SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘SEGA AGES Herzog Zwei’, ‘Jet Set Knights’, and Today’s New Releases, Sales Featuring Square Enix and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 25th, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got summaries of the rest of the week’s releases, including the surprise Western launch of the final Switch SEGA AGES title. Beyond that, there is a huge list of new sales to dig into featuring games from Square Enix, Capcom, THQ Nordic, and more. Myriad ways to lose your coins today, friends. Let’s have look at all of them!

New Releases

SEGA AGES Herzog Zwei ($7.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

You may or may not remember Herzog Zwei, but its place in gaming history is significant. This is one of the foundations of the real-time strategy game as we know it, and SEGA has given it the treatment it deserves with this release. It has a brand-new training mode to teach you how to play and offers support for online multiplayer alongside the usual SEGA AGES improvements and features. For those who haven’t played it, imagine an RTS with a hero unit that takes the form of a transforming robot/jet. Yeah. This game is still really awesome, so make sure you check it out. Regrettably, this appears to be the finale of the SEGA AGES line on Switch, but what a way to go out!

Jet Set Knights ($9.99)

The princess is in danger and you have to step into the iron boots of one of four knights to protect her. The enemies will close in on her and you need to keep them from reaching her. You can lay down defenses to stop them or attack them directly, and defeating foes will earn you experience points and resources that can be used for upgrades. It’s a cross between classic single-screen arcade games and tower defense with a little dash of RPG elements on the top. Up to four players can work together via local multiplayer, or you can try to go it alone. It’s alright.

Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia ($39.99)

Another Netflix property has gotten a video game, but this time the development chores were handled by Wayforward. Does that mean this is a great game? Well, it’s no guarantee, but at the very least it’s probably not a poor one. It’s a side-scrolling platformer for up to two players locally where you control Jim Lake Jr. and Claire as they chase down evil and try to stop the Time-pocalypse before it’s too late. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if you’re into this IP and its characters, you’ll probably get what you want out of this game. If not, there are lots of great side-scrollers out there on the eShop that don’t cost forty bucks.

Cooking Tycoons 2 – 3 in 1 Bundle ($12.99)

Baltoro’s bundled up a few more of its cooking games for a discounted price for those who can’t get enough of this type of thing. In this pack you get Food Truck Tycoon – Asian Cuisine, Breakfast Bar Tycoon, and Sushi Time. You also get the expansion packs for Breakfast Bar Tycoon and Food Truck Tycoon – Asian Cuisine. Three different flavors of the same basic gameplay, but these kinds of games are popular for a reason. As always, be careful to check and see that the included games aren’t already on sale for a cheaper price before buying in on this bundle. It’s less likely here than it is with Digerati’s bundles, but it could still happen.

Car Driving School Simulator ($13.99)

Yeah, it’s another one of BoomBit’s driving games. This one using the idea of a driving school as its core premise, tasking you with following traffic rules and so forth in order to complete missions. There are 30 different vehicles, 8 different locations set around the world, and a free roaming mode for when you just want to drive around without worrying about buckling your seatbelt or whatever. As with most of this publisher’s other games, you can find a free-to-play version of this on the App Store if you want to give it a try first. It’s packed full of monetization stuff that isn’t in the Switch version, but it works as a demo of sorts.

Animals for Toddlers ($6.99)

Well, not much I can say about this one, really. It’s an app aimed at very young kids that can only be played in handheld mode. There are six different locations: the farm, the desert, the jungle, the ocean, Australia, and Antarctica. Each location has a handful of animals in it, and you can touch the animals to interact with them and hear them make sounds. Apparently there are some secrets to be found, perhaps by tapping on different places on the screen. Perhaps worth considering if you’ve got a very little one and are okay with putting your Switch in their grubby little paws.

Air Missions: HIND ($24.99)

Although this game calls itself a simulator, I wouldn’t expect much in the way of realism from this experience. It’s mostly a bothersome action shooter where you’re trying to line up your attacks while your unstable craft wobbles just enough to throw you off. There are fifteen missions set across four different environments, a few different control options, and a handful of modes that allow you to play with or against other players online. Reviews were middling on other platforms, and I don’t see any reason to think this Switch version will get a warmer reception.

Assault ChaingunS KM ($9.99)

This is a lightgun shooter minus the lightgun, more or less. You can shoot by touching the screen or aim using the gyro sensor on your controller, depending on what mode you’re playing in. There are six stages to play, each one set in a different part of the city. Once you’ve cleared them, there’s not much more to do than replay them for a better score. The game does have support for local multiplayer for up to four players, so that’s something I suppose. All in all this seems like a fairly, um, budget experience, but there aren’t a whole lot of games like this coming out these days so maybe some people can tolerate that.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Tokyo Game Show’s online show kicked off yesterday, and I suspect that’s part of the reason behind some of today’s sales. A lot of Square Enix games are on sale, and so are several Capcom titles. Likely unrelated, but THQ Nordic is also having a sale on some of its games. I also want to highlight Bulletstorm and Duke Nukem 3D, with the former being at its lowest price yet. There are other treasures in there, but I’ll leave it to you to sift through and find what catches your fancy. By comparison, the weekend outbox is rather small. Do check it anyway, as there are a few good games in there you may want to grab.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. Next week we’ll be taking our first steps into October, if you can believe it. I don’t know about you, but this has simultaneously been the longest and shortest year of my life. There are lots of interesting games on next week’s schedule, but the ones that have caught my eye the most are Super Mario Bros. 35, Ys Origin, and Alwa’s Legacy. For this weekend, I’ll be splitting my time between Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Hades, though. I’d imagine many of you will be doing the same, but do let me know in the comments if you’re playing anything very interesting. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
