SwitchArcade Round-Up: Upcoming NES ‘Switch Online’ Releases, ‘OTTTD’ Releases Out of Nowhere, ‘Cosmic Star Heroine’ and ‘Saturday Morning RPG’ on Sale, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 6th, 2019. It’s an unusually quiet Monday today, probably owing to the Japanese side of things still being on holiday for Golden Week. Nevertheless, we’ve got a little news, a new release, and a bunch of sales to check out today. That’s the Switch for you: even when it’s quiet, there’s never nothing going on. Let’s go ahead and have a look at what today is all about!

News

‘Donkey Kong Jr.’, ‘Clu Clu Land’, ‘Vs. Excitebike’ to Join Nintendo Switch Online

While Nintendo hasn’t made the official announcement as of this writing, the main site for the Nintendo Switch Online service has listed three upcoming games for the service. Presumably, these will be the May titles for the app, but all we can say for sure is that they are coming at some point. The games are Donkey Kong Jr., Clu Clu Land, and Vs. Excitebike. Donkey Kong Jr. is of course the follow-up to Nintendo’s hit Donkey Kong. You’ve probably played it. Clu Clu Land is a puzzle action game that seems slightly underwhelming at first but is actually pretty fun when you figure out how it works. Rather confusingly, Vs. Excitebike is not the same game that Hamster released on Switch a while back. Instead, it’s a previously Japan-only release that came out on the Famicom Disk System. It has a few interesting differences from the usual Excitebike, so I guess that’s cool. Following the usual pattern, these will probably arrive next week as an update to the app.

The Next Limited Run Games Physical Release is ‘Aegis Defenders’

Aegis Defenders is an interesting combination of tower defense and platforming that is reasonably well-regarded if not overwhelmingly so. The Switch version released a little over a year ago digitally, and it’s the latest game selected by Limited Run Games for a physical release. Orders will open this Friday, May 10th, and like all of the Switch releases from Limited Run Games, you’ll have two weeks to get your order in. Coincidentally, May 10th is also when the order period for Lumines Remastered ends. So if you wanted a physical version of that game and you don’t have your order in yet, head on over to the website for Limited Run Games and do that little thing.

New Releases

OTTTD: Over The Top Tower Defense ($7.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Well, this was largely unexpected. SMG Studio isn’t entirely new to the Switch; Death Squared was made available through publisher Circle Entertainment in the system’s early days. But this is the first game they’re self-publishing on the system, and it just sort of dropped out of thin air today. Ignoring the fact that the eShop screenshots have marketing text slapped all over them, OTTTD is actually quite a good tower defense game. This probably isn’t news for mobile gaming fans, mind you. The Switch version is priced a little higher, but it also doesn’t have any in-app purchases, so I think it balances out. Anyway, if you’re looking for a fun tower defense game on your Switch, this is definitely that.

Sales

Some nifty stuff went on sale over the weekend, even if none of it is super high-profile. A pair of highly enjoyable indie RPGs can be grabbed for a nice price as Cosmic Star Heroine and Saturday Morning RPG get sweet 50% discounts. I’ll also nudge you in the direction of Black Paradox and forma.8. As for the outbox, most of the Golden Week sales are expiring soon. That means Katamari Damacy and the whole NISA line-up including the Disgaea games and Ys VIII will be returning to their usual prices, and they’re not likely to be on sale again for at least a few months. So, you know, grab what you want while you can.

Make sure to check back tomorrow as I look at a couple of big new releases and perhaps even review a game or two. We’ll also have the latest news and sales, of course, because that’s our bread and butter around these parts. As always, thanks for reading!
