SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Arrest of a Stone Buddha’ Release Date Announced, ‘Asphalt’ Celebrates 15th Anniversary, the Latest Sales, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 6th, 2020. There’s a big thunderstorm going on outside my office right now, but I’m assuming if you’re reading this that I did not get zapped by lightning or anything. In today’s article, we’ve got some news about upcoming releases and special events, along with a nice list of fresh sales to check out. Tomorrow will have more than a dozen new releases, but today doesn’t seem to have a whole lot going on in that regard. That’s how it is sometimes. Let’s dig into what we’ve got!

News

‘Arrest of a Stone Buddha’ Hits Switch on May 21st

One of the more interesting indie titles to hit the Switch last year was The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa, from publisher Circle Entertainment and developer yeo. It immersed you in the world of a Japanese hooligan who was finishing out his last year of high school, giving you a great deal of choice in how his day-to-day life played out. That same pairing returns with the upcoming Switch release of Arrest of a Stone Buddha, which sees you playing as a hitman in France in the 1970s. It promises yet another unique blend of story-telling, non-linear progression, and action gameplay. I slept a bit at first on Ringo, but I won’t be sleeping on this game when it hits the Switch eShop on May 21st for $14.99.

‘Asphalt 9: Legends’ Celebrates the 15th Anniversary of the Series

While some understandably chafe at the game’s free-to-play nature, Asphalt 9: Legends is a pretty enjoyable arcade racing experience on the Switch. As it turns out, the Asphalt series is now 15 years old! And a half! Neat. Yes, it was just over 15 years ago when Asphalt Urban GT made its debut on the Nokia N-Gage and Nintendo DS in the holiday of 2004, and Gameloft is in a party mood as a result. Launch the Switch version of Asphalt 9 between May 11th and May 31st and you’ll be treated to a free Dodge Challenger 392 Hemi Scat Pack with a special 15th Anniversary decal. Starting on May 14th, a special Anniversary event will be running where you can additionally earn a Nissan GTR Nismo.

Big, Bushy Eyebrows Feature in This Week’s ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event

Sometimes it’s easy to guess what the upcoming weekend event will be for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Holidays are a safe bet, and big Nintendo or third-party releases seem to result in a coordinated event as well. Other times, it’s a bit harder. This week doesn’t seem to have anything special going on, unless Nintendo wanted to do a Golden Week thing. So what do we get? An event centered around thick eyebrows. Yeah. This is a Spirit Board event, and spirits featuring big brows will be appearing more often. Defeat them to earn more SP than you usually would. I don’t know either, esteemed friends, but the event kicks off this Friday and runs through the weekend as always.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Is it time for another Ubisoft sale? I guess it is! Well, you all know the drill by now. Most of Ubisoft’s titles are discounted right now, though not all of them. Beyond that, some other cool games like Vambrace, Galaxy Champions TV, and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath are on sale as well. The outbox is quite big, but there’s nothing particularly striking in it beyond the Star Wars games finishing up their May the 4th discount periods. Have a look through the list anyway, just in case.

That’s all for today, friends. As I mentioned up above, tomorrow is a monster of a release day. There are somewhere near 15 new games hitting the eShop tomorrow, and we’ll have summaries of all of them. We’ll also round up whatever sales and major news hits, but you can expect the bulk of the article to stick to the new games. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
