SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass’, ‘Fingun’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for March 18th, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve got several new releases to check out. The most notable thing hitting the eShop today is the first wave of new courses for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but there are a few other interesting games to look at as well. We’ve got summaries of all of them as usual. Then there are the sales. Gosh, are there sales. Hundreds of them, even with a bit of healthy curation. Let’s get to the games!

New Releases

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass ($24.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

The biggest release of today is DLC, but when it’s DLC for one of the best-selling games in history, how could we ignore it? The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass has its first wave of content available now, adding eight new tracks and two new cups to the game. There will be another forty tracks and eight cups added through the end of 2023 in regular drops, and buying this pass entitles you to all of them as they arrive. Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass holders can access this content at no additional cost, naturally. The courses this time include Paris Promenade, Tokyo Blur, and Ninja Hideaway from Mario Kart Tour, Toad Circuit from Mario Kart 7, Choco Mountain from Mario Kart 64, Coconut Mall from Mario Kart Wii, Shroom Ridge from Mario Kart DS, and Sky Garden from Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? ($12.99)

Wales Interactive has another FMV adventure available. In this one, Uncle Marcus has been poisoned and Abby needs to save him. Make your decisions and hopefully make your way to an ending where your uncle survives and the culprit is caught. Regular players of Wales Interactive’s work will recognize a couple of faces here among the actors. I can’t really get into these, but if you’ve enjoyed them in the past you’ll probably like this one too.

Sea Battle Minimal ($4.99)

Yes, that’s Battleship alright. A very minimalistic Battleship. Why, if one were so inclined, they could perfectly simulate what this game offers using two sheets of paper and a couple of pencils. But this does let you play against the computer, so I guess that’s something. Multiplayer is available in both online and local forms. Personally, I think Battleship is a bit boring at its core, and I reckon that is why Milton Bradley/Hasbro is always adding weird (and sometimes literal) bells and whistles to it. Maybe you like it more than I do.

Fingun ($4.99)

I’m genuinely surprised this isn’t an eastasiasoft joint. No, it comes from publisher Gamezumi and developer Pixelteriyaki. At any rate, it is a horizontally-scrolling shoot-em-up where you play as a flying finger gun battling giant anime girls who have invaded the world. Blast through fourteen levels filled with a lot of wacky sights and sounds, unlocking pictures for the special gallery mode as you go. It has its tongue planted very firmly in its cheek, and if you’re looking for something goofy, cheap, and fun you could certainly do worse than this.

Royal Frontier ($6.99)

Another Woblyware platf- wait a minute, this isn’t a platformer! It’s an RPG with turn-based combat? Neat. It has that usual Woblyware look to its sprites, but with a type of gameplay they haven’t really tackled before as far as I know. Travel node by node, battling foes and beefing up your party. Choose which roads you want to travel on, and unlock cool new characters and power-ups for your next attempt. So yes, it has that kind of element to it as well. I suppose I’ll review this one sometime next week.

Inukari – Chase of Deception ($7.99)

Run and jump through twenty-four levels set across three different worlds in this platformer. A very straightforward experience, but I suppose some of the sprite work is nice. You play as the god of an ancient forest, which you would think would afford you some better transportation than your own two feet. Well, I suppose it is nice to see some humility in a deity.

The Ramp ($5.99)

A minimalist skateboarding experience created by a skateboarder. There are no missions. No score. No unlockable goodies or gap checklists. You’re just meant to enjoy the pure experience of pulling off tricks on the halfpipe. Fancy that.

Wordbreaker by POWGI ($7.99)

It’s rare for Lightwood Games to just straight port over an existing word game without adding some kind of twist, but here we are. This is Wordle, except you get a corny joke after solving each one. You can probably just call your dad and play the much cheaper Words with Freds if you want to save a few bucks.

Jumping Bricks Ball ($3.99)

Pix Arts pulls another probable template flip out of the bin. This one is a brick breaker. The main gimmick is that the bricks move down the screen instead of remaining stationary. There are so many better games of this type on the eShop, I can’t imagine ever buying this junk.

#1 Pastime Bundle ($7.99)

Another #1 bundle, this time cutting to the chase and including all three games in the line. You get #1 Crosswords, #1 Anagrams, and #1 Sudokus, and unless the separate games are on sale (like they are at the time of writing) this is almost certainly going to be the cheapest way to get all three. Assuming that is a thing you want to do, anyway.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

I took a long time typing all of these out, and now my fingers are sore. I tried to cut the total junk, but there’s still a staggering amount of discounts on offer here. All I can recommend is my usual bit of advice: comb through those lists carefully. Maybe a little CTRL-F if there’s a game in particular you’re looking for. Good luck!

That’s all for today and this week, friends. Next week is going to be a busy one, with games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Rune Factory 5, Tempest 4000, and Andro Dunos 2 among others coming. We’ll have summaries of all the new games, some reviews, lots of sales, and a bit of news as usual. After I rest for a couple of days, anyway. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
