Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. We’ve got a nice group of games in this week’s feature, including an appearance from a title from one of my favorite mobile developers! Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!
Dr. Mario World, Free Dr. Mario World hasn’t exactly had a rocket start in the market the way a few other Nintendo apps have, but such is the nature of the free-to-play puzzle game, I suppose. At any rate, the game has added some new content inspired by the classic Super Mario Galaxy. There’s a new Super Mario Galaxy-style world, and two new doctors to unlock: Dr. Rosalina and Dr. Luma. It’s a cute idea for an update, and I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot more of these in the future. Could we see Dr. Link one day? I hope so.
Clash Royale, Free Party button! Party button! Push the button and it’s party time! Wooooo! Hunh? I’ve just been informed that the new party button in Clash Royale does not, in fact, spawn a party complete with cake and chips at your location. Oh well. I guess you hit the button and you can play some new game modes by yourself or with other players. You can earn lots of cool rewards by doing this, and cool rewards are good things for most people. Not going to lie: still bummed the party button does not raise the roof.
Toy Blast, Free Wait, does Dr. Mario World count as my obligatory free-to-play puzzle game update for the week? Oh well, it’s too late now. As canon has established, my delete key doesn’t work. Anyway, Toy Blast has 50 new levels as usual. The tacked-on narrative explanation for these new levels has something to do with steam-powered scientific inventions. That’s really it. Not even any attempt to glue it all together. Nothing about the toys. Just take your levels and get out of my restaurant.
Fortnite, Free It’s time for the next crossover in Fortnite. We’ve seen Thanos and Claptrap, but are you ready for the Dark Knight? Yes, that’s right. The guy whose nemesis is ripping up the box office right now. He hasn’t been in any movies in a while, but I’m sure you all remember him. Get the Caped Crusader Pack and you’ll get the Batman Comic Book Outfit, the Dark Knight Movie Outfit, the Batman Pickaxe (a classic Batman tool), and the Batwing Glider. Dive into the Gotham City Rift Zone and earn some rewards in the Welcome to Gotham City Challenge Pack.
Township, Free The latest update for Township more or less plants the seeds for the next few events and not much else. The first is a Sport Fishing event that kicks off on October 10th, followed by the Halloween event, Trick-or-Trade, that starts on October 24th. The Ancient Legends season gets going with the Enchanting Oasis event that begins on November 5th. There are also apparently a few new limited-time offers, and one new townsperson named Richard. You carry a lot of hopes on your shoulders, Richard. Best of luck.
Disney Heroes: Battle Mode, Free What. What. I… what? Okay, three new additions to the Disney Heroes roster, and they’re all pretty odd picks. Yzma slides in from The Emperor’s New Groove, while Madam Mim from The Sword in the Stone, of all possible characters, comes to the game. But wait, I saved the biggest surprise for last: Gonzo from The Muppets! GONZO. You can have Gonzo on your team with Kevin Flynn from Tron and Darkwing Duck, and if that’s not what big stupid cross-over games are all about, I don’t know what else you could want.
Pokémon Masters EX, Free So much hype on this one, but it feels like it’s fading fast already. I’m sure DeNA and the Pokemon Company still have plenty of gas in the update tank, though. This one is more of a maintenance update than anything else. Battle areas now show a recommended strength score, and you can check stat changes for each of your sync pairs as you’re equipping them with gear. You can now exchange multiple items at once, cutting down on annoying busy work, and some of the UI has been adjusted. Throw in some bug fixes and performance improvements and that’s the ball game.
Marvel Contest of Champions, Free Are we done with 80th anniversary stuff now? Maybe, I think? Because we’re moving on to a new thing called Future Prometheus, which largely involves Guillotine and Morningstar trying to clear Morningstar’s name before Elsa Bloodstone and her team can do that slaying thing they do. A bunch of characters have had some adjustments made, presumably for balance purposes, and a handful of bugs have been fixed.
Diner DASH Adventures, Free And here’s a game I don’t usually feature, but I’m peeking around for early Halloween updates and this is definitely one of them. Diner Dash Adventures has started its Halloween event, bringing new costumes for the characters, limited-time decorations, and Halloween-inspired food. There are some new Game of Thorns quests that tell a bit about Grandma’s past. Solve her riddle and uncover some treasure. That sounds like a thing people do in diners all the time!
Heroes of Steel RPG Elite, $3.99 Trese Brothers update! And it’s quite a beefy one, friends. The final Episode 4 expansion pack Siege the Sur-Relliar Glacier is now available, giving the end-game conclusion to the story of the four Harbingers. You’ll fight through seven new dungeons and maps, fight multiple major bosses, face more than fifteen new monster types, and find more than 100 new pieces of gear. There’s more here, but that’s the gist of it. And that’s certainly good enough for a coveted UMMSotW award!
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
