SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Miitopia’, ‘Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance’, and Today Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 21st, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got several new releases to check out including Nintendo’s Miitopia and Interplay’s Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. There are a ton of sales to look at, like Ori and the Will of the Wisps, several of Hamster’s Arcade Archives titles, and a bunch of stuff from WB Games. It’s a big-pants one today, friends. Let’s get to it!

New Releases

Miitopia ($49.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Having nearly exhausted the Wii U catalog for Switch ports, Nintendo now turns its attention to latter-day 3DS releases that perhaps didn’t get their fair due. Is Miitopia one of those games? Well, I can’t really say. It’s silly and fun like most of the Mii-related games are, but I don’t think it would have been one of my top picks to bring over to the Switch. Anyway, after you make a bunch of Miis (because you probably don’t have many at the moment), head into a light RPG adventure where you try to defeat the bad guys to save everyone’s stolen faces. The characters you meet along the way will be based on the Miis you created, so that’s cute. I’m not sure if I’ll be reviewing this one or not yet. We’ll see.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance ($29.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

After a bit of a wait, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is finally up on the eShop. Things are a bit different these days, but time was that you couldn’t get many decent Diablo-style action-RPGs on home consoles. In the PlayStation 2/Xbox/Gamecube generation, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance (and its sequel) scratched the itch quite nicely. You and a friend could hack, slash, and zap your way through an entire Monstrous Compendium worth of trouble set in the Forgotten Realms world. And now you can do it again on your Switch! Just be advised that it’s not quite as long, fully-featured, or as deep as some more modern games in the genre like Diablo III or the Torchlight games. Still pretty good fun, though.

Cosmic Top Secret ($9.99)

This is an off-beat adventure game about a secret agent named T who is investigating her parents’ past, trying to find answers about their involvement in the Cold War. Were they also spies? What exactly did they do? Apparently this game is based on real documentary audio recordings by the director when she was looking into her mother and father’s time in the Danish Intelligence Service. Wrap that story up in a very unique and distinctive art style, and that’s Cosmic Top Secret. It has won a handful of awards, and the reviews seem to be generally positive on other platforms. If you’re looking for something different today, this may serve you well.

Guards ($4.99)

This is a turn-based strategy game where you have four heroes in your team and can only keep three of them in active battle at a time. The fourth will chill in the back row and recover. So you have to swap characters as necessary to make sure no one dies and everyone gets a chance to use their skills. Heroes moving from the back to the front will also unleash a special move if it has had time to charge, adding an extra element of strategy to the game. Neat idea, but it’s a bit dull in practice.

Wanna Survive ($14.99)

When I saw the title and glanced at a screenshot, I wasn’t expecting it to be a turn-based strategy game. That’s just what Wanna Survive is, though. It’s apparently streamlined, so if the likes of XCOM send you running away screaming, this might be more to your tastes. This is one of those strategy games with perma-death, though. I mean, it’s a zombie apocalypse. You also need to carefully manage your resources, as you have limited amounts of food and not everyone is going to be able to eat every meal. There are three difficulty settings, and the game includes music done by Ridiculon of Binding of Isaac fame. Rare to see a new Nicalis release these days.

Gutwhale ($4.99)

I know Ratalaika ports games from a wide variety of developers and thus doesn’t really have a house style to call its own, but Gutwhale sure does seem like a Ratalaika pick. It’s a roguelite action game set in the innards of a whale. There are three different areas, lots of hats to unlock, and a decent variety of enemies to battle. It’s not that it doesn’t have anything to differentiate itself, but something about this game just isn’t grabbing my attention. I’m sure you can get five bucks of fun out of it if you’re inclined to, though.

Undead Battle Royale ($9.00)

In spite of the title, this isn’t a battle royale game in the sense that the term has come to be known. You can play in single-player, completing missions while battling the zombie hordes, or you can play in local multiplayer with up to four players at once, competing with each other to see who can get the highest score. This one comes from SAT-BOX, who do all those Desktop Sports and Voxel games. I’m sure it’s solid enough, but I simply can’t see much appeal in paying nine bucks for a facsimile of an experience you can enjoy for free with other, better games.

Driving World: Aspen ($11.99)

Didn’t get enough of driving in the snow in Driving World: Nordic Challenge? Here’s Driving World: Aspen. It gives you another somewhat spacious open area to drive around in, with an assortment of vehicles and missions to give some purpose to the activity. The vehicles run from a snowmobile to a bus, so you have different ways to enjoy your driving. If you just want to mess around, there is a free roam mode as usual. This is another BoomBit game, and there’s probably a free mobile version you can try if you want to get a taste.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Over two hundred new sales today, friends. Hamster has put several of the Arcade Archives and ACA NEOGEO titles on sale. Ori and the Will of the Wisps gets its deepest discount to date. THQ and WB Games have a number of their games on sale, and Dungeon of the Endless is cheap as chips. All that, and plenty more. The weekend outbox doesn’t have too much going on, but Turrican fans will want to grab Gunlord X while they can. It’s a rare sale. Check those lists carefully as usual, of course.
