Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 8th, 2020. In today’s article, we take a look at a handful of new releases that hit the eShop today. There’s also a bit of news to cover, including the usual update on the Smash Bros. weekend event. Finally, there are plenty of sales to take a look at, including some sweet discounts on Ubisoft titles. Let’s get to it!

‘Black Bird’ Wings Its Way to Limited Run Games, Orders Open April 10th

This dark Fantasy Zone-inspired shoot-em-up from the brilliant folks at Onion Games has a one-of-a-kind atmosphere and extremely fun gameplay. It came out on Switch a while back, but only as a digital download. If you want a Black Bird game you can keep on your shelf, here’s your chance. Limited Run Games will be making a standard physical edition of the game, along with a special limited edition that costs more money and includes more goodies. The orders open for this game on April 10th and will remain open for a full month. Just head on over to Limited Run’s website starting this Friday and you should have no issues getting your order in.

Trip Over Yourself to Get to the Latest ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event

It’s Wednesday, and that means it’s time to see what the weekend will have in store for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players. This time, it’s a tournament! And the theme? Everyone’s favorite Super Smash Bros. game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl! In this three-day tournament, you’re limited to characters and items from the controversial Wii installment of the game. Don’t worry, there isn’t any tripping. The event kicks off this Friday and will run through the weekend as usual.

New Releases

Towertale ($9.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

This is a 2D action game with a heavy emphasis on bosses, sort of a melee answer to something like Cuphead. Up to four players can join in on the fun, with multiple different characters to use depending on your preferred playstyle. It’s quite tough, but if cracking nuts is your kind of jazz, you’ll probably appreciate what you get here. Each character has their own story and ending, so if you want to see it all you’ll have to clear the game with each of them. It’s not much to look at, but the gameplay mechanics are solid enough. Give it a shot if you’re seeking a challenge.

Ubongo ($13.99)

There are two ways you can look at this Switch version of Ubongo. First, you could see it as a cheaper option than buying the board game. That is definitely true. Second, you could see it as a somewhat expensive puzzler that really shines brightest in multiplayer but lacks online play. Up to you, really. Basically, this is a game where you advance on the board by being the first to complete a polymino puzzle. It’s a clever design that makes for a slightly different sort of a appeal than many board games, but I personally find that it burns out fast. The developers have included substantial solo content in here, which is appreciated even if it’s not the best way to play.

Galaxy of Pen and Paper +1 Edition ($12.49)

If you liked the Knights of Pen and Paper games, here’s the sci-fi spin-off. And while I call it a spin-off, it’s really more like a straight sequel with a new lick of paint and a few added features. If you liked those games, you’ll like this one. If you didn’t, nothing here will convince you otherwise. It’s still crammed with tons of jokes, plenty of battles, and some kind of story to glue it all together. This is of course content-identical to the mobile version, which sells for a quarter of the price. It’s up to you whether having buttons and a potentially a bigger screen is worth the extra nine-and-change.

Convoy: A Tactical Roguelike ($14.99)

Take FTL and give it a Mad Max paintjob and you’ve more or less got the target of Convoy. Does it hit that target? Eh, not really, but it’s close enough to entertain. The idea here is that you have to make an emergency landing on a strange planet. You need parts, so you send out a convoy to search for them. This world is a very hostile one, unfortunately, so you need to try to fend off attacks and deal with all kinds of nonsense. The combat system is pretty neat, but apart from that Convoy ends up shaking out as a less-engaging FTL and not much more. Again, not bad, and if you love FTL you’ll get some kicks here.

Pen and Paper Games Bundle ($29.99)

This is a new bundle that contains all three of the Pen and Paper RPGs. That means you get Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier, Knights of Pen and Paper 2 Deluxiest, and Galaxy of Pen and Paper +1, all for one discounted price. If you want these games, this is definitely a good value. Unfortunately, it leaves out Behold’s other excellent game, Chroma Squad, so you’ll still have one game to buy if you want to complete your set. Make a bundle that boots the tepid Knights of Pen and Paper 2 and replaces it with Chroma Squad and I am there, friends.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

The big news in sales today is that Ubisoft is running a special Easter sale. Pretty much all of its Switch titles are at their lowest prices, though admittedly not any lower than the last sale for most of them. But hey, who cares? Ubisoft’s Switch line-up has a lot of great games in it, and it’s hard to go wrong with most of them. Besides the Ubisoft sale, there isn’t too much going on, but if you like shoot-em-ups and don’t have Hyper Sentinel yet, it’s certainly worth fifteen cents. In the outbox, Circle Entertainment/Fly High is finishing up a bunch of its sales, as are Digerati, Abylight, and a few others. Grab what you need!

That’s all for today, friends. Yes, I said there would probably be a review today. Unfortunately, my TurboGrafx-16 Mini arrived in the mail today and somehow I lost a few hours. Well, there’s always another day. Tomorrow will have a bunch of new releases to check out, though rather fewer than usual. We’ll check them all out regardless. I hope you all have a decent Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
