We are coming up on the one-year anniversary of developer Hidden Variable Studios announcing that, for the first time in more than 5 years, they would be bringing a brand new playable character to the Skullgirls mobile game in 2020. In August we learned all about that new character, Annie of the Stars, a peripheral character in the Skullgirls universe at large who already had a very fleshed-out back story and a character who fans had previously hoped might become a playable character someday. In October Annie arrived as part of the version 4.4 update to Skullgirls Mobile.
Along with Skullgirls on mobile, Hidden Variable also announced that Annie of the Stars would make her way to Skullgirls 2nd Encore on PC and console as well sometime in early 2021. Well, during the Frosty Faustings competitive fighting game event that was held online over the weekend, Hidden Variable dropped a brand new trailer for Annie’s forthcoming 2nd Encore arrival, and it includes a tasty tease at the very end.
Yes, as confirmed by Hidden Variable in an FAQ over on the Skullgirls Mobile forums, development is already underway for another brand new character following the warm reception of Annie on mobile last fall. Hidden Variable is remaining tight lipped about who exactly this new character could be, but they aren’t afraid to tease some truly silly ideas, such as the Canopy Kingdom News anchor, “A Skeleton“, or an Ice Cream Truck. All three extremely worthy considerations, and word on the street is that Ice Cream Truck has been hitting the gym like crazy and is in peak physical condition.
They promise that more details about this new fighter will be revealed in the coming months, and as for Annie’s arrival in 2nd Encore, they don’t have a specific date for that just yet but do say they’re on target for their original window of early 2021. She will first arrive as DLC on Steam as sort of an early access release, and over the following weeks will be tweaked and balanced based on player feedback before being rolled out to the console versions of Skullgirls 2nd Encore. We will of course keep our eye out for more details surrounding this mysterious new character as 2021 marches on.
