This is our last regular SwitchArcade article for the year, as new releases and news are probably going to be quiet for the rest of this week. What you will see over the next couple of days is the Best of 2020 content that Mikhail and I have been working hard on, so do look forward to that. For today, we’ve got some Mini-Views to check out, a couple of news stories, and the usual lists of sales. Since I’ve included the sales ending over the next few days, that section is a bit on the bigger side. Well, it’s not like we pay for paper or ink here. Let’s go out with a bang!

This Week’s ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event is a Superstar
Because of the holidays last week, I didn’t have a chance to talk about the weekend Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event. Oh no! Well that won’t be happening this time around. I’m here to tell you that on January 1st, a new three-day event kicks off the New Year. It’s a tournament event focused on stars, with star-related items taking center stage. Well, my work here is done. Enjoy another year of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate events, everyone!
Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Can Play ‘Crash Team Racing’ Free For a Week
If you happen to be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber, you’re probably happy to get any extra benefits where you can. They’re… they’re not common! Well, at least it’s cheap. Anyway, a new Game Trial is on top, and it starts today. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is fully playable for Switch Online subscribers from today, December 30th, through January 5th. As usual, the game will be available to purchase for a discount for a brief period, and any progress you make in the trial will carry over to the full version should you choose to pick it up. It’s a fun racer, so make sure you give it a try if you have a subscription.

Dicey Dungeons ($14.99)
Well, this game is just plain awesome. It’s kind of a dungeon-crawl roguelite thing, but the battles use an interesting dice mechanic that really helps the game stand out. As you make your way through each floor, you’ll find various skills that you can pick and choose from to fill out your battle actions. Each turn you roll a number of dice and assign them to those skills to use them. There are lots of different kinds of enemies and skills, and the maps themselves, while simple, have some points of interest and branching paths you can choose to explore. One of those games where you fire it up meaning to play for twenty minutes and end up playing for four hours. I’d expect no less from Terry Cavanagh, though.

Mercenaries Blaze: Dawn of the Twin Dragons ($19.99)
The Mercenaries series is probably never going to win any prizes for originality, but it does what it does quite well. To the developer’s credit, each game gets a little better. Mercenaries Blaze is no exception, and its new 3D backgrounds help bring the presentation a little closer to the game most players tend to associate this genre with. Setting all that aside, this is a meat-and-potatoes tactical RPG that offers a decent story, satisfying character building, and enjoyable battles. It’s a fairly lengthy affair, so you get a good bang for your buck. I’ve been happy enough with all of the games in this series, and Mercenaries Blaze keeps the tradition going.

Fatal Fury: First Contact ($7.99)
Another NEOGEO Pocket Color re-release, and it’s yet another fighting game. This one is based on Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, and it shares a lot of mechanics with the already-released Gals Fighters and King of Fighters R-2. It has a bit more of a deliberate pace compared to those two, but it’s not a departure on the level of Samurai Shodown or The Last Blade. The options and extras here are identical to previous releases, so it really all comes down to how specifically interested you are in the Fatal Fury branch of the SNK fighting game empire. Personally, I like the mix of characters in King of Fighters and the gameplay in Gals Fighters better, but this is fine.

Override 2: Super Mech League ($29.99)
There’s a very deliberate change in the gameplay of this game when compared to the original, and I suppose how well that will sit with you depends on how much you enjoyed the first game’s quirks. This feels a lot more conventional, aiming for an easier-to-understand arena fighter that happens to star giant robots. The campaign mode is amusing enough but not really worth the price of admissions alone. Battling against other players is more fun, provided you can find opponents. Still, there’s a certain thrill to seeing giants battling it out, especially if you pick up the Ultraman DLC. This Switch version has some performance issues when the action gets hot, but it’s not unplayable or anything. Probably not the optimal way to play, though.
