SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘A Plague Tale: Innocence – Cloud Version’, ‘Blitz Breaker’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 7th, 2021. So, yesterday happened. Fortunately, Jared was able to squeeze the news about the Switch OLED into yesterday’s article after I had gone home for the night. I don’t have too much to add, except that I wish I had the money to upgrade but am also a bit relieved it’s not something substantial enough that I need to. Anyway, in today’s article we have some news about some upcoming events, summaries of the handful of new games that hit the eShop today, and a bunch of new and outgoing sales to check out. Let’s head to the office!

News

It’s Fists of Fury in the Next ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event

You know the routine by now, friends. It’s Wednesday, and that means it’s time to find out what the next weekend event is in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It was a bit odd last week that Kazuya Mishima arrived to the game without the event corresponding to him, as we tend to see with new Smash arrivals. Well, that’s being rectified this week. The Tekken Tournament event is, as it says on the tin, a tournament event. The eligible participants are characters who fight without using weapons. Only fists, feet, and the occasional headbutt allowed in this one. The event will run for the typical three days, from Friday to Monday.

The Next ‘Tetris 99’ Maximus Cup Event Heads for the Links

It hasn’t been that long since the previous Maximus Cup event celebrating the release of Miitopia, but we’ve already got another one knocking on the door. Kicking off this Friday and running for three days through the weekend, the 22nd Maximus Cup event puts Mario Golf: Super Rush in the spotlight. Enjoy a special theme for the duration of the event and aim to collect 100 points to add it to your collection permanently. Sure, I’m always up to throw another one in the ol’ theme jar.

New Releases

A Plague Tale: Innocence – Cloud Version ($39.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

I guess these Cloud Versions must be doing alright, or we wouldn’t be seeing more of them. It’s a stealth/survival game set in 14th century France, where the black plague is running amok. You’re being hunted by Inquisition soldiers and disease-ridden rats are everywhere. You and your little brother have to find a way to survive this horrible situation. Reviews on this game were favorable on other platforms, and the reception from players was even sunnier. Just keep in mind that you need to have an internet connection to play this as it is a streaming title. There’s a free demo you can try out to see if your connection is up to snuff.

Ruvato – Original Complex ($14.99)

This game bills itself as an action-packed hack-and-slash experience, but while there is a fair bit of that there are also a great deal of story scenes and awkward platforming bits to go with it. And that is unfortunate, because the stabby parts are very good while the other stuff isn’t as enjoyable. The emphasis is on chaining your attacks, which increases your power and makes it easier to mow down the next opponent. It’s more good than bad, but if you think you’ll get frustrated trying to jump around moving platforms from an isometric perspective, steer well clear of this game. I’ll at least grant that it looks pretty good, and I suppose the non-combat elements are there to try to keep the gameplay from getting stale, but I think they ultimately end up dragging the game down.

Blitz Breaker ($4.99)

This looks like it could be a bit of fun. You have to make your way through stages of what appears to be platforming challenges, except there is a twist: you can’t run or walk. Jump? Sure. Dash in the air? Like a pro-star. But you can’t move along the ground. You get just over 100 levels to play, with plenty of interesting gimmicks and obstacles to keep things spicy. There are four bosses to battle, and you can collect a bunch of different heads to customize your look with. Some raw five-dollar Switch platformer energy here, and I mean that in the best way.

Marbles Rush ($4.99)

Ol’ Benjamin Kistler must have felt like splashing out this week, as we’ve got another fine Unity Asset Store template purchase from him here. It’s yet another rip-off of Mitchell Corporation’s Puzz Loop, perhaps best known in the West in the guise of Pop Cap’s very successful knock-off, Zuma. Shoot the colored marbles at the chain of marbles surrounding you, trying to match three of the same color to remove them. Don’t let the chain get backed up too far, or you’ll lose. There are 80 levels in this particular clone. This one is handheld only because the template was for Android phones and Benny sure isn’t going to put in the work to add button controls.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

A few interesting sales in today’s list. Lost Words: Beyond the Page is a nice game to play through at least once. New Star Manager is a fun soccer management sim that is more than worth four bucks. Those who enjoy dungeon crawlers may want to give Vaporum a look for a mere tenner. There are plenty of great games in the outbox, too. Games from Arc System Works, the Power Rangers fighting game, Tiny Metal, and several others are all worth considering. Check those lists, friends.

That’s all for today, friends. We’ll be back tomorrow with the first big batch of releases to close out the week, though outside of Boomerang X I’m not seeing a lot of exciting stuff in the line-up. Surprises always come, though. There should also be some new sales to look at, and who knows, maybe a new console or something. Apparently you can never be too sure these days. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
