With the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 set to arrive in less than two weeks depending on where you live, both Microsoft and Sony previously announced big updates to their own mobile apps. The big Xbox app update that recently went live cuts out many features like the store, redeeming codes, achievements, and more sadly. Over the years, Xbox has always had a way better mobile app compared to Sony’s offering that always felt like a web app with tweaks. Today, the big PlayStation App (Free) update has gone live and it is pretty great so far. Alongside the integration of messaging, the new interface, and support for voice chat are features everyone expected. I was afraid the store would get removed but Sony did something even better. The new store feels great to use in the app and you can remotely download games as you’d hope. Check out a video showcasing the app below:
On PS5, this app will be able to remotely launch games, manage storage space, and more in addition to the features available right now. You can also track your trophies for games within the updated app for PS4 games right now. While I really do not like the new PlayStation web store that removed support for PS Vita and PS3 games, the mobile app experience for the store is good. It is going to be interesting to see how the store is improved over time because I can’t imagine the current web store is final given how it lacks basic features. Thankfully, the new app is great to use but I hope they update it to support landscape on iPad. If you already had the app installed, today’s new feature are all in the newest update. If you don’t have the app yet, you can get it on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. Have you pre-ordered a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S?
