SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Green Hell’, ‘FIFA 21 Legacy Edition’, ‘Super Arcade Racing’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for October 9th, 2020. In today’s article, we have the promised giant list of sales. Wow, there are a lot of them. The number of games on the Switch increases by the hundreds each month, and that makes these weekly sales become even more of a hassle as time goes on. Well, nothing to be done about it. A bunch of new games came out today as well, and we’ll naturally be taking a look at each of them in the usual manner. Let’s get to work, friends!

New Releases

Super Arcade Racing ($9.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Lots of games trying to follow in the footsteps of Micro Machines lately on the Switch, aren’t there? Well, that’s fine. And so is this! In fact, if I really give it some serious thinkies, I’d go so far as to say this is one of the better top-down racers we’ve seen come to the Switch. The graphics are nice, the controls feel good, and there’s a lot of content to play through. It even has multiplayer for up to four players both locally and online. It’s half the price on PC if you don’t mind playing there, but I think it’s worth the tenner they’re asking for on Switch.

Green Hell ($24.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Following in the footsteps of The Long Dark‘s idea of surviving in the frigid northern areas of Canada, Green Hell has you trying to stay alive in the Amazon jungle. A very different setting with very different concerns, but surprisingly similar strategies in places. Also like The Long Dark, there’s an interesting narrative element to Green Hell. How did you get here? What is the truth behind your character’s motivations? Can you trust anyone? Can you trust yourself? Stay alive long enough and you just might find out. This is a pretty cool open world survival game, even if it doesn’t exactly break the mold for the genre. From a technical point of view there are better places to play this, but there’s something appealing about hunkering down with a portable survival game.

FIFA 21 Nintendo Switch Legacy Edition ($49.99)

Well, it’s another Legacy Edition this year. That means you get updated kits, clubs, and squads, some new stadiums, and updated interface, and the exact same gameplay from last year, which was the exact same gameplay from the year before. The same modes, too. That may or may not be worth fifty dollars to you, but if you’re in the market for FIFA on your Switch it’s not like you have any choice. I mean, hey, it’s still a great soccer game. Just disappointing that EA does this kind of thing.

The Survivalists ($24.99)

A spin-off of the wildly successful The Escapists series, The Survivalists sees you washed up on the shore of an uncharted desert isle. Thankfully, you don’t have to deal with an annoying first mate who messes everything up. You will, however, have to deal with monkeys. Lots of monkeys. You see, there’s a lot of work to be done on the island: gathering, crafting, and so on. By befriending the local monkeys, you can teach them to do various tasks to help you out. Yes, you can become lord of the monkeys. There’s a lot to do here between exploring, crafting, and battling. Pretty enjoyable as these kinds of things go, in spite of some issues with the interface. Those issues are not so big in the mobile version, which also happens to be available to anyone with an Apple Arcade subscription. I’d recommend playing it there instead of here if you can.

Reflection of Mine ($7.99)

This is a top-down puzzle game whose chief mechanic involves controlling multiple characters at the same time, trying to get them to their respective exits without making one of them step on or into something dangerous in the process. The narrative set-up involves a girl who supposedly has dissociative identity disorder, but the story isn’t very prominent and the game’s understanding of the disorder in question is very pop-psych at best. Decent puzzles and an uncommon enough mechanic, but the overall theme just didn’t pull me in the way I’d hoped. Not bad, though.

Road 3 Pack ($7.99)

Here’s a bundle that definitely saves you some money on buying all three games individually, should you actually want and need all three games. It includes Rally Road, Twister Road, and Switchy Road. They normally go for a fiver apiece, so you’re essentially getting them for a little over half price by buying this bundle. To be frank, all three of these games are of the sort that you can find by the dozen for free on the App Store, but I suppose they’re popular concepts for a reason. While I suspect it’s less of a problem with this bundle than the Digerati ones, do make sure to check the prices for the individual games before buying this bundle in case they happen to be on sale at the time.

Ben 10: Power Trip ($39.99)

You know, when I was a kid I would have killed to have had my favorite TV shows, comics, and movies turned into big open world sandbox games. So even if Ben 10: Power Trip isn’t exactly Breath of the Wild over here, I’m sure fans of the character are going to be very happy to run around and flex the powers of their favorite transforming hero in a big, open environment. There’s also a co-op mode here that allows a second player to join in locally. I have no idea how good or bad this is, but I’m hardly the target audience for it. At the very least I can appreciate the ambition of it, and as a Spider-Man fan I know that I’m willing to put up with all kinds of flaws to enjoy an adventure with my hero of choice. I imagine there are some Ben 10 fans out there who feel the same way, and to them I say: enjoy!

Juiced! ($4.99)

The title of this game reminds me of a racing game on the PlayStation 2 that was published by Acclaim or THQ or someone like that back in the day. It was a thoroughly unremarkable racing game, though it did manage to have a somewhat controversial commercial. This Juiced! may not be appearing in any “too hot for TV" sizzle reels anytime soon, but it’s a much better game. It’s a 2D platformer with nice, big levels full of fun obstacles and enemies to overcome. There are unlockable challenges and outfits, lots of weapons and power-ups, and plenty of secrets to find. Nothing that will knock your socks off or anything, but it’s a solid little platformer for a fair price.

Inside Grass: A Little Adventure ($4.99)

Originally released on mobile a while back, Inside Grass is an adventure game with some RPG and puzzle elements. You play as some kids who have been shrunk down to insect size and go on an adventure in various locations. There are some mini-games here and there but the bulk of your experience is spent exploring, picking up items, and trying to find how to move on. I’m not really a fan of it at all, but if nothing else it is reasonably priced. It’s a cute idea, but a bit too scatter-shot in its mechanics and rough around the edges.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Yeesh, that’s quite a list. If I had to pick a few highlights, I’d point at Yooka-Laylee & the Impossible Lair, Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!!, and Deathtrap Dungeon Trilogy, but there are plenty of good games in there for most tastes. Not a whole lot in the weekend outbox, but you may as well check it while you’re looking anyway.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. Lots of games to play in this first full week of October, but which ones are you playing? I’ve actually been playing through an older release called Aggelos, and it’s excellent. Highly recommended to fans of Monster Land/World. Next week is going to be another busy one, friends. We can look forward to games like Prinny, Robotics;Notes Elite, Remothered: Broken Porcelain, Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?!, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge Director’s Cut, and many more. Minecraft Steve and friends will also be hitting Super Smash Bros. Ultimate next week. Whatever you’re playing, I hope you have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
