SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Spelunker HD Deluxe’, ‘Badland’, and Today’s Other New Releases, Plus a Massive List of New Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 6th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a whole bunch of new games to look at. There are a few good ones, but this is a pretty mediocre batch on the whole compared to yesterday. We’ve got summaries of all of them anyway. The real star today is the enormous list of new sales, including titles from Nintendo, Capcom, and many more. Let’s dive on in and check everything out!

New Releases

Spelunker HD Deluxe ($24.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

The legendary classic returns in this spiffy new HD remake packed with modes and extras to enjoy. Make your way through exasperating obstacles in search of lost treasures, and be careful not to fall too far as your character is about as brittle as glass. There’s an adventure mode, a competition mode, a championship mode, and the randomized Infinite Cave NEO mode to play. The game features multiplayer support both locally via splitscreen and over the internet for up to six players at once. We’ll have a full review of this one soon, friends. But if you know Spelunker, you probably already know whether you’ll like this or not.

Badland: Game of the Year Edition ($5.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Regular readers of TouchArcade will surely remember Badland from its mobile release. And here it is, now on your Nintendo Switch at a reasonable price. Fly through a gorgeous, lengthy 100-level single-player campaign filled with sights and sounds that will keep you in awe. Adding to that, there’s support for local multiplayer co-op and battle modes so that you can play with a few of your friends or family members. Whether you’re playing for the first time or just feel like revisiting this awesome classic, this is a great way to enjoy Badland.

The Last Survey ($14.99)

This is a choice-based narrative game that deals with the topics of resource scarcity and humanity’s growing demands. It feels a lot like an interactive essay in practice, but it’s certainly a well-written one that comes off as incredibly well-informed. The visuals are simple but striking, and while I wouldn’t exactly call this a fun experience it certainly is an educational one. There are multiple endings based on how you make your choices, so there’s a bit of replay value in here. All that said, I think if you want to check it out, you’re better off grabbing it on your computer. It’s a third of the price and you don’t really lose out on anything by playing it there.

Race Track Driver ($11.99)

It feels like these games are rolling in weekly of late. Here’s another driving game, this time with a race track theme. That car up there looks a lot like a Lancia Stratos, but somehow I doubt there are any real licenses involved here. Anyway, you work with a virtual driving instructor, drive sixteen high performance vehicles, and try to complete sixty-four driving tests to earn your racing license. I feel like these games usually benefit from exploring niches that other driving games never touch, but this particular category is a rather well-trodden field that Race Track Driver really isn’t able to compete in.

Gems of Magic: Father’s Day ($9.99)

Here’s the next in the Gems of Magic series from publisher Denda Games, this time with a bafflingly out-of-season Father’s Day theme. A father and son are separated on a camping trip, and you need to help the father reunite with his son. You’ll do that by playing through 100 rounds of a matching puzzle game that looks and plays almost exactly like Candy Crush, right down to the same assortment of power-ups and special pieces. Indeed, I think you would get a far better experience just downloading Candy Crush on your mobile device and playing the first one hundred levels. I sure wouldn’t pay ten bucks for this, personally.

Morto – Chapter 1 ($0.98)

At a mere ninety-eight cents, this is assuredly the cheapest game you’re going to see in today’s list. The money is probably a trifle, but is the game worth that buck? Hm. You play as a mysterious character and have to walk around the game’s environments, trying to piece together the story. This is just the first chapter out of who-knows-how-many, so I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you aren’t going to get much in the way of answers or resolution here. It deals heavily with themes of depression, so make sure you’re okay with that topic if you plan on taking a punt on the game.

LogScape – Puzzle Game ($6.99)

Well, here’s that familiar old block puzzle template resurfacing again. The only question is which one of our bad boys is behind it? Ah, it’s Digital Game Group, a publisher that has been doing this often enough of late that I’m starting to remember their name. Anyway, as mentioned this is precisely the same template we’ve seen flipped several times onto the Switch, right down to only being playable with touch controls and having that distinctive mark on the red block. Probably the same levels, too. But at least there are hundreds of them. I wouldn’t encourage this, but I’m not the boss of your life.

Zengeon ($19.99)

Ah okay, this is one of those games. It’s an action-RPG where you slice and dice your way through tons of enemies and bosses using your character of choice. Some elements are randomized so you’ll never quite get the same experience twice. You know, in theory. In practice, it all kind of mushes together. What helps this one is that you can play with up to four players via online multiplayer, which keeps things a lot spicier than they might otherwise have been. It doesn’t make the game a must-have or anything but it does help it from being completely unremarkable.

Bone Marrow ($4.99)

This is kind of Threes! meets a roguelite, and it looks like it could be a reasonably good time. Swipe or move to combine items on the board to strengthen them, then equip yourself with them to defeat monsters as they appear. Somehow, there’s a local multiplayer mode for two players to presumably duel with each other. There are four different maps to play on, and unlockable characters to unveil and make use of. Could be fun if you’re in the right sort of mood.

Smashroom ($9.99)

Wow, that is really blurry. Well, what can you do? Anyway, this is a platformer where you play as a person who has been turned into a walking mushroom thing. You can explode at will, which can be used in a variety of ways. Defeating enemies, sure. But also for mid-air jumping, like that Splosion fellow. There’s also a leveling system that allows you to upgrade your stats as you see fit, because half of all platformers have to have that now. Not the most inspired thing around, but it seems fine.

Project Aether: First Contact ($9.99)

This is a short but slickly-produced twin-stick shooter where you control a flying mech suit called the Aether. Battle through each bite-sized level with an ever-expanding arsenal of cool weapons, and learn when to use your EMP blast to gain the upper hand on your foes. Beyond the story campaign, which actually does try to tell a story, you also get a boss rush and a survival mode to help extend things a bit. It’s a decent enough time, albeit one that ends a little too quickly. I wouldn’t call it a must-have or anything but if you enjoy blasting through twin-stick shooters now and then you could do a lot worse than this.

Pixel Game Maker Series Block Slime Cave ($7.00)

This is a cute little puzzle platformer where you need to use little cubic slimes to make your way through a series of caves. You can play alone or pull in a friend via local multiplayer. The single-player mode features fifty stages where you need to open doors by finding keys or flipping switches. Sometimes you’ll have to guide NPCs to the exit as well. The key to solving the puzzles comes in the variety of block slimes you’ll encounter, each with their own special property. The multiplayer mode features its own set of thirty stages to clear, specifically designed for two players to clear. A pleasing puzzler for the price.

Castle of Pixel Skulls ($4.99)

This is a rather unimpressive platformer about a little skeleton trying to make its way through forty stages of traps and hazards. It seems like a set-up for a nice ultra-tough platformer, but it’s kind of a dull one all-around. The difficulty never really picks up properly, the controls don’t feel very good, and the game runs out of ideas for its level designs really early on. As a result, I feel that this game doesn’t even manage to reach up to the five-dollar-platformer level.

Mahjong Masters ($5.99)

And here’s Benjamin Kistler with his latest junky release. As usual, it requires touch controls so you can only play it undocked. Match the tiles and try to clear the board in some of the simplest mahjong solitaire puzzles I’ve ever seen. There are apparently over three hundred stages in here, along with daily challenges, extra tile sets, and a few different backgrounds. I can’t imagine buying this when there are so many better options for mahjong solitaire on the Switch, but I’m sure Benny will make his money back on the template purchase in no time as usual.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Holy smokes. There are a lot of games on sale today, friends. A lot. I can’t even begin to hit all the highlights, but do take note that there is a small assortment of Nintendo-published titles on offer. Sales on first-party games don’t come up terribly often, so take advantage of any discounts on games you’ve had your eye on. They’re not likely to repeat for a long time. I’ll also note that a number of the SEGA AGES games are down to a ridiculous $2.79, and you should buy each and every one of them at that price. You know what I’m going to say: check through those lists carefully, friends. Maybe prepare a drink before you settle in.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We’ll be back next week with more new games and probably fewer sales, along with some reviews, news, and other assorted goodies as usual. I recently picked up the Samurai Shodown Collection for my Switch, so I’m going to sink my teeth into that a little this weekend. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
