SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Amazing Superhero Squad’, ‘Ogre: Console Edition’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 25th, 2022. As many Wednesdays of late have been, it’s a little quiet today. We have a handful of new releases to check out, with summaries for each. Beyond that, it’s just the lists of fresh sales and expiring discounts. Well, not much we can do about it. Let’s have a look at what is here rather than pine for what isn’t. Here we go!

New Releases

Amazing Superhero Squad ($6.99)

A management sim where you run a superhero corporation. Not a huge fan of that premise in other games, but what can you do? Anyway, the idea here is that you have heroes working for you with different qualities, and you’ll send them out on various missions as they come up. In doing so, you’ll keep the city safe and make a profit. You’ll also unveil more of the story as you go. Not bad on paper, but a frankly dreadful English localization keeps the writing from being as readable as it should be in such a text-heavy game.

Ogre: Console Edition ($22.49)

It’s a video game version of the popular tabletop wargame from Steve Jackson Games. The ‘ogre’ the title refers to is a super-powered AI tank that can singlehandedly sway the outcome of a battle. One side plays as the Ogre, the other gets a bunch of different types of units to use. An oldie, but a goodie. For some reason, this version is for one player only. That’s kind of disappointing for this sort of game. Oh well.

Mechanic Battle ($9.99)

Fix up cars, customize them, tune them, and then race them in overhead battles. It’s single-player only, which I suppose makes sense as no one wants to wait around for everyone else to tweak their rides. Use your winnings from the races to buy more junkheaps to fix up, and so on. That’s the loop. I’m not sure how the racing action itself is, but it’s somewhat difficult to mess up a top-down racer too badly. Which is not to say it can’t be done, but usually these play fine enough. Not sure who needs another fixer-upper game or another racer game, but at least this one has the courtesy to give you both in one package.

Blow & Fly ($4.99)

This is a cute physics puzzler where you play as a blowfish that needs to make its way to the toilet on each of the more than seventy stages. You can only move by spitting water to launch yourself into the air, so you have to aim carefully and hope you don’t overshoot your target. With some secret areas to find and fun unlockables, this does just about what you would want a five-dollar game to do.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Continuing the theme for today, there isn’t a whole ton of stuff to dig into here. Some of the usual sales from 2K Games, and a few other regular faces like Moonlighter, Children of Morta, and Old Man’s Journey. Over in the outbox, I’ll highlight Wuppo Definitive Edition, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter, and Dark Deity. Certainly there are some good games in both lists, but realistically most of them will be on sale again soon so there isn’t any particular urgency when it comes to buying them. Pick them up if you want to play them now, but if you’re just going to stockpile them, it’s probably not necessary.

That’s all for today, friends. Tomorrow is a Thursday, and that means we’ll at least have a bunch of new releases to dig into. When I checked earlier, I saw about ten games on the schedule. There will certainly be a couple more that just drop in as well. We’ll have summaries of all of them, plus whatever sales and big news bits roll in over the course of the day. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
