Indie developer Somi is no stranger to the world of mobile, having previously released the extremely unique mirror-flipping puzzler RETSNOM ($2.99) back in October of 2016 as well as the clever faux smartphone hacking game Replica: A Little Temporary Safety ($2.99). Both titles, and in fact all of Somi’s games including the ones that aren’t available on mobile, always seem to have an emphasis on narrative and telling some surprisingly impactful stories as part of the experience. This looks to be even more pronounced in his latest game The Wake: Mourning Father, Mourning Mother, which launched to a positive reception on Steam last summer and will be heading to iOS and Android devices this Friday. This is the third game in what Somi refers to as his “Guilt Trilogy" which includes the aforementioned Replica and the 2019 PC and Nintendo Switch title Legal Dungeon. And yeah, it feels like a fitting name based on the vibe in this trailer for The Wake.
As you can see, The Wake is a puzzle game that has you solving various ciphers that together will unlock “a record of past wounds opened at a three-day funeral –– a record of the roots of guilt, and the memories and emotions that chain together three generations of a family." The ciphers themselves aren’t designed to be especially challenging, and solving them is more about piecing together the story and more importantly the state of mind of the person who wrote all the ciphers in a journal in the first place. It sounds incredibly intriguing, and as mentioned has been well-received on PC since launching last year. The Wake is scheduled to arrive on mobile later this week on April 2nd at a price of $3.99, and you can pre-order the iOS version here or pre-register for the Android version here. In the meantime you can find an additional cinematic trailer, more screens and info, and some discussion with Somi himself over in the thread in our forums.
