SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Cotton Fantasy’, ‘Will Die Alone’, ‘PigShip & the Giant Wolf’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 20th, 2022. In today’s article, we mop up the remaining releases for the week. The biggest game today is Cotton Fantasy, but there are a few other interesting titles to look at. Pretty much everything outside Cotton is fairly cheap in today’s list, which may be relief for your wallet. Just when you think you might be safe, here comes the lists of new and expiring sales. If you can make it through those with some extra money intact, then you win. Something like that, anyway. Let’s go!

‘Kirby 64’ is Now Available for Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Subscribers

As announced last week, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is now available on the Nintendo 64 app for Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers. Originally released back in the year 2000 (in the yeeaaaaar two thousaaaand), Kirby 64 sees the pink puffball out to save Ripple Star by collecting crystal shards and defeating Dark Matter. The main gameplay gimmick involves the ability to combine copy powers, producing some very interesting results. It’s a fun game, so if you subscribe to the Expansion Pack then go ahead and update to add it to your collection.

New Releases

Cotton Fantasy ($39.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

After a whole lot of remakes and rereleases, we’ve got a fully new Cotton game to enjoy with the release of Cotton Fantasy. I’ve already reviewed this, but in case you missed it I found it to be quite an excellent side-scrolling shoot-em-up with plenty of variety and few of the technical issues that have plagued some of the Cotton releases on Switch. It’s also pretty funny. Anyway, it’s a solid example of the genre and easily vies with Cotton Reboot for the title of best Cotton game ever.

Will Die Alone ($4.99)

You’ve just started a new job, and it’s a rather unique one. Customers come to you looking to have their memories reshaped. You need to choose which memories to keep and which to delete, and your choices will have consequences for the future of your clients. Could be an interesting one for fans of narrative games to dig into and mess around with, and the price is certainly right.

PigShip and the Giant Wolf ($7.99)

A side-scrolling shoot-em-up featuring a pig trying to save his brothers from the Wolf Army. There’s some nice pixel art in here, especially for the bosses. It uses that limited color palette style that was trendy a while back, giving it a distinctive look. There’s apparently a leveling system in here, but I can’t find much information about exactly how it has been implemented. And hey, it even has online leaderboards. Might be worth a look.

The Legend of the Dragonflame Highschool Collection ($4.99)

This is basically dollar-store Kunio-kun/River City Ransom, except it costs the same as River City Ransom. You get both games in the series here, and as you can probably guess from the price neither one of them is very complicated or long. The gameplay is very rough, too. Still, there’s a curious charm to it. There are probably worse ways to spend a fiver today.

Isekai Bride Hunting ($19.90)

Earth has merged with another world. Pretty big news, but for some reason our hapless protagonist can only think of the cross-species dating opportunities. This is a visual novel game where you court your choice of four different other-world ladies. There’s an elf, a cat-girl, a vampire, and a demon. For some reason they’re all over the main character, who is just an unassuming Japanese businessman. Who will you choose?

Super Hero Driving School ($9.99)

Another ridiculous driving game from… BoomBit. This one is BoomBit. Anyway, you get a bunch of wacky vehicles and over-the-top tracks, but at its core this isn’t terribly different from the handful of other games in this vein released by this developer of late. It will probably be half-price by next month.

Puzzle Collection ($4.99)

Another jigsaw puzzle game. You get forty puzzles to solve at three different levels of difficulty. The pictures are drawn from three categories: animals, fairy tales, and adventures. It has touchscreen support, so it at least meets that bar. I don’t know how many people need another one of these, but here it is.

Egg Runner ($2.99)

Pix Arts ahoy. It’s an endless runner where you guide an egg and run and jump around a tower. Junk as usual with this developer. Buy a few delicious Snickers bars instead. You’ll have more fun.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Bandai Namco and Ubisoft sales seem to come and go every week, but we’ve got some of those in today’s list. There are also some sales from THQ Nordic, including a somewhat uncommon sale on Titan Quest and its expansions. Speaking of unusual sales, Namco is celebrating Pac-Man’s birthday with a 50% off sale on the DLC for Pac-Man 99. We probably won’t see a sale on that stuff again for another year, so if you want it grab it now. Also take note of Tempest 4000, with its first post-launch sale being a rather significant one. Kairosoft is having a sale on several of its titles as well. Lots of good stuff, so check those lists carefully.
