SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Samurai Shodown NEOGEO Collection’ Release Date Revealed, Today’s New Releases, the Latest Sales, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 27th, 2020. Today is the calm before the storm, friends. The next two days have so many games hitting that even a rich person’s wallet might weep. For today, we’ve just got a humble pair of new releases to check out. There’s also a bit of news, and a whole lot of junk on sale with a bit of decent stuff on the side. Let’s get down to business!

News

‘Samurai Shodown NEOGEO Collection’ Arrives on July 28th

Okay look, the new Samurai Shodown game is great and all, but as a retro enthusiast it was the other Samurai Shodown news we got around the same time that had my interest. Samurai Shodown NEOGEO Collection was announced to be under development by the good folks at Digital Eclipse, and I waited anxiously for its release. That wait will soon be over as the game is set to arrive digitally on July 28th with a physical release coming later in the summer. The collection includes the first five Samurai Shodown games, Samurai Shodown V Special, and the heretofore unreleased final NEOGEO game Samurai Showdown V Perfect. As with other collections from this developer, there’s an extensive set of extra features including a museum and music player. It also includes online play with… gasp… rollback netcode. The price has been set at $39.99, which is pretty reasonable when you compare it to the cost of buying comparatively bare-bones ACA NEOGEO versions of the games.

This Week’s ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event is ‘Zelda’-Themed

Has a week blown by that quickly? I guess so, because it’s time for another Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event announcement. This weekend’s event is going to be a tournament, and the theme this time around is The Legend of Zelda. Stages and characters from the series will be featured, and you can get some spirits by participating. The event kicks off on Friday and runs for the usual three days. Good luck!

New Releases

Missile Command: Recharged ($2.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Readers of this site will probably know this game from its mobile version. This is basically that game but with the Infinite Charge IAP already included. It’s an interesting modernized take on one of Atari’s finest classics, and while it’s not the deepest pond in the valley I think you’ll get at least three dollars of fun out of it. Defend your cities and cannons from incoming nukes and try to last as long as you can. Shoot down power-ups for a little bit of help now and then and spend the points you earn on improving various stats. I think this works a little better on mobile than it does on the Switch, but I won’t call you silly if you want to buy it here.

Ailment ($7.99)

The title of this game itched my brain a little, and a quick search showed me that this was originally a free-to-play mobile game. Not a bad one, mind you, but as always I can’t help but worry about the balancing in this paid up-front version of the game. The mobile game kind of nudged you towards buying consumable IAP currency, and if the balancing hasn’t been carefully adjusted here I can’t see things going well. Anyway, the nice thing is that you can check this out for free on your mobile device to see how well you like it before spending any money here. It’s a top-down shooter. I’m not sure if you need another one of those, but it is what it is.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

As mentioned above, there are a whole lot of games of dubious value in today’s sales. But there is some good stuff in here too. Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection is on sale for the first time, with the rest of the Mega Man games tossed in there for good measure. Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is on sale, and so are its DLC packs. You can basically buy the game and all of its released content to date for about thirty bucks, which is a pretty good deal. The outbox has some decent things in it, so make sure to have a look through before those discounts expire.

That’s all for today, friends. Tomorrow is going to be a wild one, perhaps topped only by what’s coming on Friday. Unfortunately for me, I’ll be here with summaries of each and every game hitting the eShop. Probably not too much other than that and the sales lists, but I hope you can understand that. Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
