretty photos, really. You can play puzzles in different sizes so you can set things at the level of challenge you prefer. Not much else to say here.
Think Logic! Sudoku – Binary – Suguru ($9.99)
If you’re looking for quantity, here you go. Four hundred different puzzles across three different types. Sure, we’ve got a lot of other games with similar puzzles, but here they are all in one. Presentation seems nice for what it is.
Magic Card Tricks ($2.99)
Gee, we’ve really hit a low here. Cooking & Publishing today presents to us… a bunch of card trick tutorials. In text form. Seriously. I’m sure all the people who have no idea how to use Google search are going to be thrilled with this. Just more garbage cluttering the eShop.
